I'm going to ignore the arguing and focus on what i'm looking to do. Flashed the ROM on my phone this afternoon.

New boot animation:

Another cool thing. When you elect to include weather from weather underground, it appears in the lock screen.

You can argue all day about the aesthetics, but damn, Google has outdone itself this time. A lot more consistency and common sense in its design. The screenshots don't give it all away, but the design springs to life when used thanks to motion and playful animations. Some of the videos I've seen looked incredibly smooth and responsive. I think this may be the point where Android is reaching parity in terms of UI fluidity and UX.

Unfortunately, the fact that Google is all over Android pretty much means that I will never buy an Android device. But credit should be given where it is due, Android has become incredible.

Slider positions have been redone. Look more streamlined.

Yeah they look rather odd.

And please for the love of god include the option to put the back button on the right, unless they're hoping to turn the whole population of the Earth into lefties for some reason.

My opinion - the new home icon looks like the physical button on an iphone. The new recents icon looks like Google now cards.

Chris Nacca just uploaded the best preview yet IMO, quite comprehensive and he manages to squeeze in a lot of stuff I hadn't seen elsewhere.

I'm much more positive after seeing this, starting to really consider picking up a used N5 or N7 just to test this thing out...

Yeah it looks nice and looks fast even for a beta in early stages. I had to go back and see some things twice as that guy was rushing thru it.

I've got to say, while I'm not planning on ever getting an Android device (my 5s will last another 3 years for me), I'm pleased as punch to see the new UI and the fact that Google has focused a good deal on user experience.

The subtle animations (and more importantly the tech that allows for it) is very nice.

For the early testers on android L...can you send GIFS through text to say iPhone owners or other phones in general? I know that was an issue before.

The SMS and mms aren't stable enough for us to attempt such things at this point.

Cool, thanks. For notekeeping I took snapshots of the new stuff in the articles.

The .apk for the new keyboard has been dumped. I'm using it on my S5 and it is very good. Very smooth, accurate and small memory footprint.

Looks good too.

No root needed for the .apk

For those thinking about this, Im reading that it wont work on a Nexus 5 because you have to uninstall the current android keyboard and on a Nexus 5 it cant be deleted due to it being system app.

One of the things I like about iOS devices (compared to Android) is device-based encryption (so flash memory removed from the device can't be read).

Was there any news from Google I/O as to whether this is something that will be added to Android devices in the near future?

(I know Android currently has software-based encryption, but I don't really like this approach)

Works fine on my nexus 5. Installed from play store and set as default keyboard. Just had to go into settings and enable material theme.

Non rooted and completely stock.

This is it. I ordered a Nexus 5. I will keep my iPhone 5s, but sell it if Nexus 5 battery can last a typical work day for me. I hate iPhone 5s: small screen, bezels bigger than low end android phones, rattling power button. Also, I can see the pixels with the low resolution. It seems like iPhone 6 will have less than 1080p and biggest bezels of all phones. Also they keep touch id which tales up too much space. Goodbye, Apple, hopefully. Also tired of buying overpriced phones that is behind time.

For as good as yesterday was on my battery, today has been pretty bad
