Yeah , it doesnt really sound like fans, but like a whirrrrrr. Its not the loudness, but rather how annoying it is.

It's reassuring that a lot of people have dead silent iMacs. its a tradeoff that I can no longer have hte 7600 GT, but its well worth it considering I will only walk out of hte apple store with a perfect machine. I will bring a dead pixel checker loaded onto a flash drive.

I just read your other post. I changed the output on temp monitor to Farenheiht. I'm now at 143.6 Farenheit. You mentioned getting up to 180 or so.

I have 2 gb of ram and the bigger video card...could this be keeping the temperature down a bit?

Now I'm at 145...seems steady there.

Hope that helps.

Well I have the 7300gt 500gb hard drive and 2.16ghz processor I figured it should still be pretty similar... While recording for the past 2 hours it's been pretty steady at 167 degrees fahrenheit... with an ambient temperature of 77 degrees.

Anyways, thanks for your input! I really appreciate it! It's possible I may have gotten a bad power supply... >_<

When I get a second I'll try recording HD to see if that cranks up the heat a bit. Last night I was just watching HD.

yeah my 5th replacemnt is quiet so far. when you dim the display it hums ,but unless I develop some sort of vision impairement, I wont be dimming the screen:)

If you search other forums on the net, it seems that every single (well almost...) 24" iMac as that annoying display hum. Although I thoroughly agree that forums tend to attract "problems" (not everyone who gets a flawless machine posts about it...), but it really does seem that everyone has the hum. I'm in the process of sending back iMac #2....in hopes that #3 doesn't have a hum. If you do a search, there is actually quite a lengthy thread about this issue. It also seems that the hum problem is more dominant in the 24" model. All that being said, does anyone have a 24" iMac that does not hum? Moreover, does anyone have a 24" iMac with no noises, hard drive issues, crashes, kernel panics, dead pixels, etc?

mine is dead quiet!

I've had my 24" now for almost a full month and haven't had any problems at all with it. No hum, no HD problems and it's been constantly on and only rebooted 3 times (due to updates) in all that time too. I DO log out and put it to sleep...but I never turn it all the way off. I also should say that I took off the auto-dimming feature so it never dims...it just jumps to screen-saver after 15 minutes, then turns monitor off after 20.

It's been rock solid. I it's VERY quiet...but you also have to take this into context that I came from a self-built PC that had 5 fans running in it and it sounds like a jet-engine. So when the Mac is the only thing running, it's eerily quiet.

If you are reading this because your imac has the display hum and you don't know whether it is normal or not, I would say that your machine is actually faulty.

I recently bought a refreshed imac 24", and not long after starting to use it noticed the irritating hum. I took the machine back to the mac store and they swapped it for another refreshed machine no questions asked. The new machine does not have the hum at all.

The hum which seems to be a widespread problem on the new imacs is very annoying. Although it is fairly quiet, the hum is more irritating than a loud fan because it is a distinct note as opposed to the random noise of air rushing over a heatsink. I am a composer and am horribly allergic to noises. if you find the hum gets to you I would recommend you exchange your machine before the 14 warranty expires. Macs are expensive, but the best computers on the market. You should not settle for less.

P.S. I should add that I did not install the efi firmware 1.1 update yet. Having read some other posts I am suspicious that it may be some sort of os problem (hum does not increase when dimming with windows bc or 3rd party apps). All the other updates to date seem to be fine.

My 5th iMac defintely hums but only when the brightness is lowered. the hum is gone at the highest brightness setting , which I use 100% of the time. Should I return it?
I refused to settle for anything less than perfect...especially because this machine was so expensive. If I were to only use hte machine on low brightness, I would have to return it no questions asked. the sound is annoying. Its a good thing its completely inaudible at the highest brightness.

heh, looks like number 5 is no good for me either. Im really surprised by the lackluster quality control...just terrible. Apple compensated me with a USB flash drive (2GB), which I received, and a pair of soundsticks II, which I have yet to receive.

It would seem to me that this forum is replete with happy apple customers and extremely satisfied iMac customers. Instead of focusing on your bad luck you continue to bash apple. I'm betting that the staff at the Apple store have some interesting names for you.

I can just see you setting up your iMac in the store...running your dead pixel checking software...examining the display with a magnifying glass..."Aha...stuck pixel at 12 o"clock! This computer is so going back!"

I think you should ask for your money back.

Sorry, but I disagree with you. The forum has a number of users who have tons of problems with the computer, such as myself. I'm not bashing apple in any way...I admit I have terrible luck...but four bad computers in a row? Two of them were completely unusable. I had some really high expectations given the amount of hype macs are given...and for the price I paid for the machine, I don't think there's any problem returning the machine for a dead pixel...and checking it in the store because by iMac number 3 I learnt I had some pretty bad luck. Why should I have to settle with a 2600$ computer for several years with a dead pixel or two? To make the people at the Apple store happy? I think not. If it was iMac number one, I wouldn't have checked for any problems in the store...but given the experience I had, and the knowledge of what a pain it is to return such a machine, I think checking it in the store is completely justified.

I was thinking the same thing.

No computer is completely quiet. I don't know about this hum you are talking about but I sell Macs and I have never had a customer come in with a humming issue on any of the iMac's, but it seems to be an issue.

Turn your speakers up and you won't hear the hum ;) ;)

I disagree with any advice to ignore the problem

As I said before, my old imac hummed, I swapped it, new imac does not = me happy.

The guys in the apple store had no problem at all swapping it, service was excellent and friendly. They said I was right to come in and swap it.

It is not unknown for an excellent company mistakes, and it seems that apple have learnt from the mistakes they made over the faulty ipod battery saga. The brightness dimming IS a fault with the screen. If you want to put up with it, do so but you are not doing anyone any favours. If apple's customers lower their expectations, then apple may lower their standards.

Somewhat unrelated, but I had an iMac G5 for awhile that made that awful noise (was more of a crappy fan design than a transformer hum) that Apple wouldn't take back or repair which I finally got rid of and replaced with a mini. Anyways, that plus all these threads just reaffirms with me that I am right in thinking:

1) the iMac G5 design is inherently flawed.
2) I shouldn't buy another iMac.
3) Apple's product line has a gap in it that sticks out like a sore thumb (that is a mid-level consumer grade machine that is not an AIO).

This is bumming me out, though, because I have been contemplating trying the iMac again (my wide would surely love a "free" 19" LCD to replace her old 15") but I suppose I'll just have to wait and see if Apple either makes a decent value mini next time around, or if they bring back the "single G5" level Mac (that would be a Mac Pro that starts around $1500).
