Just wait until Black Friday and Christmas. It will be even lower than $499. It’s only a matter of time. Just like LG phone...wait a few months for a much lower price.

Ahh, it's only the white one that is $499 on Amazon.
Which is handy (and tempting) seeing as that's the one I want...

It works out at like £390 for the phone and then £90 for shipping and fees.
Still a very good price for a phone (under £500 all in) which is more inkeeping with what I want to pay.

BRB, tormenting myself.

The Pixel 2 is too small with ridiculous screen to body ratio nowadays. The XL is too large, too tall and too expensive.

Glad I gave this a try, it ain't going back.

What I think did it for me was reading about how they are updating the device pretty regularly. Oreo is set to bring a tonne of things that are missing (night mode / blue light being the big one) and that's something I don't have on my XZ Premium at the minute so it's welcome.

Hopefully they can keep updating the camera, but seems like they've made steps to doing that already.

I'm excited to get my hands on it and see how it compares. A phone with this size screen in a smaller body is going to be strange - I hope it isn't too jarring like I found with the S8 as I didn't enjoy that too much personally.

With a better camera, this would be quite tempting at this price point.

that's still what's holding me back from re-ordering. I'd love to have it if it wasn't for the camera. The google camera goes a long way on quality but my main issue was shutter speed. I have a 2 year old and twins on the way. My excitement for the Pixel is that no matter what the situation, I'm pretty much going to get a great pic of my kiddos, with them constantly moving or not (always the former ;) ).

Hey, congrats dude!
Exciting times! :)

Totally hear you about shutter speed. I have a very lively labrador who only sits still when food is involved!
Be interesting to see how it performs with him!

If I don't like the phone, or I can't get over its short comings, I'll stick to my XZ Premium.

Big issue for me too. 2.5 year old, and another one on the way (just one though).

Although there are the benefits of being unlocked for the Essential, it's also worth pointing out you can actually get an S8 for cheaper than this right now through Best Buy. I know you don't get stripped down Android, but just some perspective of the current price point maybe not being as great as it's made out to be. But again, still an obvious improvement.

You're probably right but the only caution I would give folks is to be careful. If the price drops too low you're dealing with a fire sale, which means a dead product. If you just want it to have as a "toy", go for it. If it's going to be your serious daily driver, think it through.

yeah, the S8 absolutely bottomed out in price pretty quickly. I had one at launch and loved it but prefer my Note 8 now over the S8. I still like stock Android better even though my Note 8 flies without hiccup. I'm giving the Pixel 2 XL a try now but would definitely jump on the Essential phone over the Pixel and Note 8 due to stock android and quick update so far. But that camera... hmm. I may have to give it another try in a month or so to see if it's any better.

I just got shipping confirmation from Amazon... says delivery on Wednesday?
From the US? Wednesday?
Delivery from the USA to the UK on Wednesday?
o_Oo_Oo_O

Is that even possible?!
I can order something over here and not get delivery that quick! Doubt it'll be that speedy!

Ok, so want a new phone coming from my current Nexus 6P, which I love, but battery issues, and the speakers have gotten bad, so need a new phone in the next month or so. I originally liked the Pixel 2 XL, but for $950 for the 128GB version, I find that outrageous, especially with the poor bad displays most are shipping with, and news today they are failing Quality Control tests from Google too now. I paid $499 for my 64GB Nexus 6P brand new from Google, to me the Pixel 2 XL is what a Nexus 8P could have been, and would have priced like $599 or so. Out of principle I won't give Google the cash for a Pixel. But let's not go there with this discussion.

- Essential @ $499 ( root and ROM's supposedly should start coming in November )

- OnePlus 5T @ ? $550 ? ( 6" display, fingerprint scanner on the rear, 18:9 aspect ratio. Officially announcement due soon )

I want a stock Android type OS, with good battery life, that will get me 6h Screen On time or more. I want a bright display, and smooth OS. I always root my phones, and maybe a custom ROM too. And I want the price under $600. So Essential or OnePlus 5T ?

You can probably guess my answer, but yeah I think you would like the essential phone, especially after the custom roms start popping up. Only concern for your use case I would think is that because of the low volume of sales, there might not be many custom roms made for it.

You can always head out to Best Buy and pick one up. If you don’t like it simply return it to the store, where as the One Plus will be harder to get and return. Plus at $499 I think it’s it a great deal.

I really liked the software experience I had with the OnePlus 5. I really like Oxygen OS. It's stock android but some customizing you can do to it out of the box (reminds me of custom roms like Pure Nexus, etc. but maybe not as many customizing options). Plus, if you do want to ROM it, the development community on XDA is pretty well established. The camera on the 5T should be a bit better than the essential phone but you can get by with the essential phone ok. I just don't trust OnePlus as a company right now due to their collection of some pretty private data without the ability to opt out.

Little worried buying one from Best Buy, scared it may be old original manufactured units, and the ones bought directly from Essential themselves would be newer manufactured phones, with fixes ?

The only fix that I know of is that earlier units shipped with a fabric earpiece that developed holes and was replace by a metal mesh in newer models.

Not sure what version they're more likely to carry. I know Best Buy got them later than Amazon or Sprint and my model is a bit better put together than my original preorder from Essential, but my it still has the fabric earpiece instead of the metal from new batches.

Main reason I say Best Buy is because it's alot easier to return if you don't want it. And if it is one with a fabric earpiece, you can always call essential and request a warrantee exchange. That's what I plan on doing in a couple months.

My tracking has come through and my delivery is estimated Thursday.
I thought Wedensday was too soon. And too good to be true seeing as I'm off Wednesdays! :p

Currently it has departed Cincinnati at 6:30 this morning.
It has been in California then to San Francisco then to Cincy.

I LOVE tracking info. :D

Bless my Essential on it's journey to little old Cheshire in UK. :)

Half an hour after my last post, the Essential touched down in Blighty!
East Midlands - UK (to be precise!)

Not sure how it got there that quick o_O as it departed the Cincinatti facility at 6:30am and got to uk at 12:37pm?
Maybe Essential phones grow wings and fly themselves? :D.

Wonder where it's off to next?!

Stay tuned folks, for the next episode of Aneres Essential Travel Update! ;)

Huh? To my knowledge there haven't been any hardware changes to the phone since release.

Only thing I've read is the speaker grill thing was originally fabric but has been replaced with metal in newer black and the new white models.
