I agree with you, I think also it's ugly.
I wouldn't go so far as to call it ugly, but it's definitely utilitarian. I'd prefer Apple go this route than, for example, encasing the whole thing in acrylic and eschewing icky fans and having the whole thing melt down under load (ahem), or giving it only one port which is for some godforsaken reason also the power plug in order to meet some arbitrary size-and-shape goal (ahem). But Apple have absolutely made many prettier and more interesting machines.

Anyone else notice that the headphone output has reduced volume compared to other Apple products? I use it to drive some powered desktop speakers and have to turn the volume up significantly higher with the Studio.

Because it's a headphone jack for high impedance headphones? (I don't know, but I'm curious)

Not the specs or price. The specs for the Mac Studio are great value for the price (except the 512GB storage...) The price itself is perfectly reasonable. These Macs will easily last 10 years, so long as there is no failure of components.

No, what I'm disappointed by is the design. Frankly I think it looks very ugly, just as bad as the renders predicted, if not worse. A height-stretched Mac Mini has none of the elegance of the Mac Mini form factor, and is rather ridiculous.

I'm disappointed because Apple had a real chance to showcase a bold new design, like the M1 iMac, but instead they played it very, very safe, because of "pros hate colour" or "pros hate risktaking" or whatever.

This could've been a chance to do something like the G4 Cube – heck, I bet enthusiasts are already planning to mod a Mac Studio into a G4 case. To quote Steve Jobs, Apple could've had the power and the sex. They've got the power now... just not the beautiful design they once pioneered.

Who knows where Apple design language will go in future, but what I'm seeing now is just Jony Ive-style aluminium chassis, minus Ive-style thin design. I'm not asking Macs to be ultra-thin, I'm asking them to be cool. Cool like the Cube, iMac G4 and iPod. Today, Apple's design team seems only capable of creating products that look like an iOS app. They're not pushing the boundaries anymore.
I don't care what the computer looks like, my wife thinks it looks kinda cute in a ugly way. All I care about is what it can do and so far I'm very happy with my Studio Ultra, it has handled everything I have thrown at it with no problems. The only issue I am having is my Epson SureColor P700 will not print, hopefully will get the problem sorted soon.

Something magical like the original Macintosh or say a g4 cube or the g4 iMac , or the bondi blue iMac etc , things that Steve was definitely involved in , Steve was a product and design guy , cook is more like ballmer , a boring bean counter with the design ability of a gas pump who lets Jonny ive run out of ideas with his dieter ram fixation do the designs as he hasn’t got , what’s that thing Steve said … taste
Like the Flower Power & Blue Dalmatian iMac's those were winners, the round mouse or pretty much any apple mouse when he came back to apple. And who says that your taste is right and the Studio is ugly. Some people hated the G4 iMac and the G4 Cube and the way they looked. You don't like the Studio great don't buy one, but other people might like the way it looks. Me, I purchased one I don't really care what it looks like, the computer is a tool to me, not a fashion statement.

Only 20 cpu cores. Others have 32 cpu cores. Integer is very slow.
Only 8 TB SSD instead 16 TB. But thanks for 128 GB RAM.
Only 60 Hz. Others have 120 Hz and HDMI 2.1, not the old one.
SD card slot has only UHS-II xDDD that’s stone age.
Only the old WLAN 6.
Only the old Bluetooth 5.0
No Hyperthreading
No AVX-512 (vnni)

There is no MacBook Pro 16- or 18-inch with M1 Ultra or M2 Ultra chip.
So what you are saying is the Studio is not the computer for you.

To those who say you can mount it under your desk – don’t underestimate how tall this Mac Studio really is. It’s going to get in the way, whether it’s next to the Studio Display (very low clearance, who knows if it will even fit if you lower the display with the height-adjusted stand), under your desk or literally anywhere.

The Mac Mini on the other hand was sleek. It was Steve Jobs approved. For those complaining about Steve Jobs, it is painfully obvious that the Jobs-era still enabled user repairs and upgrades. Without Jobs, Jony Ive was able to eliminate every aspect of user replaceable part. Now we praise the Mac Studio, acutely aware that the SSDs will fail, and the Ram will not be upgradeable. And yet we’re all excited because Apple brought back your precious ports? Who honestly needs ports anymore for a desktop computer, when TB 4 and USB 4 hubs exist, which are FAR more convenient?
Jobs hated expandability i.e. the very first Mac that was Jobs all the way, none of the iMacs were very user expandable, the original iMac putting more Ram was a pain in the ass. Jobs wanted computers to be appliances, read your history he as not interested in any of the devices apple came up with be easily expanded. It was Woz that insisted on having slots on the Apple //. You can credit Jobs with a lot of things, but expandability is not one of them.

I highly doubt it has anything to do with playing it safe. Simply there is less R&D needed for this design which is basically a height stretched mini as you stated. At the end of the day desktop computers are not where Apple makes their $$$ from so they probably wanted to come up with a relatively easy solution with hardware engineers designing during a pandemic that satisfies needs.

Apples issue for years post was that they would refuse to release any products that didn't ultimately satisfied your design esthetics. Apple was huge on using desktops as halo products to show off during events even if 99% of the audience wasn't actually in the market for one. Apple just got free press when releasing something like the 2013 Mac Pro with Phil shouting out "cAnT iNnOvAte aNymOre???" So instead of Apple just releasing products without too much thought into design they would ultimately hold back and not release anything at all which is clearly a strategy they have changed for a bit now even with iPhones which are about cramming multiple cameras and having lots of sizes ...etc.

I would say be careful for what you wish for. Can't always have your cake and eat it too.

It might not seem important but Apple went to me too designs in the 1990s and their stock tanked. Later they went back to taking risks with flashy designs and the stock came back.
The iMac helped, but it was the iPod and the iPhone that really made the stock jump, because it opened up the Windoz market to Apple products greatly expanding the customer base, that is when the stock started to really jump.

Exactly. Apple products literally in the museum of modern art.

It's astonishing that someone is arguing against the potential beauty of technology on an Apple forum! If you don't care what your products look like, and only care about specs, then go away and buy a DELL!
Maybe some of us like the operating system, I could care less what the computer looks like, but I sure as hell care about the operating system and can't stand to look at Windows it just feels clunky to me, where using the Mac feels smooth and easy, where things are truly plug and play and you can get as deep as you want into the bones of the OS or just stay at the GUI and actually use your computer the way god intended, its up to you. I knew from the day that I purchased my first 128K Mac to the day I received my Studio Ultra that I was using something that had a tremendous value (saving me time and effort) I love the Mac Interface, how the computer looks is totally secondary or even does not really matter.

Well, I think the summary of this thread has been fairly disappointing.

It’s obvious that people either:

A) didn’t properly read my post. I was clearly saying that the Max Studio is a really great computer worth the price, with exceptional performance, I/O and cooling. I was only taking issue with the (objectively) lazy design.

B) truly do not care about how Apple products look. If that’s the case, I don’t know why that happened. But at best, it just shows that the users of Macrumors are clearly not typical Apple fans. Guarantee that every typical Apple fan loves the design and look of their products, both UI and hardware. Most Apple fans do not read Macrumors and demand M1 Ultra performance.

It’s sad to see a company that once produced literal works of art turn into one that creates boring (aluminium) boxes. I simply think Apple could’ve done better. They play it too safe now.
