I've now had five new phones in my cart and have canceled an order for both the 12 (black) and 12 Pro (graphite). I absolutely love the new form fact but outside of that there's nothing that appeals to me in this upgrade. Like many of you, this will be the first year I haven't upgraded. I say it every year and have always ended up with a new phone but this time I really mean it.

2016 MacBook Pro, 2019 11'' iPad Pro, iPhone X.

All working fine (mostly) nothing enticing me enough to upgrade any of it. MBP having some screen issues but I'll ride it out and see what the ARM Macs bring. the iPhone, im interested in the new form factor and screen size from the latest models, but not enough. Performance still good.

I’m not. My XS is in perfect shape, and as much as I really want the new cameras there’s little else pushing me to upgrade. Since it’s a new design, I’d like to give it a generation before I jump, and I’m hoping they move to USB-C. I just upgraded to the 2020 iPad Pro, and my 2013 MacBook Pro is getting due for a replacement. So I’d prefer to have all of them on the same connector ideally.

Still on my 11Pro Max, battery life is still 97%, and still fast. Don't see the need for upgrade yet, until 5G gets more widespread, maybe the only thing I'm looking forward to.

I know I keep saying the same things here but I am really torn. The camera upgrade, new blue color, of the 12 pro max are VERY, VERY tempting to me. Like I said, I run a freelance media marketing company on the side and shoot videos for different clients from time to time. I have used my 11 pro max ( 4K ) instead of my DLSR or mirrorless cameras sometimes and nobody could tell the difference (sometimes the iphone footage looked better). So the 12 Pro having Dolby Vision HDR recording is a pretty big deal for video and and even photography folks too as well as Lidar.

But I am trying to hold out since I just got my 11 pro max (256 GB) last year and it's paid off in full. I keep telling myself that if the 12 pro max's camera is this impressive, imagine the upgrade the iphone 12 S or iphone 13 next year. Plus it will have the added benefits of all the growing pains of 5G out of the way and 120 HZ.

But honestly, in feb 2021 I might bite the bullet and upgrade or if we get another stimulus check LOL. If not I will wait to fall.

I do like FaceID, however, with masks becoming a feature for at least a year or longer (even with vaccination available there is a huge question about amount of doses, willingness to get vaccinated and a general move towards more asian attitude towards masks) it is really cumbersome to use. So i would like the option of having two biometric unlock features available, which yes, does cost money of course. Using a secure code (i use at least 12 number codes) is not really a fun thing.
I can get on board with having both TouchID and FaceID on the same device. However, I see two problems with Apple implementing it on the iPhone 13, etc. Cost being big. The 5G modems, antennas, etc must already be slicing at the margins, but also, I think, at least a small number of critics would ask, "Why have both on a single device if TouchID is good enough?" or something along those lines. The second one Apple probably couldn't care less

I have an 11, so its basically new. Also here in Canada we have very few options to lower the price of these things. I tend to buy the device from Apple, and I have a $45 plan for 2 GB from Koodo. I tend to use my phone for three years before I replace it. I'm planning to do the same this time.

I could see Apple releasing different versions of the iphone 12 S or iphone 13 or iphone 14. One version with touch ID and one with FaceID. This would be a compromise to to give fans a choice like they are doing with screen sizes.

Now that I've seen a few reviews out in the wild, am sticking with my decision to keep my 8+. The new iphones are nice. And I like the Pacific Blue color especially. But not nice enough to make me go buy one when my 8+ still suits my needs very well.

The only one that *might* make me jump off the fence is the mini. I like the idea of having a large (enough for me) screen size and a smaller form factor. Will wait and see when it gets reviewed. But I still think I shall sit this one out for another year.

Posted elsewhere that I have the 12 Pro ordered to replace my 11 Pro Max but I am still 50/50, luckily despite pre-odering at 1:05pm mine is not due till next week so I have time for further procrastination.

Only reason I pre-ordered was wanting to go to a smaller phone but now I am having second thoughts on that. I have used a droid for most of the last year so my Pro Max is immaculate with 100% battery health, kind of feel I'd be stupid to get rid of it. Lidar for better autofocus is the most compelling upgrade actually but in reality that will probably not be as great as it looks.

Also whilst I really really like the squared off look appearance wise I am worried it will be less comfortable as I am little finger balancer! Last time I had a squared off phone it dug in.

I have heard about the XS series having bad reception. Kind of glad I skipped that gen.

I went from 8 plus on att to XS max on t-mo and reception improved. and with the merger it's even better in some low signal places I've had issues before

Since it’s paid in full, why not do a trade in for a Sim free version or just sell the 11 Pro Max on Swappa? That will help bring the cost down on the 12 Pro Max. But, I totally understand your need to budget.

I'm someone who tents to upgrade and/or switch platforms nearly every year. Previously I had an iPhone XS Max, currently I have a Pixel 4XL.

I'm severely tempted to get myself a 12 Pro Max (getting one for the wife for sure). However, the logical part of my brain is telling me I don't need another upgrade. Being completely honest with myself, even the XS Max did everything I needed very well.

XS Max has no issues. Same/Better Than my X.

No they don't. It's your carrier/location.

It’s not the carrier because my neighbors upstairs have excellent coverage and signal on their android phones that have Qualcomm modem and they have the same carrier that my fiancé and I have. Everybody’s experience hasn’t been the same so you can’t say they don’t have any issues if your device isn’t.

As a person who complained a lot about the Intel VS Qualcomm thing, I get this. My Qualcomm Android devices always get better coverage with the same carrier. That was the only thing that made me ponder the 12 series iPhones. However, my coverage never drops so it's not bad enough I feel desperation.

I’ve been dealing with the random dropped calls, disconnect from WiFi and spotty connection for the last 19 months, so I’m desperate to upgrade. My fiancé isn’t having as many issues on his 11 Pro Max as I am on my XS Max.

I did get an XS for a few days but reverted back to my 7 Plus. I experienced horrible reception, data drops, etc just like you. Thankfully this 11 Pro Max is stable. It might not be the best chip but it's better than the X/XS line was (Regardless of 2x2 or 4x4 MIMO from what I've read).

I just googled what modem is in the XS/XS Max and got this:

This probably explains why the modem in the XS/XS Max suck.
