yeah i am another macbook pro user frustrated with this lack of quality engineering and assistance from apple. this is the first problem i have run into with them in 10 years however, so i guess i can let it slide. unless they dont fix it. then ima open up a can of whoop ass...

I too have this problem on my 2.4ghz Penryn MBP. Blizzard/Apple, please fix this!

So I used Pacifist and installed the kexts and related files for Nvidia from the Leopard Graphics update. I just clicked "Install" in Pacifist and then chose overwrite. Rebooted... Diablo didn't work. Graphics were crazy slow in the whole OS (bad).

I tried again. This time I DELETED all the originals first (they are directories really) then clicked the install button in Pacifist to re-install and rebooted.

This time I have the greyed out 256 color mode and Diablo is offering the option to start up again. I'm attaching a snap of the files I replaced to get it working.

Been lurking these boards for a while but needed to register to thank you for this. I also needed to delete the files before installing from Pacifist. Thanks!!

(oh yeah, 800x600, eww!! :p)

what's the chance that this will run better under vmware fusion? i'm not too confident about its performance but it's got to be better than not running at all

read the posts!

guys, there's a solution! Just read up a few posts, it'll fix your problem, and it takes all of about 5 minutes (including the download).

I replaced the files mentioned on the previous page with Pacifist on my Pennryn 17" 2.6GHZ hi-res with 512MB 8600m GT. Worked like a charm. 256 color option came back grayed out like it is on my Mac Pro tower and Diablo II loads up fine. I backed up the "GEFORCE" and "NVDANV" files from the extensions directory first so I can easily replace them with the original if I ever need to.

I assume this solution would probably fix the horrible framerate issues users were having with World of Warcraft and nvidia cards after updating to 10.5.3/10.5.4 also, but I never updated past 10.5.2 on any of my macs for that reason.

I tried this and it works, is playable but the sound is not working. Every now and then the cursor would go insane and break into pieces in Direct3D mode. DirectDraw was a bit better. Still I would prefer it to work natively.

I'm at work and the Time Capsule is at home, so I had to do this with no backups available. Of course I didn't read the instructions properly and used pacifict to default install the whole leopard graphics update. This didn't work at all and now many apps that want to access something from the video card are crashing. iChat, Aperture, I'm sure more.

So now I am backing everything up to my external firewire 800 drive and will do a fresh retail install of 10.5.1 and upgrade to 10.5.2. Once I have D2 working I may try the update to 10.5.4 and then use time machine to reload the old drivers. Or I might just wait it out on 10.5.2 until the re-release some acceptable drivers.

i just tried the 'fix' rather than fixing anything it caused my display to take on a blue tint and to cease recognizing my external monitor...

Ok I installed the files from Pacifist and I experienced the same problem, slow graphics in all of OS. My question is what do you mean deleting the files? As in the ones from the extensions file or the ones that I made a backup of?

Just backup/delete the files in the Extensions directory that start with "geforce" or "NVDANV". After doing that only install those files from the Leopard Graphics Update package. No need to install anything else. Just highlight those files, right click, and choose to install to default location.

Thanks, that seemed to have worked. But I cannot help but feel that my OS is running a tad slower than it did before. How could I reinstall the old drivers (or I guess, new drivers) if I wanted? I still have them backed up on my computer.

Just delete the same files and copy over the ones you backed up again. It'll just ask for the admin password. Then reboot.

I am glad this is helping some, I kinda regret posting means to do this now that I am seeing people having problems.

I feel for you. Since I asked for steps to do this.

It sucks that Apple made an update that takes away features graphics wise, and having to resort to hacks that I thought I happily left behind in the Windows world.

A positive note: this shows how the Hackintosh community can be good to Apple, by providing workarounds to problems Apple is not fixing. :)

To readers intending to use this:
This is a HACK! It is going to break your Mac! Back up, back up and back up once again!

So has anyone tried this hack with the newer Penryn-chipped iMacs/MBPs?

EDIT: Nevermind, I just saw the sig of one the users that tried it who has a Penryn MBP.

deleting/installing those nvidia files worked a treat on my 2.4 Ghz Merom MBP. Worked perfectly first time. Thank you so much!

I'm no graphics expert, but since these older games are trying to initialize a 256 color mode, couldn't Blizzard make a patch that allows, optionally, for the game to initialize a 16-bit color mode, while still using a 256 color palette? Isn't it possible to 'open' a high color mode but use a lower bit palette? It's kind like Windowed mode, your desktop is 32-bit and the game running in the window is still using 256 colors, etc.

There's no 16-bit colour mode either. That was not even present when the first Santa Rosa MacBooks with Intel GMA X3100 came out.

What I understand about colour modes is that the 256-colour mode is "indexed". Meaning that the programs refer to an index of colours to choose from. It's probably not too hard to create a list of 256 colours and link it to the equivalent colours on the 24-bit colour plane.

If Blizzard would patch their games, that's great! If only Apple will fix this silly bug.

In point of fact we are working on a patch for this, however that won't fix any existing copies in the field (such as what is on the CD's in the store or online installer).

Great to hear. Sort of related, is there any way to install Diablo II for mac if I have the 1.0 version of the discs, the ones with no mention of mac support on them? The easy solution is to go out and buy a newer copy, but I am loathe to do this, why should I have to rebuy the game? :(. $9.99 is a lot, and some shops are selling it for $20! I bought Diablo II right when it came out, and now I pay the price. hmmmpf.

Their was a way but is been many years so I cant remember at all.

But while I was trying to get my ancient copy updated I did see carbon installers that wanted CD key etc on Blizzards support site. Perhaps you could use those? I didnt go that route as found my Game cd before I found the plastic case that it should have been in.

As for the performance issues I havent done any investigation but i did find it amusing that it appears to run the same on my >2Ghz imac as it did on my 400mhz cube back in the day. Playable but with some hitching.

You can use your CD key on our online store to DL a new installer at no charge.
