The Steve Jobs quotes are such a terrible argument. That was 24yrs ago and products evolve, as they should, and so do the OS’ on them…except for iPadOS apparently and that’s the issue. The hardware continues to evolve and push the boundaries but the software does not.

If Jobs purists are so adamant about the iPads purpose then why was iPadOS even created and not just left as iOS? Apple essentially put lipstick on a pig and in doing so gave false hope to consumers that the iPad could be a hybrid device. They sell all the laptop style accessories and it has its own OS yet Apple is pretending it’s not a pig.

More seriously, if you are a power user, iPad is not for you. iPad can be a primary device for the 99% of the world which doesn’t need edge case functionality.

If you need edge case functionality, either use Windows or MacOS - in most cases tbh windows is better unless you are in a creative field.

I use all 3 (macOS/Windows/iPadOS) all have their uses. I could "get away" with JUST an iPad with occasional RDP (Remote Desktop) but I like all of them and use them all to their full potential.

UPDATE...i really tried hard to keep the 11 inch M4. I really did. It in and of itself is not a bad machine in any way...but the problem is....its just a bigger less portable version of my Iphone 15 pro max!

It has a wonderful screen...no doubt there.....Its fast too...but not any faster or slower then my phone. I do enjoy the ocasional note taking on it, but outside of that, i just cant justifie it at all for MY USE.

I want to love this device. i want to still be in love with ipads, but i'm not. I truly do wish they would just become hybrid tablet/laptop devices!

Id love a foldable iPhone that opens into an Ipad mini. Id love a macbook pro that detaches off the base and becomes an ipad.

Other companies make these devices...problem is they are usually running android or Windows. Uck.

It is still at the end of the day just a bigger version of my phone with a pencil and its been that way for years and i dont see that changing anytime soon.

Sorry if that pisses you all off but tough! Apple CAN do better.
You re using it wrong I’d it seems a bigger iPhone.

i definitely can’t use affinity final cut or logic on my iPhone, sure if all you do is browsing the it’s just a big iPhone.

I'm not too sure I agree with it being a hybrid device. Depends how you look at it. I hate the idea of macOS running natively on it, but I agree with the idea that iPadOS should be more capable. From something as simple as formatting a drive, to running Xcode on it. It's great for some pros, but not everyone.

I had a Surface Book for a year when I was trying to replace my Mac/iPad setup. Beautiful hardware (in my opinion), but it wasn't really great at being a laptop or a tablet. Windows at the time wasn't great at tablet things, maybe it is now, I don't know. Other than the iPad being a little bit more capable, I think it's great just as it is. If it wasn't for some new macOS features I'm excited for (iPhone mirroring, better window control), I'd have considered selling my MacBook and going back to an iPad Pro as my main device again.

Now, a future foldable iPhone that turns into an iPad mini is a device I can see myself using. I toy around using my iPhone with a bluetooth keyboard when I'm out - it works great for me. I wish the screen was just a tad larger and I can multitask on it (like an iPad mini). If it can connect to an external monitor and at least give me all of the iPad's current features, I can see myself using this as my only computer.

While I agree with your statement, I tried to offload some very basic non "power user" tasks to my iPad Pro and had to give up since the process/workflows were ridiculously cumbersome.

One of the simplest of tasks was downloading images from the web. I collect vintage sci-fi images and typically download anywhere from 20-100+ a day. On my Mac this is a simple drag-and-drop operation. On the iPad drag-and-drop was inconsistent….sometimes no file would be downloaded, sometimes dragging an image would create a new safari window with said image in it and sometimes if my timing wasn’t perfect I couldn’t drag an image because the options menu would pop up. I couldn’t use the “download file“ feature since I didn't want them to be saved into my downloads folder and I wasn’t going to change the download preferences multiple times a day. Finally I created a shortcut script but that added a lot of time having to wait for the options menu to show then selecting share>run shortcut. It might sound trivial but it turned a very simple task into something convoluted and unnecessarily time consuming.

They're tools to do a job, whether that job is media consumption, note-taking, video conferencing or whatever.

If they don't suit your use case, buy something else?

I'm not sure why anyone expects a device to entertain them (i.e., alleviate boredom) outside of content consumption.

I would guess 99% is way too high of an estimate but do agree that a lot of people could live with it as their only device despite its limitations vs a Mac or a PC for a power user.

I personally don’t see how the iPad drag-and-drop is inconsistent, it shows you an animation or symbol to emphasis the action you are doing (green plus sign). So, I don’t buy the no file downloaded… not once have I tried to drag-and-drop something that it doesn’t appear in the target area.

You don’t have to change the download preferences…. Simply, tap the share sheet in Safari and “Save to Files.” And in most cases, doing it frequently… the action will default to the previously saved folder. I have Favorite Folders set up in the Files app that way I can determine where certain files will go.

I was watching the US Open outside on my new 12.9“ iPad Pro and I was amazed at how well I could see the video, outside, in the sun. This screen is crazy good. Now add another port and make iPad OS better and iPro could be a serious MBA replacement.

@Ludatyk My experience is exactly as yours. Dragging and dropping or downloading anything from the internet, whether it be a photo, document, or .pdf is just dead simple, fast, and intuitive. Did not have to think too much, even first time I used it. I think sometimes people just create problems on the iPad that don't exist, or at least don't need to exist. Just amazing how varied and different each persons experience is with the exact same device. Least little resistance or having to take the time to figure out a new device and its OS, and the device is just a money grabbing piece of junk, or "Big iPhone". Thinking some folk just can't be bothered with any effort. If iPad can take care of my real estate business and also be easy and fun for me to use, that really says something.;)

Well, multi times no file appeared, one of the reasons I went to the trouble of creating a download shortcut. Having to go into the share sheet and then choose a folder and then "hope" it remembers is also not as efficient as my previous workflow and repeating that process 100+ in one session became a chore.

Aye, if you want to use the Mac and prefer it to the iPad… then so be it. I do understand that we all have our preferences, but to call out drag-and-drop as being inconsistent… then that’s where I push back on.

Because I tend to do quite a bit of file saving on Safari with the iPad and not once do I run into those problems. And if you are doing 100+ sessions of saving files using the Share Sheet (Save to Files), I’d wager after the 3rd or 4th attempt… it would remember that folder location.
