Are you willing to wait an extra 3 months on the next release to pay in full for the unlocked device? @jamezr are you?
i don't mind paying full price for phones. But if it is a phone I am waiting for......i usually buy on release day :)

But the beauty of TMO and JoD is I can jump to another device from the S7 edge. Then buy the unlocked version for less money :)

That'll depend how much Samsung has wrangled control (if any) from the carriers in terms of bloatware/updates. I'm not holding my breath!

So, yes, I would be willing to wait.

Besides, I foresee the Galaxy line becoming small incremental upgrades moving forward now that it's really hit its stride. Samsung will experiment elsewhere with other lines (foldable displays, the weird camera-ring notification light that might debut on some Samsung J2 device, etc.) while the Galaxy S and Note lines remain faithfully similar with small new features here and there. Like Apple.

I don't think I'll be crazed to update. I can wait 3 months for an unlocked, carrier-free version.

Nice at least you put your money where you mouth is! :) Awesome.

I think it is a bit much to ask full MSRP 3 months out. But I do expect there to be sales on this as well pretty soon. So it will work out nicely for those who wait. Interesting to see what they do with the Note.

These updates should be straight from Samsung. I wouldn't expect any bloat on the phones outside of the Samsung apps.

Are iPhones available unlocked on day one? I wonder if that's another one-up that Apple has with their carrier relations that Samsung doesn't quite yet.

I seem to always remember having to wait a short period before new iPhones were available unlocked, too. But I am not sure.

I'm already thinking that. If this is the model moving foward -- where more OEMs are making their flagships available unlocked -- I actually think I might want out of JoD.

I'm thinking I'll jump to some device I want to try (HTC 10? iPhone 7? Note?) and then return it within the 2 week window and just eat the $50 restocking fee.

Then, I can shop to my heart's desire: Another S7 Edge but unlocked this time. Or HTC Nexus if it's good. Even the iPhone if I so desire.

Unlocked options a plenty. Love it.

It really is when you think about it. There are many amazing options at many different price points.

OnePlus 3; HTC 10; now S7 and S7 Edge; iPhones; Nexus phones; Moto G4 family... and many more. The options out there are nuts.

And you are clearly wrong as videos show 8.4.1 to still be faster and smoother.I admit iOS 9 only improved in performance till the 9.2 mark. Its mostly lacklustre after that especially 9.3 betaa
You continue missing or ignoring what o actually said trying to deflect onto something else. That perhaps is an even underlying point in it all, one that has been there for quite a while. As usual, there's no point going in the same circles over and over again. The point has been made multiple times, and that's really all there's to it.

Both LG and HTC are struggling with sales of their latest flagships.

LG G5 reportedly "failed to generate sales"

http://www.phonearena.com/news/LG-G5-reportedly-failed-to-generate-sales_id82889

HTC 10 sales are way below expectations: HTC struggling to sell 1 million units this year

http://www.phonearena.com/news/HTC-...ing-to-sell-1-million-units-this-year_id82901

With iPhone 7 and the Note 7 coming soon, and even the smaller players like Motorola, and the pair of upcoming Nexus phones this Fall, it doesn't look like sales will pick up anytime soon.

I wonder if we'll see huge price breaks...

Other than Sammy and Google, no one really makes money selling Android. It has market share simply because it's free and stuff onto any cheap device with a screen.

With the sprouting up of all the Chinese manufacturers it would seem that some are..

Where are all these Android smartphones coming from? I understand that in the US, the market share of Android is less than much of the rest of the world but IIRC, it's still over 60%, yet the iPhone is still the best selling smartphone. Outside of Samsung, all we seem to read about is one Android OEM after another failing to meet expectations or even register a blip on the proverbial sales radar. Samsung seems to be the sole Android success story (hardware-wise), and even last year the discussion regarding Samsung was their lackluster performance as well.

This just seems to reiterate that the majority of Android phones are top end, or maybe mid-range devices. Not trying to discount the importance of this because it's obviously having an impact on Apple but it seems to reiterate it's not a good time for all high end smartphone OEMS. Samsung has had a noticeable improvement but it's easier to show improvement when you're following a few subpar years. I think this trend to the middle (or low end) is going to ultimately mean struggles for all flagship devices as we've seems to reach peak smartphone penetration and with Chinese OEMs stretching their wings outside Asia, the pressure is going to get worse.

Going to be an interesting new couple of years.

The Chinese competitors are cannibalizing each other in a price war. Hopefully

We'll this this story repeated again:

https://www.engadget.com/2016/07/01/sony-xperia-x-performance-review/

Don't get me wrong: It's a serviceable device, and in many ways it's actually very nice. The thing is, a $700 smartphone should be able to deliver some modicum of excitement to the person who owns it; the X Performance mostly just leaves me cold.

The major OEMs just can't compete in the high end priced category anymore outside of Apple and Samsung. And with the Chinese OEMs basically cannibalizing each other on the "low end", OP3 no longer needing the invite, etc. It will be interesting to see where this all goes.

LG have already reduced the price of the LG G5 in the U.K. The unlocked version is now going for £425.

On another note Samsung have had their best quarter in two years.

Google don't make money from their nexus devices as they don't sell enough. They make their money from advertising.

Where is the advertising? All I see is Samsung, I dont get why HTC or other OEMS are not spending money on ads..
Most people think Samsung=Android.

I don't get it? lol

From April:

“I think China is not weak, as has been talked about, I see China as, may not have the wind at our backs that we once did, but it’s a lot more stable than what I think is the common view of it. And so we remain really optimistic on China.”

Oh I see, I thought you were joking along with MRU and myself.

You're right though, Tim Cook should have said: 'we are really pessimistic about the Chinese market and don't expect to sell many phones at all.'

The price of the iPhone in China can't be doing their figures much good either. China is a Mecca for cheaper alternatives too so I would think it is one of the hardest markets to crack.
