Anyone else doubting an iPP 2018 this year or June at Least?...

as much as I truly want an update pro with:

326-400 ppi
A11X
4K 60 FPS camera
Small Bezels
No home button
Face ID
New design
Bluetooth 5.0
Apple Pencil 2
Larger size screen or smaller footprint
Wicked processor speed
Etc, etc


Shouldn’t we have seen part leaks or some pictures or slight proof of an upgrade. If it’s as big as what many news outlets or rumors suggest... why no part leaks like the iPhone X had? That was supposed to be Apple’s big secret and it was blown within the first few months, but here we are with no news and a month and two weeks out from WWDC.

What say the rest of you.

I would wonder if Apple would release the 2018 iPPs in June too; if they want to continue the push toward the education sector maybe they will. Though perhaps they will wait until October since it was 19 months between refreshes for the 1st and second gen. Also, since they just gave the regular iPad pencil capabilities, I am not sure we'd see an update to the pencil so soon (2019 seems more reasonable, but that's just my spit-balling).

Regarding features?

I like some of what you posted @Kal-037.

Keep promotion and the latency and I will eventuallly upgrade

if there's an option for a password instead of just face id (may sound bass ackwards, but the less information Apple has about me physically the better),
different way to charge a pencil
and if it's more finger-print resistant.
Better battery life (I know, using the pencil is a big drain).

Most of all, I want software that just works:

I've found an annoying bug in 11.3 on my 2nd gen 12.9": now I have to tap twice very hard and quickly to disable to WiFi and bluetooth in settings. I shut off both to extend the battery life on my iPP since I'd like to hang onto this one for at least another 18-24 months before I upgrade (Mac comes first).

I think strategically Apple should upgrade their iPP line soon because people usually prefer the Apple Pencil feature and not want to pay for a similar looking device that’s nearly 1 year old. Apple is right now in need to change the iPPs at least design-wise and add some more features to really make the price difference justified. At least that’s my $.02 ☺️

There were no physical part leaks or photos with iPad Pro 10.5”. The only source for that model was Ming-Chi Kuo’s words.

We’re experiencing the same thing this year.

Part leaks don’t come out for free. Someone has to pay the worker to leak it. If no one feels it’s worthwhile paying for it, workers won’t take risks for no reward.

Why would you upgrade a ‘pro’ device just because it looks prettier? (Yes I know people will but if you were being rational..)

Pencil was a big reason, but laminated screen, True Tone, promotion etc are also good reasons. Design and faceID are not pro reasons to upgrade - you’ll still have the question ‘why should I buy a pro if I just want a cheap iPad that can take notes’. And the answer will still be the same - realistically you probably will be fine with the cheaper one

Yes, this is a little un-nerving. By now we should have seen some more leaks...which aint coming. That raises the doubt level. The WWDC is happening for ure, will that include the iPad Pro release. Difficult to say at the moment. No rumors coming absolutely ! Even Min Chi Kuo has gone underground it seems

The iPad is the least ‘regular’ device in the lineup - difficult to predict when it’ll be updated. My guess is September but who knows. They also talked about iOS 12 being focused on stability so they may not be talking about new features which can mean less need to talk about new hardware until closer to launch in the fall.

With the recent significant discounts on MBA I would also guess WWDC may be focused on refreshing the laptop line - updating or killing off MBA, lowering price of entry for MacBook, 8th gen CPUs give them some interesting options at the lower wattage end. Too early for discussion about ARM migration for OSX?

There are already "modern iPad" references in iOS code, so I think the iPad Pro will be updated sometime this year, but I don't know if I think it will be June or not.

I do not plan on upgrading my iPad Pro this year. I want to save my money and upgrade my Apple Watch instead--it's a much higher priority for me right now than a new iPad. At the same time, I hate that I'm going to miss out on the new iPad Pro awesomeness this year and will probably be waiting until the next upgrade to trade up from my current 10.5" model.

I just keep telling myself that even with the rumored redesign, the new models will still be large flat rectangles with screens, very similar to the one I currently own, and probably not with a ton more functionality other than adding the UI from the iPhone X and a faster processor. (Maybe a new Apple Pencil too.)

I just can't justify owning a third iPad Pro model in as many years. I want to get off the crazy upgrade train so I can get some other items I want/need this year.

I would be completely surprised if there are any new iPad Pros at any time this year.

It was 18 months from when the first gen 12.9 Pro was released until the 2nd Gen (along with the 10.5). That was back in June of 2017. These are high end tablets that command high end prices. If they are updated too frequently (and once a year IS too frequent) then that reduces the incentive and appeal to buy them. Paying a premium for a device that will so soon be bettered is not a good thing.

The die-hards in this forum who are looking to upgrade the Pros they bought last year with a new model this year represent an insignificant fraction of the customers at large.

Rumors are swirling around that iOS 12 is going to be a Snow Leopard-like housecleaning release. If that is true, then Apple will most likely hold back on most new hardware features, since that would require additional changes to iOS which essentially defeats the housecleaning goals of iOS 12. They already have their hands full with iPhone enhancements that will require changes to iOS. Porting iPhone hardware features over to the iPad is not as simple and straight-forward as one might think.

For these reasons (as well as others), I'm thinking that the EARLIEST we can expect to see updated Pros is March 2019.

If you were able to justify 2 iPad Pro models in 2 years, then you can easily justify the 3rd in 3. That said, no way they'd keep the same pricing structure for an 'X' style iPad Pro. It'd surely cost a small fortune, so perhaps we won't see that this year until they can get the costs down a bit.

I'd wager we'll see some kind of spec bump to the iPad Pro models, A11X for sure. Maybe 6GB RAM on the 12.9'?

I completely disagree with you about there not being much of a gap, because Pencil integration is just one of many things the iPad Pro could do that the iPad couldn't. A10X is faster than A10 by a not insignificant amount, 4 GB of RAM vs. 2 GB of RAM is a bigger deal in iOS 11 for iPad than people realize (models with 2 GB of RAM do not take full advantage of iOS 11 multitasking), the quad audio is worlds better than the 2 speaker audio on the standard model, the screen is bigger on the 10.5" model than the 9.7" model (obviously)and is fully laminated, and the Smart Connector gives you the ability to use a keyboard that doesn't require charging or pairing.

HOWEVER

As far as what the average customers see with their eyes at the store, they see the same basic visual design with both now compatible with Pencil. So yes, an iPhone X style redesign would add a lot of razzle dazzle to the iPad Pro line, but the 2017 iPad Pros both still WAY hold their own against the 2018 iPad. It's just that the people who don't know much about the guts of iPads (most people) won't know the difference other than what they can see.

The release of the iPhone SE and 2017/18 iPads is, IMO, an admission by Apple that there's a growing divide in their customer base. Not everyone who jumped on the premium Apple train in the past is willing to continue to do so. From a typical casual user, the improvements in hardware are not sufficient incentive for them to regularly upgrade. I suspect that segment of the customer base has been slowing down in their purchases over the past 3-4 years.

By offering solid, less-than-premium, less expensive options, Apple can draw those people back in. They don't have the pressure of customers walking away because there is no lower-priced option. This in part explains why Apple felt safe in producing a $1000+ iPhone after they had released the SE (and saw how well it was received and how well it sold). I would not be surprised to similarly see an iPad Pro that is more expensive than the current Pros.

iPhones get more hardware updates in 2 years. iPads don't. The 2nd gen Pro 12.9 is basically the 1st gen 12.9 with ProMotion. On the other hand there are many more features in the iPhone X compared to iPhone 6s

You conveniently skipped over over the iterative updates that were the iPhone 6, 6s, 7, and 8.

I think it's nuts to suggest annual iPad updates are too frequent. To placate current iPad owners who can't afford the latest device, Apple should wait 18-24 months between refreshes? There are plenty of people who can afford the latest technology and want it when it becomes available.

Can you imagine if Tesla reduced their hardware updates to every 18 or 24 months in order to placate the small group of owners who couldn't afford the latest model?

For a company that is defining the future of mobile computing, it makes zero sense.

annual ipad releases are fine. Different people are in different places in their own personal upgrade cycle, so even if a 2019 ipad is just a 2018 with a CPU/memory bump, that'll be helpful to someone upgrading from eg a 2015 ipad.

People don't need to upgrade every year. I'm a sucker for this on the ipad, and I have no idea why. Maybe because I spend more time with it than my phone, but I often upgrade every year. If I think logically they're all just glass rectangles that do mostly the same thing, and I'm not scratching the surface of their capabilities. Do I need an ipad X just because it has smaller bezels? No. Will I most likely internally justify the purchase to myself? Probably.
