I don't know all the options of GV but if it offers voice to text and I believe att makes you pay for that feature...I could be wrong I'm going off YouTube videos...

Isn't it a way to stop the stock message notification? Therefore you just get the GV notification

Actually voice to text is free within the app.

Yep this kind of things that pop up randomly on my SG3 that I had briefly made me go back to iOS. This and amongs many other issues mainly the horrible power button placement. Try pressing volume up without accidently pressing power. home button is not recessed so you accidently pressed it for no reason. You can tell Samsung did not think things carefully of hardware button placement.

I actually find the power button on Samsung devices absolute genius. The droid DNA for example still has its power button on top which is a huge hassle and is justifiably criticized in its reviews. If you're having trouble with the volume controls I suggest practicing holding the phone properly.

You really should try the nexus 4. You get a great screen, and immediate updates. I do my backups with go backup. (I also have root and a custom ROM)

You know what, you just describe why people like Android better than IOS. You had the "ability" and "freedom" to change what you didn't like! I mean you was forced to like what IOS gave you so you think that how thing "suppose" to be!
Having choices doesn't mean any of those choices are going to be good, or better than the alternative where you have less choices. It's not like you have zero choice on iOS either, I could easily be using Chrome or Dolphin as my browser. It's true they're just reskinned versions of Safari, but if I want a different layout, or apps with some different functionality, they're there.
I would like to point out it has gotten better and you can no make backups of your phone. Plenty of tolls out there and they do not require root access. You hook your phone to your computer run it. The phone will alert you to a back up being made and it will ask if you would like to password protected it and then it is made. When you restore a back up it will prompt you for a password. Leave blank if no password and it restores everything.
Which apps can backup a non-rooted Jelly Bean device, all app data, app settings, device settings etc and restore them to a non-rooted Jelly Bean device?

Unless the situation has changed very, very recently (and after looking again, it still hasn't), there isn't a single one. I couldn't find a single one that could do what I was looking for.
What is so bad about the built in backup to google that no one seems to even mention it? That is all I used after I wiped my N4 and started from scratch. To me it was even easier than iOS. Soon as I signed into Google it asked if I wanted to restore and I said yes.

I should note that I had to have camera roll backups turned off on my iPhone and iPad. 5GB, shared, didn't cut it.

Michael
Google's backup is terrible, it backs up next to nothing. No app data and no app settings for a start, which is a pretty damn big start.

Just wondering why you would use GV for voicemail instead of the AT&T messages app which sets up visual voice flawless?

1. AT&T system does not convert the Voice mail to Text.

2. I have never had one of AT&T phones that qualified (4G LTE Android) and again it is inferior to GV

AT&T limitation for VVM are complete and utter bull crap. Just like how they are blocking face time over 3G. They have no good reason for it and besides GV is better for voice mail any how.

link to the app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wxLDMsImNvbS5hdHQubW9iaWxlLmFuZHJvaWQudnZtIl0.

From the app description
• Upgrade to Visual Voice mail with Text to read your messages as text ($3.99/mo)

You really should of check the app out in the play store first because I do not know what planet you are on where 3.99/mo is free because it sure is hell is not hear.

WRONG APP........^^^^^^^

As I mentioned previous posts, I said "AT&T Messages" app. Your the one that's visiting another planet. ;)

Here's the link ..... https://play.google.com/store/apps/...S5hdHQuYW5kcm9pZC5tb2JpbGUuYXR0bWVzc2FnZXMiXQ..

Worked fine for me.

The only app data that I really care about is from contacts, email, calendar, and photos. All of that is handled by the cloud.

I don't keep text messages and call logs around long enough to care about backing them up.

So I won't even bother looking for another backup solution. Though it is nice to know there are plenty of options should I change my mind.

As long as I am out of the confines of the walled garden I am happy. :)

I happily ran to install AT&T Messages app.... but alas it won't seem to run. "Unfortunately AT&T Messages has stopped" every time I try to open it.

Dang!

Well, that's why it worked fine for you. If you want a backup of your app data and app settings (and texts etc.), which is something a lot of people are going to want, you're screwed. And there's no options on Jelly Bean devices if you aren't rooted (I'm happy to be shown wrong here).

Coming from iOS I am thrilled I was able to root my Nexus 4 the day I got it.

I was tired of waiting for iOS jailbreaks to use the apps that made iOS bearable to me.

So I have enough backup options should I decide to go with one. Rooting on android is trivial and something that can be depended upon. None of that tethered crap either. A breath of fresh air, actually.

It really depends on your phone, but from my experience, The Nexus and Galaxy devices are very easy to root.

Personally, I'm rooted so I never worried about this. But there is this app called My Backup Pro. I've never used it but it has a good rating. More info here:
http://android.appstorm.net/how-to/...-back-up-your-android-device-without-rooting/

There's also this guide from XDA, but it's completely understandable that the average user wouldn't want to do this:

This is why I switched back to IOS from Android. Specificially from an iPhone 4 to a SGS3 to an iPhone 5.

I made the exact same transition......but with one more step. I bought a droid DNA last week and couldn't be happier. I had a lot of the same thoughts, but in the end, i bought the SGS3 because I was tired of iOS and a small screen. I just didn't like Touchwiz, the pentile screen, or the platicy feel. Go look at a DNA. The screen blows the iphone5 away, and its smoking fast. IMO, sense is SO much nicer that Touchwiz.

Sure it's trivial to you, but to anyone who isn't a tech enthusiast, or isn't experienced in Android phones/tablets already? It'll be an incredibly daunting experience. Telling someone who isn't all that confident with computers that they need to go trawl through 'XDA forums' to find a 'toolkit', that will upon install, more than likely ask to install unsigned drivers and other assorted prompts (that will more than likely freak people like that out, I know my parents ask me about almost every program they install- bar ones they trust from big name publishers, like MS, Apple etc.), isn't going to go down all that well. The toolkit I used to unlock my Nexus 7 brought up a command prompt, that sure is user-friendly! I'm sure that's not the case with all of them, but hey, that's one sure fire way to freak someone who isn't confident with computers out.

Well that's... insulting. I know plenty of incredibly intelligent people who aren't advanced computer users, that doesn't make them unintelligent- they know the basics, how to use them and various programs/accessories, basic troubleshooting etc., but trawling through XDA forums to find toolkits for their phones is not something that they would be comfortable with, nor want to do when there are alternatives that don't require it. Some people also don't want to have to invest a stack of time into getting these sorts of things working- that doesn't make them unintelligent, or lazy, or whatever insult you'd apply to them, they just want a product that's going to do what they want out of the box. Tinkering around with gadgets to get them to do the things you want them to do is something a lot of people are just not into.
Has anyone tried this app My Backup Pro? I'm rooted so I can't check if it backs up non-rooted phones.
I tried it a while back on my Nexus 7. It doesn't work for non-rooted Jelly Bean devices, I can't speak for ICS and earlier versions though.
This is also what it reminded me of:

I am trying the S3 now with metro pcs no contract offer. I did not even activate a plan yet.

If I like it enough, I will go for it. Easily a better option for me thsn the Iphone 5 with higher plan prices which I do not need.

One of the best things about iPhones is the way icloud backs EVERYTHING up. There is currently no single android solution to this

Exactly why I won't use android as my first choice. I have the S4 but I trust my iPhone more. It's also more reliable and most app perform better and are better designed for it ex spotify, navigon which I use daily.
I do miss swype key most of anything though.
