Buy what you need when you need it. Many people upgrade to the latest and greatest sooner than they need to. I'm still cranking out photos from my 42 megapixel cameras on a 2013 i7 iMac and will continue to do so until this machine dies. I've probably spent a total of around $3000 on this machine between purchase and upgrades (upgraded the fusion drive to SSD, added RAM) and it works. Sure it could be a lot faster and if I were a pro I wouldn't have any issues buying a Studio on Day 1. But I'm not a pro and I'll make do with what I've got until I need to make a decision.
The M1 Mac mini would be an upgrade from that.

ArtIsRight just released his review focused on photography.

@Pressure it definitely would be an upgrade but not one I’m interested in. I’m not uploading hundreds of photos at a time or working on 25 gb sized files. When I do upgrade it’s going to be a huge jump up

Bold new design? Were you expecting a different form factor. Like some strange wedge? And the M1 iMac is bold? Come on, it’s a box in colors. Makes me want to never buy another iMac. It’s a Mac, not bubblegum. Or Pez. The Studio hits what it needs to.

No sir. I won't even notice it's there. I was extremely disappointed by the Studio Display...what a turd.

Exactly. Apple products literally in the museum of modern art.
If you’re a fan of the “art” that hangs in the MOMA, all I can say is. I’d rather *not* have my computer look like that.

You could always attach external SSD because this mac is a desktop device - so who cares what the cords are attached to its' back.
External? meh, is another thing around and see two separate drives on the desktop, split files etc. (also I already have 5 Bay NAS) but! the point is for the price should be start at 1TB.

Gladly the ram start a 32, that's really good for the price.

Actually the REAL price for the base is $2200, why? 512 SSD is ridiculous for that machine.

Have you ever worked in an enterprise setting? Or talked or anyone who has? It’s common for enterprise users to keep most of their files on a remote server. 512 is more than adequate for them. If you need more, you can order it.

No, Apple won’t give it to you for free. And they won’t give you a pony, either.

I don't get why enterprise users should be considered as the main benchmark base of these Mac Studios? 1 TB is a standard these days for the people involved in photo/video edits. Why? Because some projects physically will not fit into leftovers of 512GB system, so you need 700-800 GB to keep your scratch projects, which buys you some time until you have to move to externals or nas.

This is correct statement. The only reason is because of the greed and people have to buy 1TB to increase profit margins on bto models.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Apple is greedy. Profits are evil. We’ve heard that about a million times. So, go find a good socialist company that will give you everything you want for free. You’re not going to convince Apple to change its evil ways just by whining about it here.

You can’t even put an OS let alone any files on a 512MB drive. We can’t keep giving you these lessons for free.

And 16 or 40 TB is a standard for other people these days.

i am not so sure why you are exaggerating the numbers here? If you can live off 128GB then good for you. Or if you need 16 or 40TB then also glad for you.

I'm kinda with you... My problem is right NOW there's no clear alternative to a 27" inch Imac. I really want an Apple Silicon desktop but I'm completely turned off by the stupid color scheme/white bezels of the 24" imac (and I don't want to go down in screen real estate). I know the Mac Studio is way more than I need but there's no clear alternative to the 2020 Intel Imac now... I'm still inclined to keep my base Studio order (even though I know it's more than I need) as I plan on keeping this thing for 5-7 years.

The more reviews I read the more I'm coming around to the argument that Apple will release some version of a 27" later this year. There feels like there's an obvious gap in the lineup now.
I noticed a whole lot of refurbs on the apple store on those new 24" imacs
