Not really. Intel can pull a bunch of top-bin chips that they've been hiding and knock AMD back into the dumpster.

Really, if all you can say is "9% faster" you're screwed when Intel comes up with "12% faster" than your "9% faster".

If Intel releases 7th generation extreme chips with higher core counts - Zen is dead except for the low-lifes who chant "fastest $299 processor".
Intel still needs more pci-e unless they overclock the DMI link

More for what? As far as I know this is the biggest advantage Intel has over Ryzen platform, apart from 6 channel memory(for those who need it). 32 vs 44 PCIe 3.0 lanes is quite the difference ;).

Edit: First films are starting to roll out.

Looking at the TDP of the top end Ryzen - it's 95W.

The current skylake top of the 6700k in the iMac is 91W.

If Apple puts a cinebench murdering AMD CPU in an iMac, I would really, really consider it. All they have to do is keep that price from creeping up past what is is now (for me). We know Ryzen processors are remarkably affordable, so I hope if Apple moves to AMD, we don't see an Apple tax on BTO iMacs with the 8 core chips. I better not see the 1800x as a $800 upgrade when configuring a new Mac.

Apple won´t go with AMD... They will go on with Intel.... There is no rumor or anything, that Apple will change their CPUs in the Future.... After the 2016 Macbook Pro, Apple will release the Imac with Intel and TB3 and maybe maybe (I dont´t believe it) Apple will release a new MacPro with a XeonE5V4 DDR4 Ram and 6 TB3 Ports and USB3.1 Gen2....

If Apple would choose AMD, there would be some rumors about that... No Amd in the 2016 tb3 MBPro no Amd in future releases....

The chance is greater, that Apple would change the Mac Range to ARM Processors, than AMD

This is a site, which has already provided more leaks MONTHS before they were going to come to fruition, about Ryzen. They have very good sources in AMD.

Eh, I wouldn't rule it out. Macs (and especially the desktops) don't get the kind of rumor coverage they use to. Given AMD's upcoming APU lineup and their willingness to design custom chips, this seems like something well suited to what Apple wants.

thanks for the links, but i PERSONALLY don´t think, that Apple will change their range to AMD... It won´t happen...
You will see it, when Apple brings new Imacs... and maybe a new Dekstop...

Let me put this to you this way. Previous versions of macOS 10.12, those which had specific kext in the OS, for Polaris10XT2, and AMD Vega traces, also has already traces of... Raven Ridge.

What is Raven Ridge? It is codename for AMD NPUs both mobile and desktop. Apple in 10.12.4 removed Kext altogether, from the OS, and left support for only Polaris 11. People who had been able to get Polaris 10 work in MacOS were left behind, with no support for the GPUs.

What does it indicate you ask? It depends on what are we going to get. You may be right that this year there will not be transition of iMac to AMD. Rather just simple spec bump. But next year is 20th anniversary of iMac, and Apple usually makes redesign of their hardware to celebrate it. That is how it happened with MacBook Pro, that is what is rumored to happen with iPhone, and IMO this is what will happen with iMac.

Apple is already working on something related with AMD CPUs, thats why there was already support for Raven Ridge NPUs. So they can extend it to other hardware as well.

You are too optimistic... Lets see, what the future will bring....
Why do you think that I am optimistic? You cannot diversify "possibility based on clues, we already have" from "just an opinion, based on personal preference"?

To be fair, there have been a lot of drivers that have shown up in macOS that have never been used. I'm thinking the Hawaii and Fiji kexts. I don't doubt Apple is testing these things but it doesn't mean they will ever be used.

Whether or not Apple switches to AMD is still unclear. We still don't know how efficient Zen will be, which may be the determining factor in whether Apple adopts it or not.

The CPUs are power gated. They have programmed profiles that in stock setting should not exceed certain level of power consumption, under load, and without Load. If it is supposed to be 65W TDP CPU - it will be that.

You would think that Apple could put a low-cost high-performing CPU to use in quite a lot of their range.

I could see Ryzen being fantastic in a Mac Mini or iMac - particularly when you get models with integrated AMD GPUs.

It could also be great in a mid-range Mac Pro, but that would take a pretty big change of heart from Apple in terms of investing in a platform they have shown complete disinterest in. I think the best chance of this happening would be if Apple went 100% AMD on the desktop as part of some kind of 'grand deal' with AMD. Intel don't seem to be giving Apple special treatment any more (or Apple isn't taking advantage of it), so not that much to lose by switching.

Cinebench may be seen as a non-representative benchmark for some but SemiAccurate is confident that Ryzen’s performance will hold up across a wide range of benchmarks. This last bit may explain why Intel PR sent out a last-minute “call us before you write” email to most of the press, but not SemiAccurate, after hours last night. You could infer that they are suddenly really worried about something. In case we read that wrong, they should be.

R7 1700 system was drawing from the wall 115W of power, and 40W while idle.

So the CPU really is 65W TDP.

I could see Apple switching over in a few years if AMD keeps up the pace with development. But just over a single chip release? Nope.

To be honest, I'd rather know the max thermal envelope of these Ryzens before making a move.

I actually laughed my ass off, on this information about CPU OC tool from AMD.

Want to know what it is called?

Ryzen Master
