I currently do work on an iPad Air 2 64, and use a mini 4 LTE for my own personal stuff.

I plan to replace the Air 2 with a 12.9 LTE 1TB model, and would love to also upgrade the mini. I would really like to see a pro mini or a mini 6 that uses the Apple Pencil 2, and be able to use the same pencil on both devices.

I do not use a phone. I would be interested in an Apple Watch if they would remove the requirement to have an iPhone as well.

iPads are awesome, and minis rock!

Wow--you're even more all in on iPad than I am!! Do do you use the iPad mini more as your "phone"? Do you rely on Facetime audio/video mostly for phone calls? I'm curious. But I imagine that it can't be that difficult. I rarely use my iPhone as an actual phone and could probably get away with it easily. I will not give up my Apple Watch though.

Yes, I use an app called Freetone, now called Textme. It is a free app that allows me to make cell phone calls with my mini, but more frequently, I use it for sending and receiving SMS with non apple people. It also does voice mail, and does free long distance in North America. There is a pop up ad picture after each phone call, which is easy to clear.

The best way to hold the iPad mini for calls is upside down, with the bottom speakers near your ear, and the microphone down to your mouth. The iPad does not have ear rejection, so don’t press it against your face.

It works for me!

Currently thinking of replacing my desktop with an iPad Pro as my only computing device (other than my phone). My needs involve re-encoding videos in handbrake to play on my TV, photo/video editing, 3D modelling and gaming. The rest of the time is just consuming content on the internet.

What kind of CAD / 3D do you do? I used to do some pretty big personal projects on SketchUp back in the day. I found a perfect app on iOS for iPad and Apple Pencil that did 3D in a similar way 'for anyone', but sadly was a subscription model. Maybe if you do it a lot, you'd be well satisfied with this?

If the IOS and PadOS article today is correct about a functioning download manager, I'll sell my laptop and go with a 2018 Mini desktop and an iPad pro. I have one use case that requires being able to have editable files ON the device, not somewhere in the cloud. These are files off the web (dropbox). I can, I believe, also use the iPad Pro as a screen for the Mini in a fairly portable scenario.

I literally sold my Air 3 for this reason (lack of download manager) in May. It was trying to download a royalty free MP3 background music track to put into iMovie and nothing was working. It was for a work project too and suddenly I had spent 25 mins of time on the clock doing something simple D; I regret it now that we're getting one in iPad OS.

I assume your workflow does not involve any cuting and pasting? Because the ipad can't effectively do
that.

You're welcome! It is possible ;-)

On my goodness I can show you how to scrap on my iPad. I have been wanting to do a series on this. I actually design scrapbook kits on my iPad as well.

I'd have thought plenty of apps exist for this on the iPad!

Just wondering if anyone was going iPad Pro only with the release of iOS 13 and external hard drive support.

I personally need two devices bc I travel and if I went iPad only I would have to haul it around constantly and in the past when I've done that I've eventually dropped and broken it. So I have a MacBook at home and an iPad for traveling. That being I always wish I had just one device with it being the iPad.

Yes 2018 Ipad Pro 12.9, and 6s+. Getting an Iphone next year though. I had to buy one in 2017 and my options were 6s+, 7+, or 8+. 10 was too small for me. Paid 6s+ off, waiting for this great 2020 design to come. Also looking forward to the new LED pro.

I've been slowly moving in that direction.

My 2010 27" iMac has served mostly as a data backup device for the past two years - it downloads and keeps full resolution copies of my iCloud Photos library, iCloud Drive data and other personal files which then get backed up to a Time Capsule, an external HDD and offsite encrypted cloud storage.

For now I don't see going iPad-only as possible because I couldn't sufficiently replicate this backup setup on it, however with the introduction of Sidecar I'm seriously considering a headless Mac mini as my next Mac. It would continue to do the same things my iMac does now, while my iPad pro would continue to be my main device through which I could access the Mac when needed.

Notably this is for personal use. For work I can't and don't want to go iPad-only. It would seriously reduce my productivity.

Out of curiosity, is the iPad a good device for music production? I mean I know a few programs for macOS, but I barely know software for music creation/production on iPad.

There is garageband for iOS. I haven't used it extensively, but it seems suitable for a small band and supports bluetooth midi. It probably depends what level of music production you're working on.

I don’t need the pro’s more efficient processing capabilities which are completely wasted on me for what I use it for. That’s an unnecessary expense in my case..BUT, paying premium price for a pro model is the only way for me to have a 12.9 display. I’d love to see a standard or mid tier iPad with 12.9 form factor. For now my only option is to go pro and likely never utilise the pro potential

Apple could have done this by using the older 12.9" body to have a 12.9" iPad Air (rest of spec as 10.5" iPad air). But then again this would further complicate an already complicated iPad line up !

have you considered a refurb 12.9" iPad Pro 2017? the 64GB one is £559 on the apple refurb site when in stock (comes and goes)

Yeah, I considered the 12.9 (2017) as an upgrade to my 10.5 pro, but ended up going with the 2018 pro. It’s a great iPad but I could’ve saved significantly if I’d gone with the 2nd gen 12.9 which would have easily ticked all my boxes.

I’ve been considering selling my MacBook Pro and iPad Pro and getting a 3rd gen iPad Pro with iOS 13. So I’d use an iPhone XS Max and an iPad Pro. I’m just curious if anyone else has?
Over the last three years I have progressively used my 12.9” iPad Pro (upgraded progressively from 1st to 2nd to 3rd editions) more and more and my Mac less. With iPadOS it is easier than ever to just use an iPad. The Mac continues to sit on my desk, but I doubt if once a week I actually use - while I am on my iPad Pro 8-10 hours a day for work (as director of international business) and leisure. It does most of what I want and I just much prefer using - it feels the future.

I have no wish to go back to a Mac.

My laptop is practically redundant since using iPad. I can’t remember last switching it on ;)

Actually, I think the only reason I still have a laptop is to run iTunes, should I ever need to restore or move media etc..Otherwise I would have sold mine long ago. Right now it’s only used to connect apple devices to the mothership

I think it boils down to how much keyboarding you need to do. If you Write a lot or frequently work with spreadsheets, you are probably better off with an OS that is keyboard/trackpad centric rather than touch centric. Otherwise you will constantly be reaching up to touch the screen. Also, with a laptop you can move more rapidly between apps and documents. I just don’t see the point of frequently using an iPad in laptop mode.....just use a laptop if that is what you need.

Onthe other hand, there are folks that primarily want to work in tablet mode (touch first with a Pencil). For these folks, an iPad is hard to beat. These people only occasionally need to use the iPad in laptop mode, so they don’t give that much up and an iPad can be their primary computer.

Pro 10.5 (for editing and media consumption) and my built gaming rig for well gaming... I straight up refuse to do any sort of heavy editing on windows. I find the experience to be much nicer on the iPad for any type of creative work... just sucks trying to get all your files on here that you need when you don’t have any adapters.

Recently, I sold my used pro and opted for a used Air 3 cheap - saved a bunch of money. Honestly, I think the pro is too expensive for myself. I don’t need the processor power, didn’t really use the pencil, and didn’t need the higher storage. That’s just me. If yr an artist, or just need the latest and greatest, the pro is nice. I miss the faceid though...but that’s about it. I think most people could be fine with an Air or the standard iPad.

For the last couple of years, I have been trying to exclusively use an iPad Pro 10.5, then 12.9, then 11, then 12.9 again. I disliked holding them, and found myself using them with the smart keyboards only. I realized I was trying to make an iPad into a laptop, which I already have, and not using the iPad for what it was originally designed for—holding it in the hand for a more intimate consumption of material. Not only that, to me they made for a worse laptop experience than my MacBook, though I still needed to use the pencil. Since the introduction of the iPad Mini 5, I’m in heaven. It’s light, I can hold it in my hand and take notes with the pencil, and it’s a great experience. I bought a Brydge keyboard, and now I have a netbook, a laptop trend which I loved several years ago. I really like this combo, and I seem to be sticking with it.

Can totally appreciate this. I’m riding out the last 4 months of AppleCare on my 2017 iPP 12.9 hoping to see what the Surface Pro X has in store for me in terms of app compatibility. Hopefully I can make the switch to one of those at which time I intend to get rid of my 12.9 and replace it with a Mini 5. Sometimes certain tools just can’t do the jobs you want them to do efficiently or effectively. There’s a lot of things I love my iPad for and a handful of things it just can’t do or sucks at. Life’s short, no sense in wasting time trying to turn an anvil into a spade and spanner, I’ll just buy a spade and spanner. . .

Yes!!! I think I’m more enamored with the idea of having an all-in-one device, but it just doesn’t work for me. I can’t edit music metadata with my iPad or compress videos, so I can’t completely ditch my MacBook. When i do work on my MacBook, I’m reminded what a great experience it is. But I still need that Apple Pencil for work. Hope you get a mini 5, it’s a fantastic tablet!

I’ve been iPad only for my personal computer since the 1st 9.7 Pro with Smart Keyboard and Pencil.

I use it for standard media consumption as well as photo and video editing, all hobby type stuff, nothing work related.

I’m provided a Windows laptop for work, which I need to use, although the tasks I do could easily be completed with the Pro if personal devices were permitted. Mostly Microsoft Office type tasks. I do use my iPad with some work provided apps, WebEx meetings and note taking.

I’m close to being iPad exclusive. I cannot wait for that day to come!

This reminded me of something that happened to me earlier this past week. I love my windows laptop that my company provided me, the thing is loaded to the gills. I was hosting a half day conference and was using the laptop for presenters at our conference to use to display their powerpoints. Mid morning I had the need to edit an excel spreadsheet for work and forward to another manager for submission as a deliverable. I thought “Heck, no problem I’ll just fire up Excel on my iPad Pro and do it.”. I sat there for 10 minutes trying to figure out how to select multiple columns and make them all a specific column width. Turns out it’s impossible in the mobile version of Excel so I gave up and waited until the conference was done to do it on my laptop. I could do it in Numbers but nobody uses that in my office so it was pointless to try. I wasn’t about to do the file format conversion dance just to find a workflow to produce the output format I wanted.

Sad but I can’t seem to run away from having multiple tools in my toolbox despite companies like Apple proclaiming the prowess of the iPad or Microsoft proclaiming that their software has full multi-platform support.

With a Bluetooth keyboard attached, tap the column header to select it... Hold SHIFT and right arrow ...

And also... don't leave things last minute.

Thanks, I’m aware that one can select multiple adjacent columns and visually resize them together using that method - that’s just not what I was trying to do. On full version of Excel one is able to CTRL click column headers of non-adjacent columns or rows and manually enter column/row sizes in points to precisely format a spreadsheet. Is there a trick to that on the mobile version?

And also . . . The last minute nature of the need was put on by one of my clients, not brought on by me being as irresponsible as you presume me to be.
