C2D MBP arrived

Ordered on Nov. 2nd, arrived in the UK on Nov. 15th.

Sweet machine..! Coming from the 12" PB.. the thing is BIG! And heavy...

I still like the 12" (and am still using it). I probably would have bought a smaller than 15" MBP had it existed. I nearly always use an extra 17 inch LCD at home or work, so the small screen isn't such an issue.

The 867MHz of the PB were having a hard time with things, though.. something had to give.

I know how hard it is waiting and trying to piece together the various bits of tracking information based on the fragments of other people’s experiences. So here’s some summary notes of my own delivery that I hope will help as a point of comparison for you UK people still waiting for your own.

6/11: C2D MBP 2.33Gh 15” Matte 2Gb RAM 200Gb HD ordered by phone with HE discount.

Shipping date given: 9/11 Estimated delivery date given: 20-21/11. Other equipment also ordered, which is already in England and to be held in Daventry until MBP arrives from China.

9/11 Tracked on apecode.com as the order is going first to Daventry. Shipped on schedule from factory. Marked as flight booked for 12/11. ETA given as 16/11. (n.b. this most likely means delivery at European Distribution Centre, not on your doorstep)

13/11 Indicated flight departed. Apple order status remains unchanged

14/11 indicated as accept scanned at EDC

15/11 truck arrives at final destination (think this means Daventry.)

16/11 Apple tracking changed to indicate estimated delivery date of 15/11 (i.e. yesterday!) but delivery still to be on schedule. Walsh Western indicated as carrier. (n.b. it is not possible to track Walsh Western but…..)

16/11 (11.30 p.m.) carrier changes to UPS and new carrier number given, which can be tracked on UPS site (Track shipments).

17/11 Indicated on UPS site as out for delivery 5:15am

17/11 11.30am Arrives!!

Tracking works now

Question to those in the 'know'...

I've a friend whose major swinging factor to switching is the office-style suite that will be available to him, being a MS Office user at present. I'm personally gonna go with OpenOffice and see how works for me - is this recommended for someone who needs to keep working, or is it better to splash out on iWorks or MS Office for Mac?

:D :D :D

At least i can sorta see where the thing is now...

Still waiting..

printer rebate

As you know in the UK there's a 'free' (via rebate) £60 printer deal... as my 17"C2DMBP :) hasn't shipped yet :( I guess I could still add it on to the order, but you have to cut out the serial no label from the mac box to get the rebate and I'm thinkin that maybe that would complicate any returns policy? Anyone know if this is an issue? thanks

Not that I want to return my MBP but we are playing Russian roulette with the QC it seems..

Problems with the HE APP Uplift?

That's basically why I paid the extra 50 quid (+VAT) to get the "EMEA CC-HE Contract Uplift" which gives you full Applecare ie mail-in even though I probably won't need it (Applestore is nearby, and I do need the extra 50 quid (+VAT) to get a decent mouse!)

I've waited so long for this machine that I really want it to keep on keepin on

I'm not HE, but I talked the sales guy into giving me Applecare @ the college rate. In the documentation I received, I didn't get a registration number to enrol in applecare (as you normally do). Turns out that you are normally automatically enrolled in Applecare when you purchase a support contract (such as the HE uplift), but that is linked to the serial number of your computer.

I was correctly enrolled, but it was attached to the wrong serial number (apparently I was supposed to receive a different computer, and someone else has my, APP-eligible unit). So if you've bought APP via Higher Education, it might be worthwhile calling tech support and asking them to verify that you were enrolled correctly.

When you talk to them, re-iterate that you've purchased it (and that it appears on your invoice & delivery slip), and ask for them to confirm your policy / contract number. After about an hour on the phone to tech support, they figured out the problem, and said that my APP was being transitted to the serial number of the computer I actually have, but I'm not fully convinced. Seems like fairly messy back-office process. But if you have the policy number, you should be fine.

For those buying from the HE website, it could be that all the computers are auto-enrolled in it - I think I only got documentation because I bought it seperately. But it wouldn't hurt checking that you have, indeed, been enrolled correctly.

Capo - personally, (and unfortunately) MS Office is the standard. Although other office suites are compatible, they don't really compare. I use neo-office, and while its cool, and supposedly very similar in functionality, its just doesn't cut the mustard for me. Wish it did, though.

iWork is great, if all you need is Word & presentation tools, but if you want to be creating spreadsheets & databases, it won't be much help.

Unfortunately, even MS Office:Mac won't be a perfect solution: the next edition of office will not contain VBA, so macro's & vba scripting created on windows machines will not be useable on the mac. Still, if he wants to switch, and compatibility with his office is important, he could always run a small windows partition w/bootcamp and install office for windows on that.

Thanks for the heads-up... this is the sort of thing that's really worth sorting out before your machine needs the applecare to kick in  !

We'll probably be getting our machines the same day hehe.. I've got a 23rd or 24th delivery date, but i'm actuall hoping it arrives a little later like 27th becoz i'm away for a week

Have you owned a mac before?

Have you been reading the threads on bootcamp problems?
-------------------------------------------------------------

waiting for...

I haven't heard of Bootcamp problems, but I'm not sure if I'll use it. Parallels is fast enough for those times I need to pop into Win. This will be my 2nd MBP. I got my first in April and it was great until the gfx card fan / logic board problems appeared. I sent it back to be repaired. I also asked them if they could replace the case as it had black dots appearing all over it. 5 weeks later they had no ETA on a new case so they gave me a refund and I was able to get this new 2.16ghz model. Free speed bump :D

I just got the email saying its shipped today. Nothing on TNT's site yet. I love tracking new toys across the world :D

I don't know who's your assigned carrier, but Apecode doesn't work for me, I have to use TNT's tracking.
Thanks for the response.

I understood that Kuehne+Nagel (tracked vias apecode) dealt with the shipping generally from China to EU/ UK then it gets passed onto TNT. I saw a few times it went with TNT all the way though.

I tried TNT web site too but it said 'not found'. How long did you wait for it to show on the NT site from shipping email?

Has anyone seen the new MacBook Pros on independent reseller shelve

Living in Jersey, I am restricted to buying from my local reseller or via mail order. Opting for the reseller option as it is actually cheaper, I have not yet managed to get hold of one as the reseller have not been able to get hold of any.

Indeed looking at the availability of sites like Jigsaw and InMac there doesn't seem to be any availability at independent resellers.

I emailed the sjobs apple.com address about the situation and got a call back to say that there were machines on resellers shelves already. I told the guy who called me that I was sure that there maybe machines in Apples own stores, but there didn't appear to be any arriving at independent stores, though he was adamant that they had arrived in independent stores.

Wanting to give the guy the benefit of the doubt, can anyone post a reply if you have seen a new C2D MacBook Pro at a reseller, other than Apple's own stores.

Its all the more frustrating as I tried placing an order at the apple store on the 24th Oct, minutes after the site came back up to be told I had to go through my reseller but I would be able to get a machine at the same time, this way. Not that I believed that, but I didn't think that nearly a month later I would have no idea of when i would actually get the machine I have ordered through my reseller!

Regards, Michael

I don't know who's your assigned carrier, but Apecode doesn't work for me, I have to use TNT's tracking.

My understanding is that if you have only ordered something that has to come from China (say a single MBP) then it will be shipped by TNT (or whoever) direct and you won't be able to track it on apecode. But if you have an order that is going to be merged with other stuff that is already in the UK, then it will all go to Daventry first using Flextronics. Then you can track from China to Daventry on apecode. Once it's in Daventry the apecode tracking will stop and transfer to the new carrier who'll be delivering to your door.

Hi Michael,

I'm on the rock as well, in the same boat as you, ordered mine at iQ on the 27th. Was expecting to have had it by now, but nothing so far! Could've done with it at the beginning of next month, but I'm not holding my breath any more, just have to wait.

Quick question for all you UK MBP purchasers: when it arrives with the courier, is it just in the MBP box or is the whole thing packed inside an outer box along with any other stuff you've ordered?

So from this we can infer that it takes 3 days to get from Arnhem (where my 17" MBP was yesterday) to be delivered in the UK.

So mine could be here the day after tomorrow. It's been a long wait (almost a month since ordering), so I hope that it's going to be worth it.

Still waiting for the MBs. One arrived in Holland yesterday, the other was shipped on 15th, but a consignment number has not been issued. Does anyone know why a consignment number not been issued after 6 days? I find it bizzare.

Judging by the number of shipping delays that we've all been seeing over the last couple of weeks, I don't think that TNT have the capacity to handle all these concurrent releases and the huge demand. Perhaps it would have been better if Apple had left a at least a few weeks between each model released (or perhaps not, it's nice to have them all in one go).
