Apparently you don't follow the news. The Kindle is sold out for months, so obviously there's a demand for that product. Why wouldn't Apple want to get a piece of a burgeoning market, like they did years ago with the ipod?

As of november 23, 2008 they sold 240,000 kindles. That's not very much.
Also, Apple already has mobile devices. The most I can see them doing is providing an easy way to access ebooks on the iphone/touch. The only difference between the kindle and iphone ebook hardware-wise that matters is the fact that the kindle has one of those weird "ink" screens or whatever. No biggie.

You guys are assuming it's some new trinket ... here's the scoop:

Apple buys Microsoft. Ballmer fired. Development of Multiplan 2008 relaunched.

The first year of the ipod Apple sold 366,000 of them. The Kindle hasn't been around a year yet, so I'd say 240,000 is pretty good.

Maybe it will be a Powerbook G5 that docks with a quad-core minitower and has Newton handwriting-recognition technology.

Good point.

Apple would not need to introduce a Kindle type device. Rather, they could introduce a larger touch device, aka, the iPad, tablet, iTablet, etc. It would make viewing most things much easier and better.

I would love a touch that folded when not in use (screen wise). Take it out of your pocket, open it up and enjoy an nice small size book reading surface. Start music and close it up and it continues to play. Sweet.

How about Apple.... pies!

I know it's a mad concept, but I think they might be onto a winner!

Of course! Why didn't I think of it?

The apple iPie is the first apple pie manufactured by the makers of the iPod and iMac. It is from a recipe created by Apple's in-house master chef, Jonathan Ive. Features include seamless integration to far-inferior "blueberry" pies and easy docking with ihome to keep your iPie hot and fresh.
Comes in three colors: Frozen, golden brown and burnt.
Includes pie, pie tin, AC adapter and whipped cream.
Starting at $749

the reason the Kindle has been sold out the last 2 months is because they're releasing revision 2.0 of it in February ;)

hi btw :D

iCancerRemover

In the very end of the keynote Phil says "one more thing", Steve enters the stage. Steve announces the iCancerRemover, witch is in fact a iPod looking device that when used replaces your cancer with a hormone imbalance.

I'm really looking forward to this keynote, hoping for a combined tablet/netbook in some way, but it would be cool if apple cured cancer;)

You guys remember Beverly Hill Cops II? Remember when security threw Eddie Murphy through the glass wall instead of out the door?
Now imagine Apple security throwing Ballmer out in a similar fashion. :D

10 and a half hours to go! :p

Could it be OS X for PCs? I have not read any rumours about that for a very long time and with Snow Leopard being optimised for Intel makes it seem so right for this. It would be very hard to hint this without giving it away and any Mac fan hearing this news would be grinning if they heard it.

I doubt we will see this because Apple makes it money through hardware sales.

The software such as Mac OS X, iLife, iWork, etc. is to sell the hardware.

Apple can continue selling hardware. OS X for PCs would attract even more customers to their products. Of course PCs would have to meet certain criteria (Intel processor, specific graphics cards, etc).

Nope. They will stay the course the way they are going and slowly but steadily gaining market share.

Remember, he said it would put a big smile on the face of any Apple fan.

http://ihnatko.com/index.php/2009/01...-san-francisco

And there was even a small bit of Business. I now have a piece of information that will put a big damned smile on the face of any Apple fan. Just a big, fist-pumping expression of glee.
No, I can’t tell you what it is.
Yes, I’m just a big no-fun jerk.
See, before I was told this thing, I agreed to go off the record. Then I was told that thing, and I immediately said that I took back what I said about going off the record because this was just too damned cool. But…a promise is indeed a promise. I wouldn’t even be saying this much if I hadn’t cleared it first.

AppleTV DVR, Home Server, etc. doesn't seem to fit the definition of a smile on any Apple fan's face. It would make some of us very happy, but not all of us. Likewise, iWork and iLife updates don't qualify either.

The only things I can think of that would offer near universal applause by Apple fans is Snow Leopard being ready to ship today and/or Apple's take on what a netbook should be (a netbook so revolutionary that it can be compared to an iPhone in impact).

Jobs' wife is pregnant.
Remember that the definition is it'll make everyone smile, not making everyone excited.
He has "a piece of information".

In other words, it's something "personal".

We'll see in a few hours :)

It could also be news about Apple buying another company, like nVidia or Adobe for example.

Just expanding on this.
It could, of course, be a grandchild.

1. Bill Gates is joining the Board of Directors.

2. The iPhone is getting cut and paste.

3. Apple is doing a 2-for-1 stock split.

4. The Beatles on iTunes (with a Paul/Ringo on stage performance).

5. Apple is the new corporate sponsor of the San Jose Sharks. Or, rather, iSharks.

6. A line of Apple clothing (so MacRumors forum members can pick one another out on the street).

7. The long (but not recently) rumored Apple video camera.

8. The return of the "Think Different" campaign (and equally important, an end to the "I'm a Mac" campaign).

9. Apple condoms. In the original iMac flavors, of course.

10. iWork '09 - a free download for all existing Mac users.

Or maybe something else entirely...
