So I have the correct cable now and posting this from the LG 27UD88-W using scaled 1440p. I have to say, at a viewing distance of 60cm it's great. It will take a little getting used to all this space, coming from the best for display on my 15" MBP.

Sure it's not as crisp as best for display but at a comfortable viewing distance it's perfectly comfortable.

Yeah that's pretty much it. It's not 100% perfect quality, but for 90% at just £500 I'll take it. I'd recommend it to anyone.

FWIW, mine is sharper in Windows than macOS, so hopefully future software updates will improve scaling algorithm.

Yes, I think we can all agree that 4k at 1440p scaled on 27" is a huge improvement over anything regular 1440p and looks pretty good!
Still when you go to 5k, it's another dimension :D

I'm testing out 1080p today. It's big, but it is a lot more comfortable to read.

I found that depending on what apps you use, you can scale the fonts to a reasonable size. I mean you can change to dock, the system icons on the desktop, the fonts in safari, the zoom in pages etc. but it's not for me since I use a lot of adobe apps.

What about getting the 4K monitor for the MacBook and PS4, but keep the 1080p for your PC?

I'd imagine gaming in 4K on the PS4 would be quite a nice upgrade. Battlefield 1 at ultra settings in 4K on my PC is staggeringly impressive.

Well I got the LG 2768P. I didn't need the USB C port yet, maybe never. It is brilliant, better than I imagined.

Scaling at 1440p not a problem from my MacBook Air (2015) even at the full 4K I like it. My PC at 4K is brilliant, enlarged text at 150%. PS4 Pro is what you would expect, 4K goodness.

The bonus was, I have a 2010 Mac Mini running Snow Leopard. I keep it for one particular legacy graphics program. (I run it in Parallels on my Air but it is faster native on the Mini) Everywhere I read, the graphics were maximum 2560 x 1600 which is why I read this thread. It is outputting 4K (probably only at 24/30hz) but it perfect for what I need.

Thanks for the help I have had on here.

Anyone with the 27UD88 noticed this defect in the top left and to right corners? Looks like a dot and the black is affected.

[doublepost=1485615132][/doublepost]Also noticed a nick on the bezel and the left side has poor finish. I'm debating if all these things combined are enough for me to return it.

It's going back. RMA raised.
The build quality isn't there for a £500 monitor.

Does yours also have the black that's come away at the edge near the dots?

The dot I can live with. It's the rest of the issues. Shouldn't be there on a £500 monitor.

Monitor has been boxed up and ready to go back.

Couple things I didn't like about it.
1. Base was wobbly.
2. The anti reflective coating made the screen quite grainy.
3. The brightness looked poor next to my MBP.
4. Sleep/Wake issues.

Sorry to hear you didn't like it.

Can't say I have any of those issues with my UD88. I actually had to turn down the brightness on mine. #4 is not a monitor issue - that's a known macOS bug.

I was extremely impressed by the screen quality and simplicity for a product I considered to be "cheap". Sounds like you had different expectations and wouldn't consider it "cheap". A simple difference in opinion!

Personally, I'd want one of the new Ultrafine monitors. 1080p retina on a 21" or 1440p retina on a 27" - perfect. Unfortunately, my year old 15" MBP cannot drive these. The 21" 1080p would be ideal, but it's USB-C only. I do wonder if we will see any smaller size 4k monitors. I can only find 23.6" 4k monitors which again will be a tad big for retina.

You seem to be pretty much like me in the area of looking for something that is perfect and made with perfection. Personally if I seen the things you've spotted on yours I too would also be returning it. Also I'm currently pending delivery of mine that I just ordered so we'll see if I notice any kind of imperfections much like what you've seen with yours and I'll also be looking for other imperfections as well. Hopefully things work out on my part as I've already been through around 4 different monitors this month.

First was an Asus monitor, then the others were HP monitors, and the HP and Asus monitors IMO did have some imperfections which I wasn't happy about, with the Asus it was "gap gate" issues near the bezels at the lower corners of the monitor (this issue is due to the overall design I would say) regardless I wasn't happy. As for the HP monitors it was also some minor miss-hap of perfection issues and also sleep / wake problems. I'd set the monitor to go off after 3 minutes (do it with all my monitors to prevent image retention) and when it would go off after 3 minutes the monitor would turn back on for no reason. Then after another 3 minutes passed the monitor would then turn back off and remain off.

The above being said hopefully that sleep / wake issue I mentioned with the HP monitors isn't an issue with these LG monitors as I was planning to pickup another one if I found these to be okay and to my liking of quality but if it isn't I can see myself moving onto trying another brand yet again. I also wish manufacturers would stop with all that (widescreen and curved screen crap) personally they just look awkward IMO. I also wish a manufacture would produce a glass monitor like previous Apple displays but sadly I don't think we'll ever see it happening, even in 2017 which I also thought would be the year we see bezel electronic devices. I guess more hope in the year 2020 maybe?

We've already established that some of these 'imperfections' are by design (or at least out of necessity), so I think you'll be disappointed @intz2nu.

No other company has brand affinity as strong as Apple, so they cannot charge equivalent prices for products. Therefore, they are stuck in a lower-end market. Unfortunately this comes with weaker QA. Just a symptom of a wildly successful tech company dominating the market, and that company happens to be Apple.

Okay so I as promised I would give ya'll a heads up once I received mine in the mail. Well it showed up early yesterday. I unpacked it and looked everything over in bright lighting and all I can say is that the unit that I received is in 100% perfect condition, very minimal backlight bleed but the overall quality of the unit I got is spotless and free from any kind of nicks, scuff marks, or scratches anywhere on it. After having been through 4 different monitors in just a month's time I'm extremely happy and pleased with this monitor and the quality of it, especially for the price point. Very nice picture and I do scale things down a bit when doing anything text related due to the 4K resolution and how small text appears to be when using at its native 4K resolution. When working with text documents, etc. I scale it down to 2560x1440 and its just perfect. When I watch movies and 4K content on youtube I change it back to its original 4K resoluation.

Any how having said the above it is a very beautiful beautiful monitor. I'm extremely happy with it. Also to those reading this note that I paid a little less than other folks as the unit that I have is model number LG 27MU88-W which has a higher MSRP Price than the LG 27UD88-W (not sure why resellers like Best Buy sell the 27UD88-W for a higher price but the 27MU88-W does in fact have a higher MSRP price, along with a better warranty that is 3 years on everything vs the 1 year warranty tha the U27UD88-W model has. Only difference is the outer box and the better warranty, along with cheaper price. And also that the 27MU88-W is classified as "commercial" rather than "consumer" as with the 27UD88-W.

Good to hear you like yours. I've just received the refund for mine.

I fear I won't be able to use an external monitor, there just isn't one available. I want the 4k Ultrafine, but I have no USB-C. Bummer.

You realise this is done for you by macOS? If you're scaling to 1440p, a 4K video will still be mapped pixel-to-pixel. Otherwise retina screens just wouldn't work at all.

Set your scaling to 1440p and the rest is done for you. Movies/YouTube will play in native 4K automatically.

Problem with the UltraFine range is their physical looks. God awful, in my opinion.

I popped into the Apple Store after work yesterday to check out the 13" TB MBP. I saw the UltraFine for the first time in the flesh. It honestly looks like something from the early 2000s.

In fairness, it wasn't helped by the fact they'd hooked it up to a Mac Mini that couldn't even run 5K so it was running 3200 x something in non-HiDPI mode - blurry as hell.

Regent Street store in London, if you're interested.

Folks maybe I spoke too fast with everything being all nice nice and beautiful but I seem to have no sound, does anyone know what could be the issue or if my unit is defected? I'm using a single HDMI cable from my PC to HDMI 1 in the back of the monitor, prior to that I was using a display port cable and having tried both types of cables there is no sound at all. I also checked my settings, too. Am I suppose to use two cables? One HDMI into HDMI 1 and also the Display Port Cable? or just one single cable?

You're using headphones, right?
