After searching in vain for a refurbished hex-core on the Apple site for weeks, and rejecting just about every other option on eBay and Craigslist, I opted for a new hex-core. Sure, I could buy a used quad-core and upgrade the processor ... I have better uses for my time.
My rationale ...
- My MP 3,1 is showing its age, RAM is way too expensive and I have the ancient ATI 2600 video card (one has already failed).
- I figure that I can get about $1K for my 3,1; putting the price of entry of a 5,1 at $2K, not including 24GB of RAM from OWC at $300.
- I get a machine that is 30% faster than my current MP and has a relatively modern video card.
- I get a MP that has a one year warranty and AppleCare for two more for $175 from B&H. (Good for resale)
- If the New MP is a bummer price or feature-wise, I have a very capable system for several years.
- If the New MP is wonderful, I'm sure the 5,1 hex-core will retain much of its value as many folks just plain don't want the new tubular Mac. So I believe I can sell it without too much of a loss and move on.
I'll just run the MA, move the four disks to the new MP and there it is. And I'll watch with curiosity as early adopters deal with the heartaches.
Yes, I considered a Hackintosh. An i7 3770K at 3.5 GHz would be about the same power. But if I'm not willing to upgrade the processor I'm certainly not going to spend the time to build one from scratch and put up with the ongoing maintenance hassles. But kudos to those who do.
