I can confirm that the popping is fixed in Firefox youtube on all videos I've tried. Closing the screen does not trigger popping. No matter what the rep said the performance between 10.15.1 and 10.15.2 is so drastic it must have been a fix

I can confirm the is popping issue is not fixed. It may be removed or less audible in Youtube, but it's audible in video editing and audio software.

Maybe, but 10.15.2 certainly mitigated it heavily. It is probably the first of many updates.

People who get defensive and want to change subject. All these complaints are for your benefit. Nobody be like this guy...

The problem isn't that you are complaining. The problem is that you are just insisting that this will never be fixed or mitigated (even though the recent update helped significantly) and call everyone who disagrees with you a brainwashed zealot. Get over yourself.

I am buying the base 16" for $2,150.

Has Apple released a software update addressing "cracking/popping sound"?

In all fairness, this thread has degraded (as they all seem to do) to a terrible signal-to-noise ratio.

I did a fresh reinstall of Catalina for an unrelated reason and it seems like the problem got worse in safari but is still fixed in iTunes and Firefox. Not sure whether to downgrade to 10.15.1 again

Another edit: Changing the speaker to 96khz in Audio Midi Setup fixed it in safari once again. I hope 10.15.3 fixes it permanently. is there any reason keeping the speaker on 96khz is bad?

Just ordered a new 16" and it just shipped today. I will see if they preformed any repairs in the newer production models.

This is probably a software/firmware issue related to power management by the T2 chip. I started noticing it on my iPhone since people started talking about it on the MacBook Pro 16 in.

Just got my new custom ordered 16" three days ago and there is zero cracking/popping in YouTube and Final Cut. They might have fixed it on a hardware level?

It certainly improved with 10.5.2 but occasionally still happens in Safari and Firefox with Amazon Music and Youtube. I have a repeatable scenario and Apple Support suggested a I do OS re-install. Before I go through it, it would be nice to know if others can reproduce with these steps:

1. Launch YouTube on Safari
2. Please play this SPECIFIC song (during first 30 sec):
3. Minimize Safari and launch Photos or Apple Mail
4. CMND + Tab to scroll through apps (scroll through app by hitting Tab a few time until you land on Safari)
5. Ht CMND + Q to quit safari (must be from app switcher while it hovers over Photos or Apple Mail)
6. You should hear a popping sound.

I did a reinstall because I deleted some system files when cleaning out my laptop after a migration assistant and that seemed to make the problem worse in Safari. Putting the audio midi on 96khz made the issue way better than it was after the reinstall and even a little less poppy than after my update from the box to 10.15.2. If you do a reinstall I recommend using internet recovery mode not regular recovery. I’m going to do that before school starts to see if it fixes anything. Other than that the laptop is great.

I found a fix for this:

Or run this in a terminal:
sudo kill -9 $(ps axc|awk "{if (\$5==\"coreaudiod\") print \$1}");

That will restart the audio service and solves the issue.

Does this work even when on 44Khz?

Any one test if Beta 2 macOS Catalina 10.15.3 Beta 2 has fixed the speaker popping issue?

Has anyone noticed a popping sound when changing the volume and listening to music, YouTube videos, etc. When I change the volume with the chime feedback on, it creates a popping noise overtop of the music. However, the volume chime doesn’t create the popping sound when nothing else is playing. I’m not sure if it’s just the combination of the volume chime and music or the speakers themselves. I do not hear the popping noise if I connect headphones to the machine.

That's great! If you don't mind can you test out this scenario? :
1. Launch YouTube on Safari
2. Please play this SPECIFIC song (during first 30 sec):

3. Minimize Safari and launch Photos or Apple Mail
4. CMND + Tab to scroll through apps (scroll through app by hitting Tab a few time until you land on Safari)

What version of Catalina did you have when the popping persisted in YouTube? Curious to know if they have an absolute fix rather than mixed reports from users on previous updates. Cheers.
