I must say I’m not super happy with the display on my 11 Pro Max. Yellow and dingy. I’ve tried to get used to it, but it doesn’t feel right for such an expensive device.

Why does it look great with True Tone disabled? Chance this could be fixed via software?
True Tone tries to match to the ambient lighting, and the real world isn’t super blue. The sun is yellow after all :D

Just came back from Best Buy, where I compared my Xs to the one Pro and one Pro Max they had.

Night shift off, TrueTone off, auto brightness off, reduce whitepoint off, all on max brightness. Pulled up a plain white page on all three. Brightness seemed completely identical on all three, and both the Pro/Pro Max were yellower than mine, so there's another data point. Disappointing to see that - they can't possibly keep getting yellower and yellower every. single. year.

When has the warming of the displays simply gone too far? The Xs was supposed to be the holy grail 6500K whitepoint supposedly, which IMO was already too yellow. And now we are going yellower again? Lots of people saying their Pro/Pro Max is yellower.

The issue start when you start either comparing your screen with a previous iPhone or in store or start reading this kind of thread ?

Exactly. Honestly, people get so out of control about displays and comparing them. If you want to find an issue with something, you will find it.

In all my years of apple products I have never ever had an issue with the screen or color of the screen. I’ve been using my Pro Max since Friday and just pulled up my iPad Pro 2018 to come onto the forums. Yes, the screens are different. The iPad is bluer and has a more vivid white than the Pro Max, and the Pro Max is brighter. They are different. That’s ok. I prefer the iPad screen, but there’s nothing wrong with the Pro Max screen. I just prefer bluer hues.

I think most of you wouldn’t have an issues if you stopped reading threads like this, stopped comparing your screen to other screens, and just used your device.

I can say 100% that without even comparing the pro display to my Xs I knew it was more yellow in colour, comparing it to my Xs just confirmed this, straight out of the box unnoticed it. I think it is only right people are happy with such an important component of the phone when they are shelling out such large sums of money. Even looking at the display models in the shop I could see they were more yellow in appearance. If this was an intentional feature by Apple to warm these displays then surely others on this forum wouldn’t have crisp white displays.

I personally think these are first run model flaws. My intention is to give it a month or two, let any production issues be repaired then try again!

I can agree with your point, but personally, and I wouldn't doubt others feel/experience the same, it's hard for me to get used to the yellower screen of the phone when my other devices are all on the cooler side (iPad Pro, MacBook Pro and even the Apple Watch). When I use one of those and then go to the phone, it's super apparent the shift in color. Obviously screens won't be exactly the same between product lines but my iPad Pro and MacBook Pro are both cool and I don't easily see the difference between them, especially just when using them as normal. But yeah, when I then go to pick up the phone, it's like wow...that's "yellow!"

It really does seem to happen every year, I totally buy into the "first batch" being an issue. Last year I went through about 3 or 4 XS Maxes before I just gave up (plus I started getting 'tude at the Apple Store, which, I can't say I blame them either, BUT as others have said when I spend THIS much money on a product, I do expect it to live up to my expectations). I went to the XR and although that was a "first batch" phone, the LCD was nice and cool to my liking. Months later I was missing the OLED and higher res so I sold my XR and picked up another XS Max. Screen was perfectly cool. That's just my experience of course.

Are "most" consumers going to notice this? Probably not. But being an Apple/tech enthusiast forum, it's not shocking to see so many complaints about this. We are the type of people to notice this kind of thing lol.

Just measured my 11 Pro and XS with a colorimeter. 11 Pro is 6500K with 610 nits max brightness. XS is 6800K with 575 nits max brightness. So I guess the 11 pro is actually more accurate even if it looks more yellow.

How do you measure your iPhone's color temperature? I have the i1Display Pro.

I have the X which is whiter than white. It's bizarre to me that people are comparing the new 11 Pro to the XS as every XS and XS Max that i've seen in the stores have been more yellow compared to my X.

I read about these screen issues every year on MacRumours and I got to say that i'm horrified. How can Apple QC be so bloo*y appalling?

I'm always worried to buy a new Apple product now as their QC seems really lax.
I hope that you all get better screens over the next few weeks / months.

PS My iPad Pro 11 screen is yellow compared to my X. You can really see how much better the OLED screen is when placed side by side.

did you try disabling auto brightness and compare both ? I noticed similar fullness but once I disabled auto brightness it really popped out for same level of brightness with True Tone on!
Also I noticed that the depending on ambience light my display shows little warmer and in bright outdoor it’s less warmer.

I will try that later tonight, but I feel like that won’t change a thing.

Apple has never tweaked the True Tone calibration via updates before as far as I’m aware.

Chill lol, you don’t even need to compare two iPhones to notice how yellow the display is, especially with True Tone. If the display is yellow to begin with, True Tone will make it even worse. That’s why it’s best to have a perfect white point.

A lot of these iPhone 11 Pro models have too much yellow on the display.

That really, really sucks.

I should note that until my Xs, I had actually never needed to exchange a phone, having 6 prior iPhones going as far back as the 3G. But for my Xs, I had to exchange until the 4th one was finally acceptable. No joke, there are times, well after purchasing and examining and sweating it, where I'll be out at a restaurant or whatever waiting for my food and I pull out my phone and actually notice consciously that the whites are noticeably yellow.

That's insane to be noticing it outright when not comparing and not being in the mindset of looking for it and being well past any mental adjustment period. That said, I went to the store numerous times with #4 when I was still in the return window, and sadly, mine was one of if not the best one I saw of all the Xs/Xs Max display models (probably looked at 12-15), which made me feel better and like I got the best that was on offer with the Xs. But even still, with one of the better ones, it's visibly yellow at times when not even looking for it. Looking at those 11 Pros today, I was just shocked.

That said, at other times I can look at my Xs and understand how someone might really like this soft white, how natural and accurate it probably is in reality. Really, I can see that at times and sometimes it looks nice. But most of the time, I just want it cooler.

I should also note I'm an extreme case - I use a plain white background with nothing on it, and have all my apps in a single row of four folders at the top, so if anyone is conscious and judgmental of white quality, it's me.

Is it possible for folks to post pictures when comparing two phones and when we say it’s yellow than the other? My pro max is but warm too compared to my xs max but I don’t think I am going to return it for now. But at same time also would like to see comparison pics so to see how much warmer are we talking about if possible?

Thanks

I can report some behavior from one of my Apple stores. After showing the screens such as the below with white debris under the glass or the screens being uneven on gray the store management said that if I bought two replacement devices I needed to inspect them in front of them before leaving to ensure I’m perfectly happy with them and if there was any issue and they could not see it they would refuse to return them. Attached are photos of what was the issue and store management indicated they could not see them. Very disappointed after driving 40 min each way. Needless to say I did not buy them in the event they would claim they cannot see anything given they already couldn’t see what is pictured below. This stuff really irritates me.

Screw them then. You bought two and were attempting to do a first exchange on them and the store acted like that? I could see if you were a serial returner on #s 11 and 12 or something. I would've done the same, returned the two you had and told them to get bent. They can't really refuse your return anyway, you have a right to the 14 day NO QUESTIONS ASKED return policy.

Honestly, I'd email Tim Cook and report your experience. That's asinine and you should not have been treated that way.

Had this issue tonight and just played around with the settings.

Still have my iPhone X so I had something to compare it to.

Initially, my phone looked very dull next to my iPhone X (max brightness, no two tone)

Here's what I did:

followed these instructions. Then I noticed once I set everything back to default (The instructions overcorrect the issue imo), my iPhone 11P was looking much better, especially next to my iPhone X.

I dont know what happened, but I'm happy with how it looks

Got X with uniform bluish screen and was pushing back upgrade mostly to avoid screen lottery. Not going to take chances on 2019 models but already thinking I should avoid launch wave of 2020 Iphones. For many years I watched Apple logo on initial boot with bated breath, to see how yellow it is.

That said, color filters help A LOT to improve color temperature. Since Apple released them, I did not need to jailbreak anymore.

So annoying my 11 pro max has the left side brighter and a yellow tint my mates new one is beautiful full white, I always have bad luck this ruins every iPhone for me
I thought I was the only one noticing it. I checked a bunch of store pro models and most of them are slightly brighter on the left side and darker on the right side.

would like the screen LESS WARM. halve to go into Apple tomorrow and take a look at some of the display models to see if any of of them look any better
It’s really a shame that the quality control isn’t better

ill likely send an email to them tomorrow and cc the pictures. In situations like this I’m willing to take the time, money, and gas to attempt to get working devices in the interest of personal interest and enjoyment while I understand no company likes to take returns back.
But yes, the way they handled this was poor and coming off the first devices seems reasonable. Now if I’d gone through one or even two more sets of replacements, I think it’s fair to say you stop buying for a while and let production normalize or come to the conclusion quality control isn’t up to the customers standards and perhaps this may not be the brand for you anymore.
But this store is in a ritzy part of town and they routinely feel the need to throw their weight around like they are doing you a favor.
It’s harder to be humble, but it definitely goes a lot further than when you expect something rather than tout yourself as above other as the management in this particular store did.

The good screens will return after 4-6 weeks, and in the meantime you will see those display phones swapped for premier samples within the next week. Just wait and see.
I worked at Apple for 4 1/2 years and I can tell you that I’ve never seen a backstage specialist replace display phones unless they were broken or stolen.

Can you tell us anything to why stores are difficult as described above in my case? I’m guessing weekend numbers being impacted. But that’s only an educated guess. By phone most interactions are positive. There seems to be some other variable at play when retail is introduced into it.
