And that’s ok too if it floats your boat.

I know you need to tell yourself something to justify dropping the money on one but let’s get serious. This phone did lots of stuff “ok” none of the stuff they said was out of the ballpark was. The camera is and continues to be crap even after subsequent updates. The UI is buggy. The 360 camera is a gimmick. Even after poor reviews, being priced too high and the company literally dying you still expect me to all of a sudden go “oh of COURSE, this handset is essential to my life”

Now it’s a moot point, Rubin missed the mark big time.

Oh boy, here we go with the lazy and predictable “need to justify” something. Should have known you’d go there since, god forbid, someone actually like this phone.

I paid 144 brand new for the phone. I have nothing to justify. Other than to be thrilled To get the best deal on a flagship-spec Android phone at the time. I’m just enjoying the phone and nothing that has been announced over the last few weeks changes that. For some reason you think it has.

As for the camera (more than fine) and software (8.1 Oreo has bugs overall), you clearly have never touched the phone, then or now.

None of it’s moot. The phone has and will continue to function as intended. And I’ll be using it until Apple designs a phone to suit my needs.

Enjoy whatever it is you enjoy. You seem like a fun guy with all the smugness and anger.

I’m calling it a thread. Clearly we disagree.

Curious how the Essential phone is holding up for users ? I don't really plan to get one, but I do think it's a very unique Android phone, and too bad it never was a big winner.

I think as far as notch phones go, the way Essential did it was near perfect, and I'm surprised Android manufacturers didn't copy this notch, as opposed to copying the larger iPhone X notch.

And hasn't the Essential team been good on timely updates now ? And even have a Android P beta out for it ?

I suppose if I could find one cheap, I'd get it for my Wife and ditch the LG G6.

I just got a replacement for mine, the earpiece came out. The design is still beautiful, and right now I have Android p running on it.

The S9 is my daily driver (along with my iPhone X), but my wife is using it right now and she loves it.

I’ve thought of buying a 2nd one to try P.

My Mate 9 was nice. But wide to point was a little too much.

The iPhone X is my main phone and the Essential is close to it in size but weighs more than X.

It works out at £250 virtually for me in UK and I'm half tempted.
But I remember the vibration fromm the nav buttons being the worst I've ever used in a phone and the camera was pretty bad.

Has the camera improved any?

Sorry but I really cannot help with that as I really don’t use the camera on a smartphone.

It is returnable so if even partially on the fence just get it at this price and decide later.

For $249 you can't find any other phone brand new close to this one sure might have its issues in a funky camera and not the best display but again for an ear Flagship device relief last year no other phone cells for $249 right now

Guess I missed yet another sale of this phone! 3rd party seller at 480 for the white one. Oh well I suppose I didn't need it anyway.

So...what are the chances of an essential phone 2.

Really can't say. Maybe. But not anytime soon. I would guess Spring 2019 the earliest, if it even comes.

They should go the OnePlus route, make a flagship type phone in the $500 range. Stock Android and their unique build and design. They could take the old Nexus nich

Essential is rolling out the final version of Android P (9.0 / Pie) today! They've been killing it with the speed of the updates recently.

So, I picked up this phone while it's cheap on Amazon and it arrived today. I got the Halo Gray color variant. I'm sure by now my thoughts won't be much different than what's been said before but my initial reactions are: Damn this phone is beautifully constructed and the screen is gorgeous and easily one of the best Android displays I've ever seen. There's something about LCD screens that I love. They seem to have a certain clarity that OLED just doesn't have (again, to my eyes).

Im probably going to flood this thread with my thoughts about the phone randomly so fair warning, but, to be honest I find the display on this phone even more immersive than my iPhone X. Not that display quality is better but that the tiny bezels make the display feel like it's on the surface of the phone. It's nice. I stand by this being my favorite display on an Android phone I've ever seen.

You should be able to get great audio especially if you use Tidal.

I did see that, but I'm a devoted Spotify user because it's discovery features. Thank you for the tip though.

More random thoughts, I like the haptics on this phone better than pretty much any Android phone I've ever used. Could be the Pie update (I believe they changed some vibrate functions on it) but it closely resembles the haptics on the iPhone. Not quite as good, but definitely good enough. The build quality of this phone is absolutely impeccable, and I find it easier to hold naked vs the iPhone, and that's probably due to its slab design vs the iPhone which is a completely curved design.

Touch ID on the back is soooooo nice. Easily my preferred method. Face ID is fine, but it's so spotty and I don't buy into ML making it better over time. I'll take Touch ID on the back of the phone any day thank you very much.

Battery seems to be good thus far, maybe a little better than the X, which is generally good enough for my uses. Still too early to really assess it though. Also, I don't know if its the ceramic or what, but the phone is staying cool even under more intensive tasks.

How this phone is currently selling for only $329 is beyond me. I mean I know why it is and the history of it that led to that price, but I definitely am not seeing $650 value difference between the PH-1 and my X. Not even close to seeing it.

I had just RMA'd my third Pixel 2 XL and the iPhone X was intriguing to me, so I bought one from Swappa at the beginning of the year. I loved the hardware and build quality of the iPhone X. But, as I've learned through past experiences (I never learn) with the iPhone and iOS, I just can't do iOS. So I sold the iPhone X and decided to try out the Essential PH-1. I was hesitant and expecting to sell it pretty quickly, to say the least, especially due to the insane amount of bad and negative reviews. I was (and still am) pleasantly surprised.

Along the lines of what you've said, I appreciate the fact it has a fingerprint scanner, I love the build quality (titanium and ceramic, what a combination), and the fact that we're getting updates (Pie rolled out a few hours before the Pixel!) at the same speed as the Pixel... Worth it. The camera isn't the best but it's passable with the GCam APK. I'm in love. I'm still considering the Pixel 3 / 3 XL when it comes out, but if that isn't good for whatever reason, I'll keep the Essential. I'm that happy with it.

On the topic of bad reviews and backlash, I feel privileged to be coming in after all of that. I feel like I have a device that has fully matured through Essential's tender love and care to it, and while the camera still lacks (but has vastly improved from everything I've seen/read) I'm not a big camera guy so that I can live with just fine. So far, I'm loving this device. Two most important things to me on a phone are build quality and screen quality hands down. This phone ticks both boxes with flying colors.

This is a niche product, but I think that has served it well. They've been able to listen to the voices of their users and deliver a terrific end product at a ridiculously low price for the quality. Again, I feel privileged to be in my position.
