How can i start the game in windowed mode? I know, i can switch by pressing cmd + m but the game crashes immediately after starting, so there is no time to switch.

Broked!

I tried the fix here and my MacBook will no longer let me log on! It just freezes at the weird starry splash screen that comes right as you log on to the computer. Help!
I had the Intel GMA 3100 thing to replace. I moved the 6 files to a folder on my desktop and did default install on the same 6 from 10.5.2 through Pacifist.
I then tried to restart and this happened.
I have a white MacBook

EDIT: I fixed it by booting in Safe Mode and undoing everything I did. While I was in Safe Mode, though, I tried opening StarCraft and it worked! No sound, though. After restarting with the original AppleIntel files put back, my MachBook works, but StarCraft and Diablo II are still doing the same thing-- Starcraft boots for a second and then automatically quits, and Diablo 2 quits unexpectedly before opening anything. I'm going to mess around with each individual file and see if I can find a combination that lets me use my computer AND SC/D2.

EDIT 2: After installing the four files from the Graphics Update 1.0 that weren't .bundle files, StarCraft starts up and D2 goes to a black screen. Better than before. I'm going to try playing StarCraft.

EDIT 2.5: I also get an error about the AppleIntelGMAX3100.kext being improperly installed, and that it will not run. Hmm...

EDIT 3: StarCraft single player works perfectly. I'll test bnet later tonight.

EDIT 3.5: I can't test bnet because I pirated the CD key... Oh well.

In conclusion, replacing just these 4 files

AppleIntelGMAX3100.kext
AppleIntelGMAX3100FB.kext
AppleIntelGMAX3100GA.plugin
AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext

worked for me. Replacing these and the two .bundles caused my computer to be unable to start properly and required a Safe Boot to undo the changes.

FINAL EDIT (I swear): I just had to change the renderer in Diablo II from OpenGL to Software to get it to work. StarCraft and Diablo II both work now, thanks guys!

The only way that I managed to get the "was not properly installed" error was when I didn't keep the same permissions. If you used Pacifist, make sure the tick box "Use Administrative Privileges" is ticked, otherwise the error you have can be displayed and it will not work.

I think repair permissions in Disk Utility does fix this.

How did you manage to tell it to change the renderer, i tried the same process as you did.. happily it didn't break the OS, but i can't bring the setup screen for diablo up, even when holding command while opening the program

Because you need to hold the OPTION key

It just automatically came up when I started the program. If I tried to open Diablo 2 in OpenGL mode, a black screen would come up and would ding when I clicked the mouse. Had to command-option-esc to get out.

Also, for some reason, repairing the permissions totally broke my OS. Wouldn't even get to the log-in screen. Safe Mode woulnd't work either; I had to reinstall OS X from a DVD.

Okay, so I tried out a few things. First off, here is my rig:

Model Name: MacBook
Model Identifier: MacBook
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.1 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz

I started off by extracting the files from the LGU that were mentioned in the first guide in this thread (page 3), and it appeared to start up normally. I got to log in, but once my PW was entered, the screen stayed blue. I was forced to start into safe mode. I downloaded the MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.4.DMG from Apple's website to undo what I did. I replaced them, and then as the poster said a few posts above this one, I replaced all the proper files with the LGU X3100 files again, but untouching the bundles. I then restarted, to get stuck before my login screen. I again, had to reboot into safe mode. I replaced the newly replaced X3100 from LGU with the OSXUpd10.5.4 'modern' extensions and was successful in restarting back into OSX, but alas, D2 does not work. I am in the same state that I was before I did anything with this, simply because, I now have the same files.

Any ideas what went wrong?

The files I first replaced were:

AppleIntelGMAX3100.kext
AppleIntelGMAX3100FB.kext
AppleIntelGMAX3100GA.plugin
AppleIntelGMAX3100GLDriver.bundle
AppleIntelGMAX3100VADriver.bundle
AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext

After that failed, I reinstalled the modern extensions, and then replaced:

AppleIntelGMAX3100.kext
AppleIntelGMAX3100FB.kext
AppleIntelGMAX3100GA.plugin
AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext

And would not get to the login.

However, Diablo II did run in safe mode.

Any help would be awesome.

Funny, what ever i do, no matter what command or option key combo i use it just crashes instantly

Did you remove the old files first? The files are folders - meaning they may not copy properly (or leave remnants of the old files behind) if they are not moved or deleted first.

Also, what is safe mode? I was always under the impression that safe mode was single user mode with a command prompt only? What startup key combo gives safe mode or do I just need to start an X window session in single user mode?

Sounds as though you do not have 256 colours support enabled in your drivers. Did you try installing the older drivers? See if a greyed out 256 colors option appears in the colour selection drop down in the Displays preference pane. If not, they are not installed correctly.

Synorax, D2 behaved the same way for me before I installed my old 10.5 from the boot disc. I had no greyed-out 256 colors option, and now I do. If you have it, you can just reinstall an earlier version of Leopard.

I do not have an OSX disk. I bought my macbook a few weeks ago and it came preinstalled with 10.5

Okay, here's an update. I removed all the required files (including bundles) and installed the older ones from the LGU and my computer successfully started up. I opened Diablo II. I got to the splash options page. I can not run the game right now because I never applied the files from the cd to play without the LOD disc, but it looks as if it will work now! :D:apple:

Kudos to whoever found this fix!

PS. Macbook 2.1GHz Penryn

Still having issues

I picked up my mbp in June, 2007 and it has the ATI card. I updated to 10.5.4 in the normal course of use. A few days ago I decided to install D2 and am having a similar problem to many here (Installed D2, patched to 1.12a, and it crashes immediately with a KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE).

It sounds like many of the fixes that have been suggested work great for NVidia chipsets, any hope for those of us with ATI?

PS - everything is completely updated, Leopard Graphics Updates applied, etc.

Just thought I'd mention I also had the same issues described above on my MBA. I followed the links/files from Page 1 or 2 and everything works great now - it even works in OpenGL/millions of colors.

To the poster before me, I don't think the fix is only for nvidia chipset per se (MBA has Intel graphics), but the drivers seemed to allow the game to start up correctly in software mode. Once the game was able to start, I was immediately able to switch to OpenGl and it ran fine.

Good luck! Still my favorite game of all time, and having played it the past few days I remember why :)

If the Console application (in the Utilities folder) report Diablo as throwing and exception of type EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS), this fix may help you. I don't think the installer covers ATi drivers, but following the same processes with Pacifist, it may help.

So, I think what it is is that Nvidia graphics work perfectly after the fix, and Intel GMA require some tinkering?

Got it fixed. Here's how.

Ok, so I'm not used to my mac enough to try replacing files on my own. I was very frustrated when I couldn't get Diablo 2 to install on my MacBook Air, preventing me from slacking off at work to a ridiculous level. So, I emailed Blizzard. They told me to use the installer, I let them know that I already had, and got nothing. I was having the issue where the disc pops out and the installer doesn't read it. so Blizzard had me download the game from their site, using my cd keys. The download was a success, and I was able to install finally!! yeah!!! But then, failure. Just got the stupid "ignore, send" error. I emailed a response to Blizzard, and they replied with this link. http://70.181.80.166:82/blog/archives/2008/07/mac-os-10531054-nvidia-256-colors.html I clicked the link, downloaded the installer for the previous video drivers, and miraculously Diablo 2 works now. I have to use software rather than OpenGL, but no big deal there. Hope this helps everyone.

That helps alot thanks!

How do you figure out which one to use? I don't know anything about graphics cards :p

I have to use software rather than OpenGL
That shouldn't be the case. In System Profiler under Graphics information, is Core Image - Hardware Accelerated and Quartz Extreme - Supported?

I have had both the intel GMA X3100 and the nVidia GeForce M 8600GT running Diablo with OpenGL.

I just bought a macbook pro and its 10.5.2 but when i go to display there is only thousands and millions. I tried installing diablo and it worked but when i open it always says the application quit unexpectedly. I'm a n00b and i dont really get what all the things you guys are sayin g so what should i do?
Thanks

IT WORKS! For anyone with the "quit unexpectedly error message".

I just bought a black macbook last week, and I wanted to run Diablo II, but was having the same issues as most people are having with their macbook pros. New to macs, I was not comfortable replacing files on my own.

After days of flipping through forums, I finally found this message which solved my problems. The link is easy to use, and supposedly (I have not tried yet) it is easy to revert back to usual settings.

I guess the usual "user beware" is implied, but it worked for me.

Thanks jhihad for posting this link! I couldnt resist joining the forum just to thank you!

Glad to help

For anyone who's had luck with the link I provided, I'm just happy to spread the joyous feelings of slaughtering zombies and other monsters that Blizzard was able to provide me with.
