Noted that Cybergypsy doesn't really mention whether his POS hummed or not, either.

I have a 24" iMac and I have VERY acute hearing,(irritatingly so, I need a white noise generator to sleep and I can hear hatching mosquitoes take their first breath as they emerge through the water surface...), and the hum that I hear is quite unobtrusive, it sounds like a soft ocean breeze gently wafting through the beach grasses........no wait, it sounds like a modest fan hum that would be appropriate for the current temp of my CPUs.

As someone who is READILY annoyed by out-of-place soft noises, I would have to say that my iMac is quiet and functioning correctly.

Oh.
And I also am among those who don't work my computer with my head all that close to the monitor.

snicker.

(It was a good spirited snicker, though.)

2.8ghz

I've got a 24" 2.8ghz 2gb ram imac and i've noticed the humming. When I got my mac I was pleased because I knew one of the things that would be cool was the fact it was so quiet compared to my loud pc i had previously. Anyone know what I can do? I can't go tot he hassle of sending it back really...

No hum here.
To enjoy complete silence, i have to switch off my external hard disk (Iomega, Usb).
That device produces more noise than my iMac (even when not writing/reading).

The hum that I originally described has nothing to do with the fan. It 100% has to do with the screen. The hum is absent when the display alone goes to sleep and nearly absent at max brightness. As the brightness is dimmed down, the hum gets louder and louder. It's a super annoying sound. Lucky for me I keep it on max brightness all the time (but other people surely don't).

So close!

Well, I just got my new 24" 2.4 and I was so happy because it was silent as a uh, uh(insert something really freakin silent). BUT THEN, I ran the system updater and installed a bunch of updates. When I came back into the room the updates where finished and I noticed a significant hum. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell which one of the updates woke the angry beast sleeping in my new machine. I will say though, it's not that bad. I do hear it but only when there is no other noise in the room.

No.

My story here:

I think Seagate drives are to blame. And, no, it isn't my display, maybe its a fan, but I'm pretty sure its the HD.

Yeah, I agree with you. I've never heard a "dead-silent" mac before.

The hum is there no matter what. At max brightness it's not there but as you lower the brightness it becomes obvious. Lowering the brightness barely changes the brightness on the screen anyway on the white iMac, and I've never needed to lower it anyway, so the fact that it hums doesn't bother me. I never hear it because it's always set to max brightness.

I have.
