of course!

I can right this ship though, how's the phone been for you now that you've had it a bit longer?

It has been great. :)

I am in a right old predicament now - which to keep?!

It's the form factor that I'm liking the most. Someone at work thought I had an iPhone X earlier. :p
It really is a very well designed phone.

I tell you what I don't really like though, and I have said this before about the Pixel I had last year.
I don't think I like stock Android too much. Bare bones is not good for me.
The biggest thing is the lack of a notification in the corner of an app which tells me I have a notification... I know that sounds ridiculous with Android as they're all in the notification bar at the top, but it isn't quite the same.

And I know I can add a luancher to do that but I have never got along with other launchers, I always use the stock ones that come with phones as I've never had issues with any I've used so far.
Oreo will hopefully address that somewhat.

Battery has not been good for me but I have been messing with it ALL day. Wallpapers apps, messing with wallpapers, using it as a normal phone, so social media, texting etc. I've also had the screen on for over an hour straight when following tennis scores live. So it has been an exception. But it will need charging as soon as I get in.

Someone in my phonebook called me earlier and I have pictures for all my contacts. The Essential call screen is nice, but the contact pictures are not. They're very small, but the pitures look garbage, really pixellated as if they've been blown up too much - which is funny seeing as they're acually tiny compared to the picture uploaded to the contact! :D
Not sure what's going on there.

I don't like the vibrate on the phone. It is audible. Sounds odd, but it's a vibrate you can hear. My XZp had a great vibrate, this is tinny. It feels extremely cheap which undermines the whole design give how premium it is.
Wouldn't be a problem if I didn't have to feel it (and hear it!) every time I pressed the command buttons at the bottom. I know I can turn vibrate off, but I like the feedback from the buttons.

Other annoyances.
The 'clear all' button when you press square. Why do I have to scroll all the way through my open applications right to the top to be able to clear? No sense!
The clear all on my XZp is visible as soon as you hit square, this is time consuming and backwards. Very frustrating.

Some apps look terrible and don't seem to be optimised for the screen - like BlueMail which I use. The whole top nav bar is cut off! Don't know what to do about that but I don't really want to use anything else. Will investigate this further later on.

LED not working.
Lol as if. As I typed that I got a Facebook notification and the light is blinking blue now.
Ok, I'll change that. LED INTERMITTENTLY not working. :p
Will have to investigate this too.

Wi-fi drops.
We have work wi-fi which is very strong. I moved from my desk to the canteen (Caffiteria? for you American's :) ) and it completely dropped out. No other phone I've had has done that. It re-connected on my way back up.
Seems there's problems here still.

That's about it for my thoughts 24 hours in.
A few niggles here and there. If these can be ironed out, it's a winner. Be nice to have Oreo hit soon so I can experience that on there.

I'll post again tomorrow after a full 48 hours.

Yeah, the form factor is what I love the most about this phone, having a large screen in a manageable size is awesome. And yup, it's also hyped me up about the iPhone X.

I was watching Lisa from MobileTechReview and she mentioned it has the same camera sensor as the G6, and from what I've heard that's a very good camera, so hopefully it can fixed.

Light was fading for the last pic and the Google camera seems to have picked up much more detail.

The Essential camera doesn't seem too bad in some instances though.

The indoor pictures look good on the Essential, very close to the Pixel's. But the outdoor pics do look better on the Pixel.

Yeah, the Google camera app, with my highly unscientific test of zooming in as much as the forum allows, shows more clearer detail insofar that I can read the white sign on the left a lot easier.

Essential cam looks ok and sounds more improvements coming. If you have a phone older the than 2 years, Essential is likely an upgrade as it stands right now as far as camera.

Will see what the IPx preorder lottery turns out for me. If I get one tonight it’ll be my toy for the next bit, but if not, onto trying out the Essential.

And these are tonight's battery results. These will be the last ones I do, generally I'm charging throughout the day but I left it off the charger since there's new interest in the phone since the price drop and many were curious on the battery life.

Got in, had one in my cart for in store pickup next Friday. Blasted new card I set up for Apple Pay had a minor issue. By the time I corrected it, a minute later, it had gone from in store pickup next Friday to 2-3 week shipping.

So no go. Besides impatience, and it wasn’t do or die as it seems to be for many here, I don’t trust the shipping times vs in store availability, so hope to get lucky on an in store pickup via a service. That’s probably unlikely to occur anytime soon, though it worked out with AirPods I tried out just after launch, so we will see...otherwise cest la vie.

Congrats on your acquisition and interested to see how you review the IPx given your frame of reference with Android and especially Essential.

Well cleaver me went and dropped the phone this morning.
I say dropped, I had it in my jogger pocket and got in the car and it fell out onto cement.
Brilliant.
So all the right side is scuffed.

So angry.
I know what it's like when I wear these so I should have just kept hold of it.

Learned my lesson with jackets, use the inside pockets where applicable.

This smartphone is by means a slam dunk for lots of folks, depends on your needs. For $499 it is loads better than $699 for justification.

Ouch, that sucks. At least nothing broke, while the scuffs suck it’s better than broken.

Are the scuffs rough?

My own fault!

I've most definitely learned my lesson anyway!

And they look rough, but only one of them is. I guess I need to be thankful if didn't land screen down as that could have been much worse.

I've made my mind up on the phone though as a whole. It's a keeper.
I say this, but as I use it I can't help but wonder what the iPhone X would be like as they're very similar designs. And even though there's a monumental difference in price, it's pretty obvious that the X will likely be the more polished device of the two.

I love the Essential though. The feel n hand is amazing. That screen never fails to impress me. Someone asked me if I thought it was dim a few days ago, and I've heard others complain of it. I cant say enough that it is far from dim. It's gorgeous. I haven't tried it in bright sunlight though, so that's always a test.

Camera is performing more than well so far (Google one) and battery life seems reasonable.

I just can't get the X out of my head now and it is not good...
I downloaded the official X wallpapers to my Essential just now though, and they look amazing. So i'm halfway to an X and that'll have to do. :p

Bit disappointed in the battery for this if I'm honest.
Had to reach for the charger way before bed time the last two evenings. Granted, it has had more use than normal as it is new, and I've been following tennis scores so screen on time is much longer than normal, but still not as good as my last two phones.

It's one thing that has become quite important to me over the last few months as having two phones previously that have outstanding battery life (KEYone and XZp) has made me appreciate that a fair bit.

I have also had some stutters and slow downs with this device.
Not a flicker of that with my XZp, anywhere, since having it. This has really lagged a couple of times now and it's a bit jarring to experience having not been used to it for a while. Android really has come on leaps and bounds.

So far I'm a bit undecided. I love the phone, but there are a lot of shortcomings. The Google camera app is a good fix, but when you take a snap and click into the photo from the thumbnail, the share, edit, delete buttons all fall in the same place as the Android navigation buttons (square, circle, triangle) so you cannot do anything to the photo unless you go out and then into the photo app. A small one, but very aggravating.

Important things to me in phones these days are battery, camera and screen. Screen - I cannot complain. It's fantastic. Camera needs work. Battery not great. And there are all these additional issues which are hampering the experience.

The problem I have now though, is my XZ Premium has since lost its shine after the Essential has come into my life.
Not literally, as it is basically a mirror - so still plenty shiny :D, but it feels very dated now. I know a lot of people have always thought that, but I always loved the design. Still do, but the reachability and sheer size / square-ness of the phone is now seeming to be a problem after using something as ergonomically sound as the Essential.

I would normally just sell them both and pick something else up. But that iPhone X (the only one I'd want right now) is soooo expensive. :(

Anyone have an Essential friends and Family code they are not going to use? I'd be interested in it if so.

Anyone with this phone followed the XDA guide to get apps to fill the whole screen using the Layout Whitelist app?

It is extremely confusing to me and doesn't appear to be working. Trying to do it on Mac but it just isn't having any of it.
Following the guide on this link:

https://www.xda-developers.com/essential-phone-force-apps-fill-screen/

I have followed the steps to allow ADB and think I have done that, but I'm not getting a prompt on my phone to 'Allow USB Debugging'.
I have been into Developer Options too and changed the USB Connection mode then connected to my MacBook but don't seem to be able to complete step 7 of the walkthrough.

Annoying me. :(

Me again. o_O

Now it has been a good few days with the Essential I feel like I have really found my groove with it.
Don't want to part with it now and I picked my XZp up last night and it actually felt massive and old fashioned!

It's one of the better form factors for a phone IMO.
Flat screen, no bezel virtually but a big enough chin to be functional and not ruin the design.

It still makes me yearn for the X to see exactly what that is going to perform like, but for now I am very impressed with Essential.

Even the Google camera performs admirably which is surprising as I expected it to be complete garbage.
I am missing a case though. I normally go case-less with bigger phones as I don't like to add unnecessary bulk. But with Essential, it's pocketable and one handable enough to warrant a slight bulk increase for protection. Something like Apple's official silicone / leather case would work wonders on this!

Only thing I am not a fan of is the back fingerprint scanner. Having used a phone where it's on the side for so long, this is a step backwards. I hate that I have to pick the phone up everytime I need to unlock it. Not ideal.

For the price I got this for I really have nothing to complain about. It was a steal!

Me again again. Sorry lol :D.

What have we here.

UcJE89c.png

Ooooo.
Loving the new update, really makes the device feel more "complete". Love the gesture for notifications, one of my favorite features of the Pixel. All that's missing now is night mode, which is supposed to come with Oreo.

I love the form factor. Last couple of years I've been constantly switching between the regular and plus model of iPhones, as well as smaller Android with the phablets. I always got tired of carrying such a large device but then end up missing the larger screen. This is no compromise, get a small manageable phone while still getting a large screen. Hyped for my iPhone X.
