that's still what's holding me back from re-ordering. I'd love to have it if it wasn't for the camera. The google camera goes a long way on quality but my main issue was shutter speed. I have a 2 year old and twins on the way. My excitement for the Pixel is that no matter what the situation, I'm pretty much going to get a great pic of my kiddos, with them constantly moving or not (always the former ;) ).

What did sleep do to make you so mad ;)

Glad I didn't pull the trigger last week while in the US with the price drop yesterday. Turns out I am headed down there next week as well.
My back and forth was documented weeks ago earlier in the thread but now with a price drop which equals to about $650 Cdn vs $1030 that the only Canadian carrier is charging, its less of an issue.
That said, a few things. I tried out a Note 8 for almost two weeks and really liked it and made the size work. A step above, to no suprise, my Note 5 in every way. FP sensor position I was used to and facial recognition worked and got better each day. Alcantara case is just fantastic too.

But the outright price here is $1299, just $20 less than the IPhone X. So that's the main reason it went back, but. I could certainly make it work more than I thought before I tried it in real situations.

Now issues with the Pixel 2 it seems, and the V30 which just became available to Canada. And continued commitment by Essential leans me back to this, with the size and price drop, half the price of the Note 8.

So now my question. I assume Amazon orders have 30d return? I can order the Essential with my Prime account and have it delivered to NYC where we will be next week and save shipping. If I don't feel it, easier to return omce I get back here via Amazon than Bestbuy USA since I'm an 8h drive from any US BB stores. Or do I deal with Essential if I want to return it?

IPhone X is right around the corner and almost identical dimensions to Essential with the Ip8 power and Ip8+ camera and Oled, so we will see what happens. And the Note 8 in the mix, as well my Note 5 running strong too. Decisions.

I hear what you're saying re price of devices and choice.

For me, the biggest thing was the price.
The Essential was £390 ish (minus custom fees) which was just a bargain really compared to other devices.

Sure, the Pixel is likely the better device in terms of specs, camera etc, but I am not really struck on the design, there's some potential issues with the screen, and the smaller one is pretty dated though that isn't too much of an issue to me.

The iPhone X is just flat out overpriced. I'd happily have an X, but I just do not have that kind of money spare, nor do I really want to pay that amount for something I know i'll likely get bored of after a month.

Essential is at a great price point now, and there's clearly no question the hardware is top notch. It's the other bits that need to catch up, but this time in a month or two they could have ironed out a lot of the niggling bits, and if they do it'll be an even better investment at $499.

Yeah, the essential is missing some features (only splash proof, no micro SD, no wireless charging, ok camera, no ois, no telephoto lens) but more than makes up for it in design, feel, and performance IMO.

And at this price it's a much better deal. I love how compact it is while still having a large screen (just slightly narrower than my Note 5 screen). And performance has been great.

I'm at 4 hrs screen time with 27% battery left. I'll post again tonight when it's lower.

Rubin Essential... It sounds like something from Assassin's Creed game. You don't go out to buy a Rubin Essential. You embark on a quest to find it. :D:D:D

So tracking slowed down last night and there were no updates for a while. Woke up this morning to a text to say your parcel is out for delivery by end of day!

Checked the tracking and it's had another little journey from East Midlands to Birmingham and now it's on its final journey from there to me!

Strange, as normally our delivery depots come from Stoke which is nearer, but DHL are delivering it so there we have it.

If it is Birmingham, then it won't be here til much later, as it's about an hour and a half away! It's being delivered to my mum's as no one recognises my new address yet. I bought a new build house on a new housing development that was a field this time last year :p so I thought best to put my mum's address in!

What amazing service from Amazon US and DHL. (Providing it safely gets here of course :)).

Buy a compact battery charger if life is a major concern, big batteries just weigh down a smartphone.

I picked up the Anker long ago, charge it and carry it around with me if I know it will be a heavy usage day on my phone. Weighs nothing and it is the size of a lipstick tube.

It is grand larceny for me at $499 as far as I am concerned. There are no NEW smartphones currently that can compete with this for the buck.

Depends on your parameters. For example, you can get an S8 right now for cheaper at Best Buy on Verizon (or on AT&T for only a bit more).

Ok.

Not been long, but I'm nearly all set up so can give a very brief first impression.

Arrived safe and sound - wasn't particularly well packaged, which concerned me, but all ok. :)
Took it out the box and the feel is just incredible. The ceramic back feels great and there's a really nice weight and heft to it.

Set up was fairly quick, I set up as new as I needed a clear out of my XZ Premium which I hadn't got round to, so thought I'd go from scratch.
Screen is decent. Nothing will compare to my XZ Premium, and it doesn't, but it's still very serviceable and looks good to my eyes.

I downloaded the Google camera straight away after set up and then had to head out with the dog.
Camera seems good to me so far, (the Google one). Some pictures shot in HDR were a little sluggish to capture, and I have to say I do like the camera layout of the Essential camera app, but there's definitely an improvement on the Google one.

See some quick snaps of the dog below.
Pretty decent?

And these are just taken in fading light indoors. Top is Google camera, bottom is Essential.
Not a great test I know, but I'll do more soon.

Early impressions are good - not blown away.
There are some very noticeable issues straight away. I have a 4g mobile broadband dongle currently as I have just moved into a new house on a new housing development and there is no broadband here yet. We're all being messed around by the providers, but my point is, the 4g broadband I'm using is decent enough but the Essential drops signal when connected to it when I move rooms. Going from the living room (where the 4g box is) to the kitchen - it completely drops. My XZ Premium is on and connected and that barely flickers.

In the living room currently and the XZ Premium has full signal to the box, the Essential is missing a few bars.
I know a couple of people have mentioned this online and in other forums potentially, but I have noticed it first hand and it is a little concerning. Particularly when my house is three storey and the master bedroom is on the top floor. If it disconnects on the same floor in the kitchen then god help it two floors above. Again, my XZ Premium stays connected pretty strongly.

Another thing - the display size. I don't mean the size in inches, I mean the on screen size. Everything seems tiny. Text is very small, images like apps are a bit smaller. I have changed the display size from 'default' to large, but it takes it too large and it doesn't look great. That's something I guess I'll have to get used to or settle on.

One thing I do like is how I can use the phone with one hand. I haven't been able to do that since the iPhone 6?
KEYone was one-handable, but it was difficult to use the keypad with one hand. This is a really nice change for me!

The phone obviously looks gorgeous, and the bezel-less look is where the future is it would seem. However I'm not sure if that's something I'm hugely struck on. Aesthetically, it's fantastic, but in every day use I find it a little awkward. I felt the same when I tried the S8.
I know my XZ Premium has huuuuge bezels, but the phone is so comfortable despite being noticeably larger.
Function over form is sometimes where it should be.

Tricky one so far.

There is lots to like, but there are some problems. The connectivity seems to be a problem at the moment and it is slightly worrying.
I do like that there is a glance display though, really like that.
And you only have to pick the phone up to get your glance screen, which shows all notifications. Pretty sweet. My XZ Premium is sorely lacking that.

I'll spend more time with it in real world use and post back with my findings.
It's quite telling though, that I pick my XZ Premium up after using the Essential for a bit and don't think "omg this is so dated". It's the opposite. Like a comfy pair of slippers haha.
Maybe spending the day in work with it tomorrow will help me form a better opinion. :)
