Coming back to my essential phone for a bit, and man this design still just feels and looks great, especially with Android 9. It's such a shame that the essential phone 2 was cancelled, hopefully they get bought and are able to do a follow-up

How awesome if Samsung buys them out? How awesome would an essential designed phone with Samsung engineering be? Oraybe Google, but after what Google has done with HTC and Motorola, maybe not.

I wish Rubin had stayed and helped direct the Pixel.

"... an Essential Phone 2 might be happening. Let’s not get too excited, though."

"This phone “isn’t like a standard smartphone,” and will instead feature a small screen that you interact with via voice. The phone is an AI phone (of course) that can respond to emails, book appointments, and send text messages on its own.

This new phone is said to be quite different than what we think of as a phone and could be used to complement your current phone rather than replace it. You know Google’s big Digital Wellbeing push? This phone, like Digital Wellbeing, wants you to step away more."

hmmm. I wish they'd just build a second gen follow-up to the PH-1 with the stuff fixed from gen 1 but same form factor (maybe AMOLED screen?) as PH-1.

Humm, not sure about that.

I'm with you, I would love a real follow up to the Essential 1, one with the same design but no chin, shorter notch, better cameras, wireless charging, waterproofing, 256gb, improved display, 6-8gb ram, SD845 (or 855 if possible), and stereo speakers.

Would also like an official at&t model simply because I need wifi calling, or maybe at&t will finally lift that restriction, but I doubt it.

Thirded. This was the only Android phone I was considering as a replacement for my 7+.

Not wanting a AI companion to my main phone.

A shame, re Essential 2, but for me personally, there were too many shortcomings in the first phone and I never saw them all being fixed in a follow up.

With Google's Pixel phones getting better and better every year, and this years leaks suggesting it will be a big push forward, my Android attention will purely be on them as it looks set to be a must have.

Good grief man, is this really the article you meant to post!?
That was a rough read regarding Andy’s scandalous ways.
Yup, that's a rough article and why I feel the company is done for now. It's a shame, would've loved an updated Essential 2 with better camera, better carrier support, waterproofing, and smaller chin.

That was before it came out that he might have been involved in a sex ring operation. He will be hard pressed to find any investors now, not mention the fall out from employees, I believe their top designer is a women, you really think she sticks around if Rubin is doing those things?

Yeah, doubt he’ll get anymore investors at this point, if anything, he is probably trying to keep investors as we speak.

The story about his possible sex ring/ownership of women was released last October. I thought at the time that surely he would vanish, but it never happened.

One specific line in the story that broke last year was, “You will be happy being taken care of,” he wrote. “Being owned is kinda like you are my property, and I can loan you to other people.”

I remember thinking there is no way this will be found acceptable. No one will want to be associated with him.

Well, here’s some good news for anyone who wants to rock the essential phone on AT&T, looks like WiFi calling is now working. I am running Android q beta.

Android 10 just dropped. Will say I've been impressed with how quickly they been dropping software updates, though I'm expecting that soon to dry up now that it's been 2 years since the phone was released. At least with Android 10, most of the updates will come from the Play store, keeping this phone as a useful backup for years to come.

I've sold off my Essential PH-1 at least a year ago, maybe longer! Continually impressed at how fast they've been with updates, security and major OS updates. Awesome to see 10 already running on the PH-1. If it wasn't for the weird little issues I had with it, I'd still be using it. The PH-1 was the best built phone that I've ever used, hands down. I hope we see a new product from them here soon!

Can’t post it right now, but Rubin just posted pics of the new Essential phone on twitter. It looks like you cut a normal phone in half vertically. It’s really tall and skinny with a custom android UI to fit. I’m not sure what they’re going for but it’s definitely a unique form factor.

Yep, I don’t know why they think this is what people want. Unless they have something up their sleeve, I don’t understand this.
Maybe it’s dirt cheap with them saving so much on screen and battery size? I don’t know.
