Here is the thing though: Very few of you commenting actually watch Amazon Prime Video anyway (because it’s terrible). So ads or no ads… you won’t notice. 😂
😂 This is true.

To be honest though, I only pay for fast shipping and Prime Video. I have not used any other “benefit” that prime offers in all the years I’ve paid for it.

For me, the good thing about commercials, don't binge shows, because halfway through the first one I turn it off and go do something else.

I agree the Prime delivery times have gotten so ridiculous that I'm not ordering from Amazon as much. It sucks putting a project on hold waiting for a piece from Amazon even though I've been to the hardware store twice where I could of bought it days and some literally weeks before it gets delivered or informed lost in shipping

And just like that, I’m cancelling my prime subscription come January. The shipping speed has been slowing down enormously over the past couple of years but I’ve enjoyed the shows so I kept the subscription. Between this extra $40 every year and them adding delivery fees for Amazon fresh I’m done.

Bit of a daft comment. THere's plenty on there to watch with some good original shows. There's also a lot of UK specific content available in the UK market, so it's nonsense to suggest it's terrible.

I just see it as a perk of my Prime subscription though, so I feel I get my monies worth.

So, cord-cutting got us to ditch cable for many different subscription services controlled by a few companies that readily increase their fees. And now we're getting ads back because they can't seem to make any money promoting average-quality shows to a fickle audience that can easily ditch those services at a whim.

Somebody, please convince me how this is progress.

All I ask is that they please, please, PLEASE vary up the ads. We use the ad-laden version of Hulu pretty often and it's the same nasty HIMS commercials over and over again. Sure, we could pay for the no ad-tier, but for the past several years we always renewed with their Black Friday deal. $2 a month beats $14 a month, no matter how hard you try to convince me otherwise.

Quality of products also way down with Amazon. So much Chinese **** being rammed down our throats.

Amazon used to be great. Now its just *********. Prime Video has always been average.
Now, I agree with you that there is a lot of bad quality stuff on Amazon, but how is this being rammed down our throats?

Surely we are (at least I know I am) still in control of clicking the buy button.

I just renewed my Prime membership. I should have ad free until my next renewal. They just keep taking away and raising the price. Remember when prime members use to get two day shipping. Now I have items that take a week or more to arrive.

Honestly. there's so little good stuff on Amazon Prime and it's so hard to find with the awful UI anyway that it'll just be easier to pirate shows I want to watch rather then have to battle with ads on top. Amazon gets more than enough money from me for Prime, Business Prime and an average of about 2 orders a day. If that's not enough for them then so be it.

Prime also has bad quality streaming, in my opinion.
I remember I started watching Mr Robot with my paid subscription, but ended up finishing the series on """other platforms""" because the quality was 100 times better.

Anyway the prime thing has always been an extra, and I pretty much only watched the grand tour specials.
For me the main appeal was the free shipping and extra services.

Prime Video will soon feature "limited advertisements" starting on January 29, 2024. The company assured users that Prime Video will have "meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers."
I’m going to say this is absolute lie. There will be more ads and interruption than linear tv in long run to encourage users to sign up for ad free option.

I’m guessing some lawyer with Prime account will soon start class action lawsuit, frivolous or not.

Ad free makes Apple TV+ more and more appealing considering it’s very low price of $9.99 per month. (Although you will need Apple device for the best experience and very tight integration with iOS and tvOS)

I'm fed up getting nickel-and-dimed for software and needing 5 or so streaming services to be able to watch everything.
It's cable all over again.

You're probably right. YouTube is nigh-unwatchable with ads and it seems to be the same few over and over.

I wouldn't call it terrible, would I pay for JUST it, no. But there are some really good originals.

  • Good Omens
  • Reacher (haven't watched myself but I know it got great reviews)
  • The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • Upload (well the first season the 2nd was good and the 3rd was meh)
  • The Boys
  • Jack Ryan (My Dad really liked it but he passed earlier this year, I haven't watched).

Plus they have a decent rotation of other shows and movies in their library.

However having to watch ads diminishes all of that too.

I would have just increased the price and kept it ad-free.
It would have been much more elegant.
In the end the result is the same, but this way it looks greedier.

Every other service has increased its cost, so it wcould have been motivated with inflation.
Except that they keep increasing the cost constantly. It was great deal when $99 a year, then $119 (ok not too bad only 20 a year more) then $129, then $139 now another $38. Then the "included" prime music is additional $8 if you want any current music. I guess this was a way to say they are not increasing cost again so we get a warm fuzzy feeling about paying for Prime again this year that we came out good with no increase.
