POS meaning Point-of-sale ? What was wrong with it?

And why go to Vista? Where there specific PC apps you needed?

And why go to Vista for a while?

None of this makes sense at this point.

I have seen many posts from Cybergypsy trash talking Apple, and I have asked for clarification, but I haven't gotten any.

Is it really Bill Gates?

It is a bit strange ... why post so many messages on an iMac forum if you bought at 24" iMac and then sold it because you dont like it. And went and bought a HP iMac knockoff.

Then jump to Vista temporarily like it is a substitute for waiting for re-designed hardware but one that will have exactly the same OS.

Perplexing ...

new Imac 24'' AL , no hums or anything , extremely quiet , no iFreezes either , temperatures while gaming or high system use increase by around 15 degrees celsius for cpu , gpu and power source , usually cpu is under 40 , gpu around 50 and power source around 55

24" AlumiMac purchased on release date: 8/7 and manufactured between 8/13-8/19. No hum at all. The machine is practically silent.

I think you might have misinterpreted this thread (and the person above you) - this was an old thread created for the white iMac. The new iMacs don't have any reported humming problems. So go enjoy your new mac!

I always wonder about people that say Mac's are silent. I have never in my life seen a system that is totally silent. If system has fans and harddrives it will never be Totally silent.

My iMac is quiet, in fact as it warms it seems to become even better but I wouldn't call it silent.

A humming noise is often a power supply noise so that might be something to look into. could also be something in the area of your system causing feedback, wires next to each other, something not shielded correctly. Only a guess.

I have owned several Apple computers over two decades non all of them quiet, non of them silent. Thats a very subjective term.

So people are having hum issues now? Sigh... Here is the trash can...

No mine doesn't, other than the perfectly normal sounds that fans and hard drives make.

Yeah, I agree with you. I've never heard a "dead-silent" mac before.

The hum is there no matter what. At max brightness it's not there but as you lower the brightness it becomes obvious. Lowering the brightness barely changes the brightness on the screen anyway on the white iMac, and I've never needed to lower it anyway, so the fact that it hums doesn't bother me. I never hear it because it's always set to max brightness.

Yeah I just noticed that. I don't know how the poster above me was replying to a thread that was dead for 8 months but I just assumed by his post this was a current thread about the new iMacs.

My bad.

My prior 20" Core Duo (white) iMac never hummed either though for the record.

I classify "silent" in this case as noticing no difference in the noise level in the room with the machine on and off.

Of course, that's sitting at least an arm's length from the machine. I know that if I hold my ear to the machine I can hear the faint humming of the fans and PSU.

My hearing is fine by the way.

No Hum, no freezing

I have a 24" Al iMac, and I don't have any noticeable hum, nor the freezing problem I keep reading about. In fact, it is remarkably quiet, and I rarely hear the fan(s) at all. I have had very rare freezes, but it is rare enough that I am satisfied as compared to my PC.

Is there a way to 'push' the machine to verify that I don't have a 'freezer'? I still have Tiger, so the Arabesque Leopard SS is not available. Maybe I'm just not pushing the machine hard yet?

maybe i'm getting a little bit paranoid here. i can notice some continuous noise from the computer when it's on if the room is quite. it's not very loud, but noticeable. i think most people would say that it is normal, but since there are many people claiming that their iMacs are dead silent, I wonder if mine it's faulty.

So my question is, are there iMacs so silent that working with them in a quiet room is impossible to hear any noise coming from the computer (besides usual hard drive work)?

well since i have my G5 (3 years ago) i can download while sleeping my old PC made to much noice this Imac is quit as a wissel

that's my point. the actual noise does not bother me, but since there are users claiming that their iMacs are completely silent, I wonder if that's possible or i'm just getting paranoid, reading too many posts.

I'd be worried if my iMac didn't hum a little. Between the hard drive and fans rotating (causing vibration, which in turn can be heard as humming) I'd have a dead iMac or bad fans.

I actually just purchased a 24" iMac and read about the hum noise on the forums and was dreading it, however to my surpirse, my iMac is super silent. I can't hear a thing, even with my ear up against the screen....

However, if there's a CD inside then it makes some hum sound, but only audible when I listen for the hum behind the iMac, when I'm sitting in front of it, I can't hear a damn thing.

I believe the "hum" is on 24" white iMacs. Mine has it, but not nearly as noticable as my iMac G5 rev a fan hell.

24" iMac noise

Just got my 24" iMac Extreme..have had it on 14 to 18 hours since I received it last Thursday!

1. Super quiet, unlike my G4 tower.
2. No freezing.
3. No gradation
4. No yellow screen
5. No dead pixels

Do have a bluetooth freezing problem from time to time, but no biggy!

Lovin this new iMac!

Well I've had my new 24" 2.8 iMac for 5 days now and I love it.....but.....I've noticed a really annoying humming. It doesn't change with the screen brightness and is still there if I lift the iMac off the desk so it's not a resonating issue. The fans are extremely quiet but the humming is quite annoying...it sounds to my ears like a dodgy power supply.

I have spent 5 days getting the computer all set up and I had to wait two weeks for it to arrive in the first place so I really don't want to have to send it back.....If I contact applecare are they likely to send me a replacement or will they want me to send back my current one first?

Thanks,
Mark Morb

When I use my 24" iMac Aluminum model I hear a constant hum.

Oh wait ! ! ! ! ! ! !

That's me humming because of how well it performs! :D :p

I have come to believe that there are many people who have NEVER OWNED a Mac, that come to Mac forums to bash and trash Macs.

These same people come to Honda Motorcycle forums trashing Honda and saying Harley is better, yet they do not and never have owned a Motorcycle.

Then they move over to the Toyota Motor Vehicle forums trashing Toyota claiming their Dodge is better.

I am a new member here, but not new to Macs. Researching the iPhone on the internet led me here. I can honestly say that none of the Macs I have owned in the last 3 years have been a problem for me. I wish I could say that about the MS Windows boxes I have owned, well there was one laptop but that's a unique story.

In the end I take forum postings with a grain of salt. Sometimes I ask dumb questions myself. ( to me a dumb question is one asked on a forum when the answer can be found in HELP ) :D

the white macs hum if you turn down the screen's brightness.

i have zero idea why. thankfully, i never need to since calibration, so it's not really an issue.
