What kind of CAD / 3D do you do? I used to do some pretty big personal projects on SketchUp back in the day. I found a perfect app on iOS for iPad and Apple Pencil that did 3D in a similar way 'for anyone', but sadly was a subscription model. Maybe if you do it a lot, you'd be well satisfied with this?

I literally sold my Air 3 for this reason (lack of download manager) in May. It was trying to download a royalty free MP3 background music track to put into iMovie and nothing was working. It was for a work project too and suddenly I had spent 25 mins of time on the clock doing something simple D; I regret it now that we're getting one in iPad OS.

You're welcome! It is possible ;-)

I'd have thought plenty of apps exist for this on the iPad!
Does Sketchup allow 3D animation too? I’ve dabbled in it before years ago on a PC but only as a hobby and would like to do it again one day, but I don’t know if any apps in the iPad that allow this? Are there any?

I don’t think it does, but then again if it did I hadn’t discovered it. It Used to have a lot of handy little features when it was owned by Google and free for the most part, but now that Trimble own it some mapping tools no longer work and they’re really pushing the paid version. Shapr3D is my next step but it’s also grossly expensive for a hobbyist Home user with no money coming from time spent on it.

Thanks, I’m aware that one can select multiple adjacent columns and visually resize them together using that method - that’s just not what I was trying to do. On full version of Excel one is able to CTRL click column headers of non-adjacent columns or rows and manually enter column/row sizes in points to precisely format a spreadsheet. Is there a trick to that on the mobile version?

And also . . . The last minute nature of the need was put on by one of my clients, not brought on by me being as irresponsible as you presume me to be.

Try it and see, I haven’t tried that on mobile yet. Also, request the feature from Microsoft. They genuinely listen (as do many iPad OS app developers) and will add stuff people want. That wouldn’t be a big deal for them to do.

In that case your client can wait, if it’s their fault. So long as you’re doing the best you can, that’s their problem!

Yeah I’ll have to do a feature request, doing CTRL does not allow non-adjacent cell selection.

As for the client relations thing, not an option. Because of our responsiveness this particular client throws millions our way in contracts annually and we’re on speed dial when they have emergency response projects. The responsiveness is our competitive edge.

I’ve been considering selling my MacBook Pro and iPad Pro and getting a 3rd gen iPad Pro with iOS 13. So I’d use an iPhone XS Max and an iPad Pro. I’m just curious if anyone else has?
Been successfully using iPads since 2013 as my main computer only using desktop pc because of iOS limitations.
Pro 1 changed that, as did 2, but then iPad Pro 3/2018 made my iMac forgotten.

Recently came across a speed bump in my decision on what to purchase recently. A MBP or iPad. or Both? I weighed the options for a couple of weeks. MBP would cost me $2,200 refurb with the specs I wanted. 13", i7, 16gb ram, 512 SSD. iPad Pro 11", 512, WIFI+Cellular - $1,049.00. Then I asked myself, do I really need a $2k+ laptop? What would I be doing? Photos, web, email, light office/pages, etc stuff. That's about it. I also wanted portability, take it with me, take notes, lay in bed, on vacation. Simple, lots of battery life.

Then it hit me, I don't need a MBP. It would be wasted on me. I literally can do everything I need on an iPad. Everything. Especially with the new iPadOS 13, it's even more feature filled now (better than it was).

So I got the iPad Pro. If I need a MB, I have my work machine and a Mini at home. Rarely use either. Usually on my iPhone.

Pretty much. Got rid of my MacBook Pro, upgraded to the 12.9 from the 10.5 pro, still have the 10.5 that I use in bed and on the toilet loooove the 12.9 and I do most of my work on it. I also have a Mac mini hooked to a ultra wide. I still like sitting at desk and using a big screen, usually have my 12.9 (and sometimes 10.5 for an added screen) on my desk while using my mini.

if it weren’t formy fancying big screens to work on, I wouldn’t have a mini (don’t really like iMacs due to having to replace the entire thing if bad or lack of monitor freedom). I can see myself going full iPadS. If only Final Cut Pro or photoshop (wasn’t it supposed to be out already?)were ported to iOs,

If only Apple updated the iPad so you had good external monitor support. That would be pure heaven

So you were trying to decide between MBP or iPP? Just curious, why didn’t you consider a middle option, the MacBook Air?

iPad Pro only here .. well actually three .. 1st gen 12.9, 2nd gen 12.9 (bought two weeks ago), and 2nd gen 10.5. I’d love to have bought the 2018 1tb with its 6gb ram .. but as a keyboard player, composer, arranger, the 2018 Pro’s just have too many issues, and IOS 13 does not connect with my Korg Bluetooth devices. My older Pro’s though with iOS 12 purr like a kitten in the studio here, and it’s been a long time since I booted up any of my desktops. Love the older iPad Pro’s obviously 👍🎹

I currently have a mid-2017 15" Macbook Pro 2.9ghz with 16gb ram and the higher end video card considering selling for an iPad Pro 12.9 (3rd Gen). I mainly use my laptop to study browse the web etc. My hobby is photography and videos from a Mirrorless Camera and a GoPro. I am strongly considering going iPad Pro only due to portability and performance even though it does not have a dedicated graphics card and I would be loosing 4 thunderbolt ports for 1 USB-C 10gbs. Any thoughts?

Any thoughts?
I'm in a similar situation, though desktop instead of laptop. But my main productivity uses with the iPP will be illustration mainly, photography and video (all as a hobby, using footage off a a7 III (hopefully one day)) and the rest will be general consumption. I'm really amateur and from the videos I've seen of Affinity Photo and LumaFusion will cover my needs. But what if I end up taking it more seriously? While I've used After Effects to do try basic compositing, motion graphics and tracking. It's not too big of a deal now, but that could change and I don't think there is an equivalent.

Those apps are hell bent at competing with Adobe apps and introducing more and more 'full pro' features to iPad. By the time you master them and grow in your hobby, whose to say that they won't have added these extra features to the apps? I think it's a question of when, not if, as I don't see why Affinity Photo / Designer and LumaFusion would come this far not to keep chasing after the rest of the 'pro' feature set. Just a thought to consider. The iPad and it's OS are making huge leaps every year at WWDC too, it can only keep getting better

That is a good point, which I should have thought about! Got plenty to learn, and working within certain restrains can let me focus on those areas rather than doing an average job of 'more'.

For now you could visit the apps website and read the list of features, and maybe see some YouTube tutorials showing someone actually doing a project to see the kind of workflow and spot any limitations that would possibly be an issue for you.

From what I can gather personally, apps like Serif Affinity Photo can not only do some things, but they can do them in seconds versus a 30 minute workflow. One pretty cool example is the inpainting brush, which can literally remove a cow from a field and artificially generate the missing background with scarily realistic accuracy!

Wanted portability/touch screen. Didn't want a full fledged "computer" so to speak. Plus, the iPad allows me to use the Pencil. I have the keyboard folio as well. Fit my needs. I have been down the MBP route twice - both times I bought top tier 13" and both times, I sold it within a year of buying it. Rarely using it. I'll use the iPad more than I ever will a MBP.

I didn’t mean why you chose the iPad over the MacBook Pro. I understand the iPad was a better fit. I just meant, it was curious to me that when you were trying to decide between the MacBook Pro and iPad, the MacBook Air wasn’t also a consideration since it sits somewhat between a MBP and iPad in terms of portability. In other words, rather than the MBPro, to me the MBAir seems like the closer competitor to an iPad.

Did you miss the part about the touchscreen? Last I checked, MacBook Airs suck at touchscreens...and the pencil.

I’ve been relying on my iPad Pro 12.9 (2018) as my 2013 rMBP is getting slower by the day. It needs replacement badly, but I have been waiting to see what’s coming this year.

In the meantime I have found myself using the iPad Pro 80% of the time (not including phone - just iPad to MBP). I’d go all iPad Pro if some of the apps didn’t suck. I can barely work on QuickBooks on the iPad, for example. There are a few others for my business that just haven’t been able to replace my laptop/desktop versions....yet.

Working in Excel can get a little tedious for me as well on the iPad.

I have gotten quite proficient at multitasking as well, but it just doesn’t compare to sitting at a 27” monitor with my spreadsheet, construction drawings, construction specs, takeoff software, Safari and Slack all ready to go at the click of a button when I’m hammering away at a bid proposal, for example.

I’m thinking, and hoping, that my next MBP will be my last, however. Bottom line is my 12.9” iPad Pro has exceeded my expectations as far as productivity goes overall.

I have a 2014 MBP and a 2018 iPP 12.9. I love the iPad to death, and I’m using it 90% of the time. That said, when I have to do any real work, spreadsheets, multiple tabs in safari, copying or referencing data between multiple windows, I swap to my MBP. Multitasking on MacOS with a touchpad is just so much more efficient. There’s also something to be said for the larger screen real estate on a 15” MBP let alone a desktop.

I would love to be able to do everything on the iPad, but it’s just not there yet for that slightly more intensive stuff. I’m not sure if it ever could be without launching something like Dex that’s on the Samsung tablets (basically a desktop-os-like mode).

Yeah, not sure what the question is. I thought I answered it? The air was considered but I wanted a single device, LTE, touch screen, pencil support, great battery life, etc. I didn't wan't a "computer". I wanted a tablet. It fit better for me.
