And...the 5x zoom is not a periscope. It is a fixed focal-length 5x folded prism lens. So the years of hype about finally having an optical zoom were false. It seems the 1X-4.9X zoom range will still mostly be crops of the main lens/sensor rather than a pure optical zoom from what should have been a periscope system.

I'll go out on a limb and say they couldn't get a periscope system working for this year and simply stuffed a prism lens in the same space. Next year we'll see a dramatic new invention - the periscope lens!

EDIT: A couple folks have pointed out the S23 Ultra uses a similar cropping system rather than a variable optical zoom. Apologies!
Uhm, this is probably the best implementation of a periscope (yes it's a periscope) yet, it will probably be other way around in the coming years with other smartphone brands switching to this system.

  • Sensor isn't perpendicular but flat which means sensor size isn't held back by the thickness of the phone -- iPhone 15 Pro Max has the largest periscope sensor on any smartphone.
  • Allows for a wider aperture so better low-light performance. -- iPhone 15 Pro Max has the widest aperture on their periscope out of all smartphones by a huge margin.
  • Allows for better stabilization -- iPhone 15 Pro Max probably has the best stabilization on their periscope out of all smartphones.
  • Wastes less space.

I can't wait to see comparisons!
They can have 24/28/35 mm focal length for the main camera because they will all output 24 mp, with no loss in resolution. Other fixed cameras like the Ricoh GR and Fujifilm X100 also have crop modes to simulate other focal ranges but they do a straight crop and lose resolution, unlike Apple's computational approach.

My understanding is that the Xperia 1 V has an actual optical zoom. A family member bought this beast and I played a little bit with it - it's lovely btw - but my feeling after taking a few shots, was that Samsung, Apple and especially Google just have better image processing for point-and-click.

But I have to say, microSD, headphone jack, IP58 and IP68 ratings, really cool materials (hard to explain, you have to hold it, it's very cool). Lovely device with probably top optics.

Stop believing all the rumors.

The rumors were just mostly wrong as you pointed out, but let's look at the many new things that weren't rumored:
  • The new Portrait photo system that automatically shoots portraits for people, cats, and dogs
  • Portraits now using the Photonic Engine for much better detail
  • Portraits can now be re-focused after the fact (!)
  • Several focal lengths for 1x lens, and ability to choose your default
  • Now shoot in 24MP or 48MP HEIF!
  • Sounds like camera will produce 24MP at minimum, instead of 12MP
  • Shoot 3D videos on Pro / Pro Max to view on Vision Pro! (This is a huge surprise; I might have upgraded just for this alone, since I want an AVP and its 3D videos blew everyone away who tried it)
  • A17 hardware ray-tracing (arguably was rumored, but awesome)
Not to mention the useful Action button, Thunderbolt, lighter titanium enclosure, and so on.

15 pro max 5x telephoto is much better than Samsung s23 Ultra 10x telephoto

1/3.2 sensor 1.12 pixel size 15.5 mm2 f2.8

Samsung s23 Ultra 10x telephoto

1/3.52 sensor 1.12 pixel size 12.1 mm2 f4.9

1.375 more stops of light with a larger sensor and aperture.
Fantastic. The shots in the keynote looked great. Will be interesting to see how it does at 20-25x, especially with new Smart HDR 5 and the upgraded Photonic engine.

A bit underwhelming. iPhone 15 Pro max is now $100 more than iPhone 14 Pro max for basically not much improvement. Just a bit more memory. Bye Apple. See you next year.
More stock available for the rest of us 😁

Many of these camera features also on standard 15. I couldn’t care less what iPhone is made of we had plastic ones at one point. There’s not much to upgrade to the pro for. 99% of the features won’t be used by average user.

So inferior photo processing, an old card slot, and an outmoded headphones port. That's a great sales pitch 😂

Then don't get the Pro of course, you should be happy to be saving money and still getting all those features. Me, I'm pumped for the Pro.

Haha that's not how I see it.

Card slot = very cheap 1Tb removable extra storage. I think no matter how you use your phone, this is damn cool.

Headphones port = no dongles. I have an Onyx THX, my wife uses a Google dongle. I don't know how good their amp is, but if it's any good, that's an advantage to me.

Honestly, if I weren't buying a 15 Pro, I'd seriously look at the Sony, I liked it a lot.

That CPU is faster in single core than most desktop workstations and the GPU is faster than a PS4 and has hardware raytracing. The performance is already beyond ridiculous, what do you need faster stuff for?
Don’t get lured by apple’s marketing comparisons, they mean absolutely nothing. In fact the best indication of the performance is given by what apple doesn’t communicate on.
The immense majority of workstation CPUs have very limited performance because companies buying in bulk do not need any extensive performance to run excel and outlook.
The GPU being faster than the PS4, I admit I didn’t hear that. Now note that ray tracing was demoed at only 30fps. People usually play games at 60fps so this might be of limited use.

For sure a great cpu, but short of expectations regarding the new 3 nm technology.

99% of normal users will never once need this neural improvement, i bet if you ask 100 people to name one app that uses it, no one would be able to give even one example of an app that benefits from the neural engine

Most people don't even know what a GPU is, that doesn't mean they don't have utility. Half of them still think a CPU is "the tower connected to the screen at work".

Do we know what modem is in these phones and if there is any difference in the pros vs regular Iphones ?

I bought one as a second device. Sometimes pictures taken with my my 12PM looks better but Xperia photos are more close to the reality. As a point and shoot device, iPhone, Samsung and Pixel does much better job. I had a Pixel 7 pro and that took excellent photos at night. Sony’s camera app has almost same UI as their popular mirrorless but sometimes I felt like taking photos with my Nikon DSLR is easier than Xperia 1V.

idk about ya’ll people but iPhone pro 15/15 pro max is a huge improvement with its features and specs over my iPhone 11.

I’m definitely getting the 15 pro and can’t wait to switch from iPhone 11. And if nexts year pro version is better, we shall see maybe it will have the features that was missing this year.

I am so bummed. I was so excited for the 15 Pro and now having just done the compare feature on the Apple site, the pro is almost exactly the same as the 15. The only significant difference being the camera, which for me coming from the SE3 the regular iPhone 15 camera is probably wayyyy better. And mayyyyybe the A17 processor?

Question is, coming from the SE3 would I be happy with the regular 15 or do I need to bite the bullet and get the Pro?
