today's the 25th... my tracking's just changed to Walsh Western to deliver on the 24th
ok... got a bit more info from http://www.apecode.com/ - walshwestern.ie is useless BTW
but it's still clear as mud!

That's good. You will get your UPS tracking number either today or tomorrow. Then it will be about a day. I'd expect it Tuesday - Wednesday.

I got my tracking no. yesterday, and it's currently in Birmingham!

Good Luck!

Just opened it!!!!

Wow!

Was on holiday so have just opened (8:55am to be exact) my stock 2.16Ghz MBP, and my first ever Mac..

The bad news!!!

I've got two gripes already, which is sad considering what a beautiful machine it is!

  1. The lid is warped on the left-hand side as you look at it when closed - i don't know whether Apple are replacing them if this is a reason stated....????
  2. I got the 120GB Fujitsu HDD - will check the proper number and post it later...

Can anyone let me know if Apple will replace the machine if i'm unhappy with the 'warped' screen?

The Good News!!!

  1. Feels fast - you click & it goes (seems to be quicker at App loading than any PC i've used) :)
  2. Looks great - Apple folks have reason to be proud, and PC makers should be ashamed - ASHAMED!! :D
  3. Tidy stuff - i switched it on, went through the OS setup and was 'live' on the Desktop in less than 30 minutes :)

will post more later when i've finished the battery calibration :)

Nice one!

I wouldnt call that bad news at all. Most if not all MBPs have that small gap, so no I dont think they would replace it. Also, what is wrong with the Fujitsu? Ive been using mine with it for ages without any problems.

Hey,

I was hoping to get a Hitachi drive, as the Hitachis seem to have less of a bad reputation of failing on the user - maybe it is a resolved issue... Is your Fujitsu drive LinearMagneticRecording or PerpendicularMagneticRecording?

Back to setup..

I went over to my playpen where i'd left the toy charging up, and went over it again to check the edges etc..

  1. The screen is slightly 'warped' - apparently this is common. The reason i was 'iffy' about this is because i'd read somewhere on the forum that it could affect sleep settings if the lid doesn't close properly - is that the case..?
  2. The part of the case just above the button used to open the screen, and the part of the case just above the dvd-drive also seem slightly warped (pictures later).. Basically i can see the edges slightly sticking out of the little plastic/rubber grey seal that runs along the edge of the bottom half of the machine

I don't know whether these are things to worry about yet - the warped case parts now seem more obvious to me than the warped screen. :(

Just going through the battery calibration now - i won't really get to play properly until i get home later today, but i'll have pictures up soon.

  • Other than the little cosmetic things i've noticed, the package is very very nice. I need to find out whether there is an easy way to maximise window size (like in WinDoze), as i often prefer to work with apps that way..
  • Also, is there a setting that tells an application to remember the last window size it was set to?
  • One more thing - i also read somewhere on the forum that the volume did not automatically mute on the speakers when headphones were plugged in; is this a fault or has it been resolved?(new to Mac - forgive me  )

Annoyed with Apple

Still awaiting delivery, so I rang UPS, only to find that they have incomplete address details for me and then they tell me that my MacBook Pro may be delivered today.

Not happy.... at all.

I ordered mine on the 17th November and it arrived on the 27th November, this also included time at Daventry being paired up with Applecare.

Just got my stock 17" CD2!!!! My first mac!

It's really fast, I'm just learning how to use the damm thing, but, honestly it's great. + it has enough stuff for my school work & music!.

Not one problem at all (hardware wise) perfect screen, perfect lid, etc. etc. VERY quiet, warm, as all laptops are.

However, I *dy accent* renamed my house in finder, and it lost all my files, settings etc, as it created another profile. Doh!!! But it's all fixed, after copy over the profile etc.

Silly me...

Onwards!

I've set up OSX, and i've learnt a lot already about how Mac works, but i'm sure theres more to get..

I like...

  • The ease with which you can install/uninstall applications - Microsoft should be ashamed!!!
  • The intuitive way the OS seems to stitch everything together - you're not lost when you switch between applications like can be the case in Windows
  • The look - clean, nice, solid, smooth, shiny everything!!!
  • The speed - i'll say it every time i have to.. OSX feels faster than XP hands down. Apps launch and seem to go through work quicker... :D

Still wondering about...

  • Brightness settings in BootCamp - there seems to be a big jump in brightness about three or four knotches from the highest - is this something anyone else is seeing?
  • Maximising the active window - can anyone let me know if there is an easy way to do this?
  • The best recommended replacement for MS Office (preferably Freeware or Opensource)
  • Defragmentation/Optimisation (something we get used to under WinDoze - is this necessary in OSX, and how is it done?

I've gotten over my initial worries with the slightly-warped lid, as it seems to be common. It's a bit bitter to swallow at first when you consider how much you paid, but as you start to appreciate what you got for the money it sorta diminishes in importance.

BootCamp

I also went through the BootCamp setup yesterday, and that was interesting as well. Thrice during the setup process, the machine didn't reboot properly. I just switched it off using the power button, waited a few seconds and switched it on again, and off it went to complete the process.. Once it was finished, and all the drivers etc were installed, it started to behave itself :D

A few words to those intending on using BootCamp for a while, like me:

  • Don't get frustrated when certain key shortcuts don't work in BootCamp - this nearly had me pulling my hair out until i took the time to read through the forums. Most shortcuts need adapting to, but the most important one i discovered after hours of frustration is the replacement for the right-click on the MacBook Pro C2D - it's two fingers on the trackpad and then mouse-click. Forget key combinations; it works once you get to learn it, and it's not that bad :)
  • You'll find a few devices in Device Manager with the yellow questionmark after the installation of drivers is complete. I believe these are missing drivers for the infra-red and something else, which should come along soon. Windows update or driver roll-back will not find anything for them so leave 'em for now - you can probably do without this.
  • Maybe it's my eyes, maybe it's the screen, but 1440 X 900 in XP will catch you out until you employ ClearType (Display properties, Appearance, Effects). This will usually leave you with text that is better legible at that resolution.

Nice little review. I moved from XP to a miniG4 just over a year ago, and felt exactly the same way as you did. I will never go back to windows now.

Yes I do agree, that XP can be a little fruastrating at times, but its better then no windows at all, im sure you will agree. What I find myself doing, is after a year of using OSX, I always move the mouse to the right bottom corner to see my open screens (to use Expose) and when it does nothing, I realise and get really fruastrated haha but you will have to be using OSX for ages to doing that hehe. :D

My Top tip for any new OSX user is set up Expose properly. This is really what made it for me with OSX, as its so much easier to navigate windows in OSX. To see all your open windows is just a great idea and really is very useful. I suggest (what im using):

Bottom left corner: Dashboard
Top right corner: Go back to desktop
Bottom right corner (which I use the most): View open windows

Also, another little tip on the side, if you hold the apple or ctrl key and scroll, you can zoom in anywhere on the screen, which is really great if there is very small text you cant read (its great if your using an external keyboard and MM.

Also, if your using it on a desk alot, I recommend an icurve. They really help your posture and make the overall mac experience nicer (you will need and external mouse and keyboard though).
