You guys are real troopers. This phone feels like a kickstarter campaign without the kickstarter. I don't think you'll necessarily get burned here but may just end up with a phone that you paid way too much for that gets little support and will be on sale for $100 in a year.

I dunno what little support means. If the phone ships with some giant software or hardware bug, it gets sent back.

Quite honestly, buying phones through any of the Android OEM's can sometimes be a crapshoot. I had a good experience with HTC, for example, but apparently many others haven't. Samsung has had a mixed track record, same with OP. Buying a phone from Motorola prior to Lenovo taking over was a pretty terrible experience.

So, basically, I don't see this proposition as any different than anyone else. It's a great form factor with probably stock Android. And if I worried about how much a phone costs in a year, I wouldn't buy any Android flagship at release. Look at the S8 models. All Android phones drop in price, yet people - myself included - still enjoy buying them at launch because we like gadgets.

If this is vaporware and doesn't get released, so be it.

Me too.....Plan on getting this and the Nokia 8

I was originally jumping back and forth between this and a Note8. Now I think the LG V30 will be my other OTHER Android phone this fall. ;)

This phone screams Amazon Fire smartphone all over again. I bet early next year this phone is on sale for half price, would not be surprised some March of next year and this thing is selling for $349.

Just got an email invite to the "first look" of the phone...in 2 weeks. Maybe I should go, it's in my hood.

Then maybe they'll announce a release date? lol this is comical

Hope this phone does well enough that Essential keeps on keeping on. It's already making waves without actually shipping a single phone.

If they finally start shipping and there are no issues with the phone, they have a shot. A highly stylized Pixel-esque device that is actually available would seem to be able to generate a fanbase.

The new iphone somewhat copies the design of the Essential....notches of different width I guess....lol

They better release soon and not too close to the Pixel 2. Because the new Google phone will take all the news and be a very competitive, if not better device

I might have to admit I was wrong and eat crow a little. The phone is now available from Telus in Canada for pre order for 1050. No subsidies on this one. It’s 1050 straight out. Out of reach for many already

yeah...how does that work? They haven't released a product yet? Or....they people that have seen the phone and tried it believe it is so good they are will to invest millions and value the company at the current rate.

Probably a combination of the names involved more than anything else. It can't be that special, it is just a phone at the end of the day.

kinda my point....if it was just a phone....why a billion? I mean they had to get additional VC funding of 300 mil to get the final production and distribution funded. If the VCs thought it would flop...they would not pour cash into it.

Ah 1050 cad outright and 290 down with a plan minimum of 95 dollars a month. A extra 100 lands you the 360 camera module at Telus. Currently it’s the only company here set to sell it

It’s pretty simple, Fox con invested $3 million into the company at a certain percentage, so when you extrapolate those numbers, the company has magically worth $1 billion.

Culpan has written some good stuff, but I’m not sure about this valuation.

A proxy war by any other name ... is a sunny day ahead without clear fingerprints on the forecast.

Because it's Andy Rubin

Exactly. And because anyone can sell a Loch Ness monster until time to ship it.

tbh and considering the cyberwarz of mega data miners, my next essential phone is likely to be a clamshell voice-only thing a little bigger than a golfball like back when VZN had them as their base service model.

Well that will get me an easy play with it at least as I can basically walk to BB. :)

Heck I might just pick it up for curiosity sake.

I guess this means the phone will actually be released. Right? RIGHT???

Shocked when I saw it on BB’s website so I guess so. And Amazon is showing a screen protector available 8/31.

I admit I have not followed this discussion.

Yeah, I was mostly joking. They're obviously gonna release it. I don't quite understand what the strategy will be from a marketing standpoint. The Note is going to eat up most of the tech/Android press next week. Then again, Essential is the closest thing to "new" in the industry, so maybe that in and of itself will generate hype.

Looks like review units have been sent out. But people can't publish their reviews yet.
