Please don't move this.
A few rumours have suggested that iPhones and iPads might ship with AMOLED displays. I hope they are right, I absolutely love the AMOLED displays on the newest Samsung products. But that's not why I'm making this thread. I'm making it because if this happens, I think that iOS should be and will be redesigned specifically for these devices.
Now I say this because this is what :apple: are great at. Making hardware and software work together seamlessly. And, of course, they've done it once already. With watchOS. The :apple:Watch comes with an AMOLED display, and the OS is built completely around that. For instance, in the home screen, there's a black background, and the icons shrink rather than disappear off the side, making it impossible to tell where the screen ends. And almost every element of watchOS is dark. If the :apple:Watch had an IPS display, the OS would be completely different.
So what if they built iOS in a similar way? Take Safari. Make the search bar black, thicker icons for adding tabs, going back and forward, and make the background in the task switcher completely black. And also a black and white keyboard. Then give that sort of design language to the rest of the OS.
And then a dark mode. As far as I know, Sammy doesn't have one of these on their phones, and I am very surprised. It's perfect for AMOLED. So basically in an iOS dark mode, everything will basically be like watchOS, with a dark everything. Pretty self explanatory.
And finally, make some lock screen tweaks. For example, double tap on the screen to get the time show up, and swipe through some information, kind of like information stream on the S6 Edge. One area where Sammy got it right. And do something about notifications. Instead of lighting up the entire screen, just have the app logo appear in a small space on the screen, then tap to view it. I think things like this could really come in useful.
What do you think?

Your expectations of Apple are too high to be honest.

I bought the iphone 6+ thinking Apple would treat it differently in regards to iOS due to more screen real estate. All I got out of it was split screen native apps in landscape mode and goofy keyboard with an icon of actual glue to represent "paste".

My initial expectations of the Apple watch was a circular face with all these bio sensors and what did we get instead? A heart rate sensing 80's calculator watch with almost unusable honeycomb home page.

I don't know where that Apple is that we both are fond of..but this isn't the Apple you're looking for.

with that being said Apple still manages to be the best out there which is even more disappointing.

It just seems like we dream bigger about what Apple's products could be than Apple does.

Probably won't see AMOLED on an iPhone until iPhone 7 at the earliest. Someone would have found hints of it in iOS 9 if it was anything they were adding to the 6s and 6s+.

Also, pretty much every time there has been any advancements in the iPhone screen, it's done on the remodel (non "s") The 4 had retina, the 5 had 4" screen and 6/6+ had 4.7" & 5.5" (with the 5.5" getting higher res and ppi.)

I think it will happen and Apple will calibrate the display to mute the color saturation. AMOLED doesn't have to look over saturated, but that's how some people like it.

Ive MUCH prefers AMOLED because you can't see where the screen ends on a device, which integrates it more nicely with the hardware.

I would assume the iPhone 6s is going to ship with that, but then again I don't have my hopes high on this one. I don't know why, but I feel like Apple will miss the boat on this and let others take the lead for once, although Apple has always had a fair step in front of competitors regarding displays.

Now, regarding a complete redesign, they won't. Once again, I don't know why, but I think they'll just slam in rounded corners and that'll be it. A Dark Mode would make sense across the entire OS though, and on any device, because the white point in iOS 7/8/9 is horrendous at night.

Let's not pretend AMOLED is the 2nd coming of displays, at least for now.
IPS panels have benefits that AMOLED doesn't have such as sharper images, better colours and better brightness and it also doesn't degrade as fast.

The main thing that is actually awesome about AMOLED is that you don't need a backlight, which saves space and avoids the problem of excessive backlight bleeding.

AMOLED = smaller displays, no light bleeding, deeper blacks.
IPS = better colours, sharper images, better brightness.

AMOLED has lower power usage when the display is majority black.
IPS has lower average power usage when anything other than black is shown. Photos, etc.

There has to be a major UI paradigm change to iOS, that features more black space, than white/color space. OP, you hint at this. But we will see that coming EARLY EARLY. Like June WWDC early.

Notice how black based WatchOS is, because it's running on an AMOLED. This is to maximize energy efficiency.

If iOS10/X goes through a major UI shift to black at the june keynote. You can bet iPhone 7 will feature AMOLED. If it doesn't, then not.
You want to run a boring flat black background with AMOLED for you homescreen...?

Amoled uses less power, has better contrast and shows colours more accurately.

What isn't to love?

Samsung wouldn't give away their screen technology though. Other, non-samsung, handsets with amoled screens use screens that are a few generations old.

While I understand why people like *OLED, I am not sure if I want iPhone and iPad's UI to be designed for OLED (and power usage) in mind. On Apple Watch, such UI works because it was designed not to be distracting (I strongly suspect power savings from OLED was secondary).

That is not to say iPhones and iPads should stick with LCD indefinitely, but I wouldn't want its UI to be predominantly black just for the sake of battery life. Black text on white is easier to read under typical lightning and brightness setting set to non-blinding level, especially those with astigmatism.

The watchOS UI isn't black to be "less distracting". Apple needed a specific goal for battery life and using amoled + black UI was probably the only way to achieve it. If the watch used the same screen type as an iPhone and had a similar UI as iOS the watch wouldn't last nearly as long on a charge. Battery life was the main struggle Apple had with developing the watch. Which is why right now it is the only product they offer with amoled and dark UI.

This is contradictory to a post in this thread. Also Samsung calls is Super AMOLED. It's not a basic AMOLED panel. If that matters.

I would think Apple would not switch to OLED displays until they also increase the iPhones' resolution to 1080p and 1440p, probably in the iPhone 7 and 7+. It would be weird if the 6s and 6s+ switched to OLED but stayed at 750p and 1080p, only to go up to 1080p and 1440p in the iPhone 7.

The iPhone 6+ is 1920X1080. I'm assuming you're referring to the regular iPhone 6?

Right, I'm referring to the regular iPhone 6. It would be strange for them to create a 750p 4.7" OLED display only to be replaced by a 1080p 4.7" OLED display for the next two generations.

I always found the resolution of the iphone 6 to be so odd. One of the reasons I went with the 6+ was because it hand a standard resolution.

Apple would have switched to OLED if it made sense when considering quality and battery life. We keep hearing that OLED is more energy efficient, but if that were true, why don't Android's running OLED have far superior battery life? I know the answer, but my point is, if it were some magical huge energy savings AND the colors and performance met Apple expectations, they would have made the switch already.

We won't ever see OLED on iPhones because of margins, which is completely stupid.

Samsung could make the iPhone displays just like they make the A-series chips.

The only reason I don't like AMOLED displays is because they have potential of burning the screen. I see it at work all the time. At least our screens don't burn, especially if you leave the screen on all night as a bed side alarm clock.

It shows colors less accurately.

Of course. And for some kinds of media consumption, you would actually like colors to be more saturated.

If oversaturation annoys you, you can switch back to sRGB standards.

But at least the option for gorgeous colors is there.
