Ok so I've been following Ihnatko's twitter feed and someone responded to him finally about his rumor:

deltwalrus:mad:Ihnatko You're a tease. Be a REAL Web 3.0 jounalist and tell the secret. Someone eventuall y will, why not you?

Ihnatko:mad:deltwalrus - Because as you say...I'm a REAL journalist. You don't promise a source something and then burn him or her for webtraffic.

At least that proves he is not out looking for hits to his site or whatnot.

Maybe this Phil guy will do.

I'm sure Steve Jobs is giving him an intense Sarah-Palin-style rehearsal and preparation right now.

Steve: OK, Phil. Listen to me. Right after you announce the new product, and right after they (the crowd) erupt in applause, you never never ever pump your fist and say "booyah" on that stage. Got it?

Phil: Gotcha Steve. Sorry. I won't do it again.

Steve: OK good. Any more questions?

Phil: Hey Steve. Is it OK if I wear a black turtleneck?

Steve: OK, we're done for today.

Phil: Aw, c'mon Steve... I just wanted to...

Steve: I said we're done for today!

Andy Ihnatko is great, easily my favourite tech journalist/commentator, and I am inclined to not only believe him but feel likely I'll be grinning too.

I think most people on this site would enjoy at least a couple of the TWiT podcasts, I agree with those who recommend those.

As to what it'll be? I would like some sort of sandboxed Windows API compatibility. That would be huge. I think it'll be more along the consumer electronics side though.

An iPhone nano doesn't really make sense because it changes the screen res and complicates Apps in that case.
I fail to see why a smaller (or larger for that matter) screen would mess up the resolution. The iPhone Nano's screen could still be 480x320 pixels, only smaller (with smaller individual pixels). The current iPhone has 163 pixels per inch. If, for the sake of argument, the iPhone Nano had 326 ppi, the screen could be half the length and height, but still have the same resolution. Right?

Because touch interface elements are tuned for the screen size. Moreso than with a mouse-based system (where you can always isolate an individual to click on if so desired), the shrinking of a button can make touching it harder. This can especially apply to games with touch interfaces.

So while you can certainly build a smaller-screened iPhone, and run the same applications, the interfaces may be harder to use, and provide a less pleasant user experience. Apple doesn't like that sort of thing.

It would of course be possible for applications to detect which device they're running on and adjust accordingly, but as far as we know developers have not yet been given any such information.

Having said all this, I don't know how bad a problem this would actually be. I do know that some buttons on my Touch are a bit tricky to isolate, and would definitely be more difficult to use on a smaller screen.

When you submit an app to the AppStore you have to check a box that says what devices it runs on. Obviously any future devices are not there.
The upshot of this is that apps currently on the store would not immediately run on the new device (although I suppose it's possible to imagine the app reviewers silently passing certain apps for use on the new device if they feel that it will run ok). This would cover both possible cases of screen size change: same res, different DPI or new res, same DPI,

It would then put the ball back in the court of the developers to update their apps, if appropriate, to run on the new device and thus take their slice of the new audience.

Would developers respond to such a situation quickly. Hell yeah! Speaking as once such a developer (http://www.vconqr.com, since you asked) I'd be making sure it worked correctly as a priority.

If this is what happens I sure hope they beef up their review staff to cope with a huge flood or simultaneous updates!

I have another theory. What about those newly patented ultra capacity batteries? It would fit with the 17 inch battery rumour, and makes sense - if the battery charged in no time and lasted 3 times longer. Imagine if Apple held or had an exclusive right to the patents on such technology, laptops and ipods and iphones that lasted 3 times as long between charges.... that would be the grin alright.

Apple Senior VP Phil Schiller:

"And ladies and gentlemen.... before I wrap up my keynote..... oh, and there's One More Thing....."

Steve Jobs walks into center stage....

Nah. It won't be like that... But I suppose if Steve's up to it, he could be the one that Phil calls on the iChat video session. That's if his weight loss hasn't made him too strange to look at, at the moment.

That would be a fun way to make an appearance without having to be there.

There are rumors about that. The premise is that there haven't been rumors about whatever he found out.

Think of it like this:
What is something Apple would actually come out with. (i.e., tablet, netbook, updated iMac...)
And
Something that you've heard no rumors about in the last 2 months. A whisper might be allowed. I.e., one mention in the last 2 months.

Meet those two condition and you'll have a good idea.

Disclaimer: IDK what Ihnatko is talking about. This is my process explained.

My hopes: A tablet with a docking iMac station. We've heard rumors of a tablet, but only rumors. The docking station would be new and something we haven't heard much about. It seems to the the direction Apple is taking with the new ACD and is something I'd run out to the store on Wednesday to buy.

Oh ok. I hadn't heard any, seeing as I only saw the 17 inch battery rumour the other day, so I met your conditions! Got any links about that then, (I find it interesting)?

This is probably the greatest rumor thread in years. Ihnatko mentions nothing whatsoever in his Twitter post, but despite the complete lack of an actual rumor, everybody will happily fill in the blank with their pet Apple product. The MR snake really can eat itself!

I agree, it's the very best of rumours, in that it stokes excitement without the constraints of any facts to get in the way :D

Facts never mattered much anyway, but steering clear of them can still be something of an inconvenience for wishful thinkers and conspiracy theorists. This rumor is perfect -- a completely empty vessel to be filled up with whatever idea which crosses your mind.
