I noticed the price of RX580 is down to about $300 on Amazon. (I paid $380 in May.) *sigh*. :)

Yeah, I paid just over $400 in April, and the exact model I purchased is now down to about $280. FML.

Well the other bad news for me is, if it gets even "cheaper", I'd be tempted to figure out how to add a second RX 580 in my Mac Pro 5,1.

Hey folks, are any of you able to confirm if FreeSync is working? If so is it implicit/natively controlled (as opposed to the Nvidia web driver which requires a manual toggle)?

*Edit: Question is for RX 580 owners, thx!*

FreeSync only available in Windows and Linux, not macOS.

Hello cMP enthusiasts,

I've done a fair amount of searching through these forums but have not been able to find an answer to a question I have regarding AMD GPUs.
I'm looking to swap the GPU so I can then upgrade my stock 5,1 rig to Mojave, firmware 140.0.0.0.0., as a prerequisite to a NVMe SSD upgrade.

Here's what I'm starting with:

Mac Pro (mid-2010) 5,1 // High Sierra 10.13.6
CPUs
: 2 x 2.4 quad-core Westmere
BootROM : MP51.0085.B00
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB
Storage: 1TB HDD

My question: Will I be able to run an AMD Radeon RX 590 GPU on this system?

The first posts at AMD Polaris & Vega GPU macOS Support (thx @MisterAndrew) and cMP {classicMacPro}{4,1 & 5,1} - Upgrade Guide Sticky Discussion (thx @n8ballz) have no mention of these units (as far as I can find).

I know that I'll have to upgrade BootRom to MP51.0089.B00 as a first step.
Edit: I suppose it would be wise to add a dedicated power supply to either RX 580 or RX 590.

Thanks in advance!

As @h9826790 has rightly pointed out, you’re better off sticking with the Apple recommended Sapphire RX 580 Pulse 8GB card. It has a single 8-pin for power, only occupies Slot 1 (unlike the Nitro cards), works perfectly in Mojave and has virtually the same performance as a 590. All for a lower cost and without any special power requirements. Just use a 2x mini-6pin to a single 8-pin cable and that’s it.
It also, in many cases, uses its own dedicated frame buffer in macOS.

I’d avoid the 590 personally.

Thank you @Squuiid and @h9826790 - I'm now looking at the Vega 56 or 64, both of which appear to offer much better performance, at not that much more money.

I'm looking to use this machine for VR in architecture/BIM and GIS.

This is off-topic for this thread, but I'm also interested in a GTX 1070Ti or 1080Ti. The reason for this is that I'd like to use the machine for photogrammetry work. All applications I use in this field require CUDA for this type of workload.

From the information I've absorbed from various MR cMP threads, it seems that nVidia cards can be really problematic - though some in the community seem to have had success; eg: @Dr. Stealth . @h9826790 , your posts seem to pop up quite often on the subject as well.

EDIT: I realized this post wasn't clear as I had not actually asked a question. So here goes:

Given the dual duty that an nVidia GPU could provide me, would it be a good idea to go with a GTX 1070Ti or 1080Ti?

Thanks again

IMO, if you need CUDA, you have no options.

Anyway, stay at High Sierra should be OK for Pascal GPU. My PNY XLR8 1080Ti still works very well in the latest 10.13.6 (which inside my Hackintosh now).

Gotcha. So, UG to Mojave a no-no with a Pascal?
The plot thickens on my end - I'm looking to install a 1TB NVMe SSD, and my understanding is that 140.0.0.0.0. makes installing NVMe via PCIe adapter safe and headache-free...

Correct, there is no driver for Pascal.

You can upgrade to firmware 140.0.0.0.0, and boot 10.13.6 from NVMe natively.

Very interesting. I was not aware that 140.0.0.0.0. could be run from 10.13.6. If you are aware of a thread with instructions on doing this, would you be so kind as to direct me?

I've also been looking for info on the Quadro line, perhaps P1000 or P2000, on cMP 5,1. I would imagine it would be similar to the GeForce 10-series as Q-PX000 are Pascal as well.
It would seem these are a good choice for 3D modeling and rendering. Can you offer any insight on integration to 5,1, or again, direct me to a thread?

thanks again!
