Ok.

Not been long, but I'm nearly all set up so can give a very brief first impression.

Arrived safe and sound - wasn't particularly well packaged, which concerned me, but all ok. :)
Took it out the box and the feel is just incredible. The ceramic back feels great and there's a really nice weight and heft to it.

Set up was fairly quick, I set up as new as I needed a clear out of my XZ Premium which I hadn't got round to, so thought I'd go from scratch.
Screen is decent. Nothing will compare to my XZ Premium, and it doesn't, but it's still very serviceable and looks good to my eyes.

I downloaded the Google camera straight away after set up and then had to head out with the dog.
Camera seems good to me so far, (the Google one). Some pictures shot in HDR were a little sluggish to capture, and I have to say I do like the camera layout of the Essential camera app, but there's definitely an improvement on the Google one.

See some quick snaps of the dog below.
Pretty decent?

And these are just taken in fading light indoors. Top is Google camera, bottom is Essential.
Not a great test I know, but I'll do more soon.

Early impressions are good - not blown away.
There are some very noticeable issues straight away. I have a 4g mobile broadband dongle currently as I have just moved into a new house on a new housing development and there is no broadband here yet. We're all being messed around by the providers, but my point is, the 4g broadband I'm using is decent enough but the Essential drops signal when connected to it when I move rooms. Going from the living room (where the 4g box is) to the kitchen - it completely drops. My XZ Premium is on and connected and that barely flickers.

In the living room currently and the XZ Premium has full signal to the box, the Essential is missing a few bars.
I know a couple of people have mentioned this online and in other forums potentially, but I have noticed it first hand and it is a little concerning. Particularly when my house is three storey and the master bedroom is on the top floor. If it disconnects on the same floor in the kitchen then god help it two floors above. Again, my XZ Premium stays connected pretty strongly.

Another thing - the display size. I don't mean the size in inches, I mean the on screen size. Everything seems tiny. Text is very small, images like apps are a bit smaller. I have changed the display size from 'default' to large, but it takes it too large and it doesn't look great. That's something I guess I'll have to get used to or settle on.

One thing I do like is how I can use the phone with one hand. I haven't been able to do that since the iPhone 6?
KEYone was one-handable, but it was difficult to use the keypad with one hand. This is a really nice change for me!

The phone obviously looks gorgeous, and the bezel-less look is where the future is it would seem. However I'm not sure if that's something I'm hugely struck on. Aesthetically, it's fantastic, but in every day use I find it a little awkward. I felt the same when I tried the S8.
I know my XZ Premium has huuuuge bezels, but the phone is so comfortable despite being noticeably larger.
Function over form is sometimes where it should be.

Tricky one so far.

There is lots to like, but there are some problems. The connectivity seems to be a problem at the moment and it is slightly worrying.
I do like that there is a glance display though, really like that.
And you only have to pick the phone up to get your glance screen, which shows all notifications. Pretty sweet. My XZ Premium is sorely lacking that.

I'll spend more time with it in real world use and post back with my findings.
It's quite telling though, that I pick my XZ Premium up after using the Essential for a bit and don't think "omg this is so dated". It's the opposite. Like a comfy pair of slippers haha.
Maybe spending the day in work with it tomorrow will help me form a better opinion. :)

Yeah, I find the camera is quite good in good to decent lighting, it's low light where it really struggles.

For your signal issues, have you downloaded the latest update to carrier services from the play store? Also, are you running the latest build? If you go to settings, about phone, build, you should be on NMI81C, as that's the latest.

Also, go to settings, more, and to make sure you have the correct settings.

And in display, i know you mentioned changing the display size, but have you tried making the font larger?

Would love to see more pictures of the white model, it's the first white phone since the HTC One M7 that I've really liked. Is the earpiece white? In a video I saw the earpiece kinda stood out and it looked like the phone had another notch, but in the photo you posted it looks uniform.

Yup, made the font bigger and that has helped a little which is good. :).

Where do we find the build number?!
That sounds familiar though, as out of the box I had some system updates to run through and it's saying that it is up to date.

Re carrier settings - where do I find in the play store? Sorry for my noob behaviour haha.

@widgeteer performance seems ok so far. No slow downs or stutters that I'm aware of. I have been into developer options though and removed all animations. That's made it feel a hell of a lot faster.

Another annoyance.
The LED doesn't flash. I've downloaded light manager Pro which I always use on my android devices, and is normally perfectly. But so far the LED has only blinked to tell me the battery is low.

This is from an AMA on October 4th.

Essential said:
You should be seeing an OTA today. There are lots of stability and performance improvements. We are working with all our carrier partners to improve service across their networks. Now for your feature list:

fingerprint reader gestures - this is in progress but didn't make it into today's OTA. We're targeting the next one

night mode - this depends on HWC2 which wasn't ready for this chipset in the N timeframe. Good news though, you'll have it in O (I love this feature too!)

double tap to wake - We're not working on this one right now

notification led color customization should work with any play store app -- I'll have QA try some out and if there's a bug we'll fix it

vibe intensity - we don't have anything in progress right now

We're working hard on camera improvements so stay tuned. -Rebecca

You should email both the developer and essential so they are aware of the issue, even though they said they were going to look into it, it's better if you email them to make sure.

As for carrier settings, just go into the play store and search "Carrier Services".

Seeing as my pixel XL 2 order has started showing signs of finally being processed, I think I'm going to back burner this phone for at least a little bit.

Both colors are sitting in my Amazon wish list still :)

As I pointed out above, if one is not concerned with being locked down with a carrier, you can actually get a new S8 under $500 (verizon) or a bit over $500 (AT&T) right now at Best Buy. Then again, the initial comment may have implied certain conditions, such the phone being unlocked.

To be clear, I'm not suggesting the Essential phone isn't intriguing at that price--certainly more so than the original price. As I mentioned before, I'd be interested if it had a better camera--the shutter lag definitely prevents it from consideration for me.

LED lights are starting to work now. Not sure what was happening before.
Starting to really enjoy using this. It's the size more than anything. Such a great feel in the hand and pocket ha.

It's all ticking along very nicely too. No slow downs to note yet, but I wouldn't expect there to be any with this chip set etc. My XZ Premium has the same specs and it's a champ so I'd expect nothing less from this.

Cannot settle on a wallpaper though. Starting to annoy me :p.

I got an essential delivered from the Amazon.com to the UK yesterday too.

I've not really owned an android phone for any amount of time since the Nexus 4 and always had an iPhone again.

Today I have left all my Apple stuff at home, iPhone 7 Plus, Apple Watch even my AirPods in an attempt to see what it's like Apple-less.

I've got most of my apps and stuff on here. There doesn't seem to any really good parcel tracking apps but everything else is there really.

The phone design is really nice and at the new price point pretty impressive really. It feels good in the hand and every time I look at it I'm impressed.

The screen on my unit has a little bit of light bleed which is a shame.

Tried the camera last night with my 2 and 3 year old so quite a challenge and I can see why people are disappointed. It was indoor in the evening so outdoors and day light might be different but I go a lot of blurry or really soft photos whereas it as effortless to get a decent photo with my iPhone.

I do really like the mono camera though and for some reason I think the photos look sharper.

I've installed the Google camera to try out.

As said above the text seems quite small on web sites and so the keyboard is a little cramped but as said I come from an iPhone 7 Plus so perhaps I'm just used to that.

All in all its a nice phone.

Not too dissimilar to my thoughts really.

I have mine with me at work today so will see how I get on without the XZ Premium next to me.

Like I say it's really nice to have a phone that is useable with one hand again.
To fix the text being small, I've kept text size at default and I've increased the screen size to large. Whilst that makes everything a bit too big on the home screen, I've noticed it doesn't change the size of the apps in the dock in the home screen, only those outside of it. So I've not out any apps on there and just used folders in the dock.

It's made a big difference as that was the only thing that was annoying me really.

Yeah it's nice and I think that's probably the best to describe the phone, its just nice nothing amazing that's going to blow you away.

It does charge very fast with the supplied plug, I was impressed with that.

Do you find the screen a bit dim? I'm having to use pretty much full brightness?

It does make me think the iPhone X with its similar form factor and better screen / camera etc could actually be pretty awesome.

The screen doesn't seem dim to me, no. Doesn't seem super bright either, but I wouldn't say dim but I guess it depends what you're ued to looking at.

And yeah, the X will likely be great. My only concern with the X is the lack of fingerprint reader as I just find to be the most convenient method of unlock. However I haven't experienced Apple's facial unlock so can't comment.

Also, iOS bores me to tears and the price is ridiculous so I ruled it out a while ago.

My Essential LED is no longer flashing. I have WhatsApp and Instagram notifications and my XZ Premium used to rotate between assigned colour flashes but this isn't doing either!

I need to do the thing that makes apps go full screen. I read about it the other day but need to connect to my MacBook to get it working. Will do that when I get home.

Reading you and Aneres' comments with interest... ALMOST pulled the trigger the other day once the price dropped. Even shipped to the UK it's priced reasonably now.

However, my main pause is the camera. Like you, Michael, with a six-year-old, shutter speed matters. As does shooting indoors. I have a mirrorless Sony which I use most of the time but otherwise, it's a Pixel (my backup) or 6s (daily/Watch driver).

As long as shots are clear and capture the moment, that's the main thing so it really needs to be on par with a Pixel 1. Or at least close.

The whole bezel-less thing is not such a big deal as I've had the S8, Note 8, and the original Mi Mix. They look nice but can be a bit troublesome with holding them safely and without initiating false touches.

Anyway, keep the reviews coming. I'm still hopeful of them sorting out the camera software unless it's just a poor sensor choice (?).

In all honesty, I'm pretty impressed with results from the Google camera.
I took some in pretty low light last night and did the same on my XZ Premium and could hardly notice a difference between them on screen.

I'll do more later and upload them though to see properly.

Camera is certainly passable for my liking but if you've come from a Pixel or iPhone you may find it lacking in sheer speed and reliability.

wow! quite the spread! thanks! ;)

Yeah. The oldest is my wife's, but I've been in her life since she was 5. I mostly claim her as my own - as much as anyone would want to claim a 15 year old! Haha! The other three are mine, according to my wife. It took my wife 2 years to convince me have another. I finally gave in because I assumed I wouldn't want to hear it from her for the next 50 years of my life. And then we get two with the last one.

Having twins is the greatest most frustrating and tiring thing you'll ever do. I wouldn't change it. But there are days I wouldn't wish it on my enemies. But once they get old enough to interact with each other - it really is a sight to see!

Thanks! I know this is off-topic from the op, but we're truly excited. We know there will be many hard and frustrating days, but in the end, the joy of raising them will out weigh the exhaustion and frustrations.

Yeah we really went off topic. But you'll learn it's like a club or support group. When anyone says anything about twins, you have to join in. Or if you see people out with twins and yours aren't with you, you have to talk to them about having twins.

I wish you guys the best. I mean it, when I say it's awesome. Is it tiring and draining? Oh hell yes!! But you couldn't pay me enough money to change it. I actually think it's better than just having one at a time. And as they get older, it's just incredible to see them interact. When my son sees my daughter and he hasn't seen her for ten minutes he gets REALLY excited. But then he also likes to steal her toys and her pacifier and make her cry.

Do you know what you're having? Obviously we have boy/girl twins. People still ask us if they're identical. Umm, biology says they can't be...

Thanks! My wife's brother also has twins so we'll at least have someone in the family that can provide pointers. Both are boys. We we're kind of hoping for boy/girl twins, but it honestly doesn't really matter to us... well, except I'm kind of glad it wasn't 2 girls.. .because then having 3 girls would be a bit nuts... well, maybe more nuts than life is already going to be :)
