Seeing how many people keep mentioning they could just tap their phones and wake them up, I wonder if this is a split between those of us who are more into 'battle station' setups than others might be.

At work, I use a dual screen setup, and also in my line of vision is my work phone with a display to see who is calling, then my wall clock and calendar. I turn my head slightly one way and there's my whiteboard with my daily and weekly priorities. Glance down the other way and there's my personal phone, that, as soon as I upgrade, will let me see my notifications when I look at it.

A blank screen/area is a wasted screen/area to me.

I wouldn’t be against it and would be useful at night to check how long I have to get up but bet that light would annoy me. Certainly the misses

During the day? That’s what my watch is for

Its hard to visually explain it for someone that hasn't used the feature on another device before. There's no "light" or anything that attracts attention to the screen unless you're looking at it. Only way I can visually put it is -imagine a mirror that dimly displays the time and notifications you have pending. Some folks have used LCD over OLED so long they are imagining the entire screen is backlit instead of just the data that is displayed.

No, don’t need it when it’s in my pocket. Maybe in the winter to heat my thigh.

I’ve had it before and my partner has an S8 and she can’t stand it. Thinks it’s pointless. And yes the light is still noticeable at night

Tap to wake in darker environments though can be a bit hard on the eyes at times, AOD allows glances at time, even info from other apps without touching the phone. Why light up the whole screen if you can just glance.

Yeah it's useful. Especially in the morning when you wanna check info and don't wanna be blinded. Useful to just see your battery% at a glance or what type of notifications you have. Useful to glance down at your phone and see exactly what song is playing on the radio or commercial or movie without having to do anything.

Pretty ingenious use of an oled screen. I'd give up 2% battery for that.

Yes, having that option would be nice. There are times when I need to see the time and have something in my right hand so I can't touch the screen and the darn display won't turn on when I raise my left hand. Frustrating!

Such a horrible statement. You obviously haven't researched AOD at all. It uses pretty much no energy.

Once again someone who thinks because they haven't used it before that it is useless...

Yuck. No. I don’t want my display always on, on phone or watch.
And if implemented correctly, you could turn it off if you don't want it. That doesn't mean we shouldn't have the OPTION to turn it on.

Then turn it off. There is a setting...

Um, hello. The question was, would I want it. And my answer was, no, I wouldn’t.

Not sure why you assume that means I don’t think anyone else should have it as an option.

dont waste your time explaining things to some here..... IF its not on iphone its just sucks and useless but when it finally shows up then its the greatest thing since sliced bread.......

Coming from a GS8, GS9 and then from a Note 9 I can say every time I switch back to iPhone the biggest thing I miss is AOD. It comes in handy more times than not. Pixel shifting will stop burn in issues. Being able to just glance at my phone seeing if I have any missed notifications is extremely nice. Yea you could have a Apple Watch but I don’t wear it around the house. I just think AOD will be a nice option for those of us that have used it on android and a welcome feature for those who have not used it before.

People want to feed the addiction... "OMG have I missed something?" "Why hasn't so-so responded yet?"
I'm surrounded by clocks, I have an Apple Watch. There's no need

And besides, if it's always on.. that means *everyone* that can see the screen can see whats *on* the screen.

i love responses like these b/c its very clear you've never even seen an always on display and yet want to talk about how it "works"

it doesnt show any personal info so why do you care if other people see it? "OMG PEOPLE CAN SEE MY BATTERY %!"

Fair enough... If implemented like Android then it only shows icons of your notifications. Not the actual messages/emails/alerts.

Again - I get why some people might not like it, but it would be a nice option. Pretty sure I'll adjust without it on my Max. I got by just fine back when I had my 6s Plus.

The Pixel 2 just spoiled me with it. It was nice to be at my desk or in a meeting and be able to just have my phone out on the table and glance at the time and see if any emails/messages came in without having to physically touch my device. Can I just tap it? Yeah... but sometimes I don't want someone to know I'm peeking at the clock hoping for the meeting end-time to finally arrive. :D

I would like an always on display that is enabled by proximity only. Meaning I don't want the display to be on while it is in my pocket but on while on a desk or dock.

Where in my post did I say it’s not switched off? My point was about the light...it’s nice to have the option obviously but I don’t see this is something apple will add.

it ATTRACTS everyone to look at your screen.
The main point is the addiction aspect that everyone praising it is showing.. even if you don't know it.
and yes, 2 people at work have it on their crap phones, They are constantly watching it. I'd say about every 15 seconds they glance over at it, and the second something comes in... the grab the phone. Pure addiction.
