it ATTRACTS everyone to look at your screen.
The main point is the addiction aspect that everyone praising it is showing.. even if you don't know it.
and yes, 2 people at work have it on their crap phones, They are constantly watching it. I'd say about every 15 seconds they glance over at it, and the second something comes in... the grab the phone. Pure addiction.
What’s different between that and people waking up the phone to see if they have a missed notification. It comes in handy when you missed a call or text. Just glance over at the phone and see a missed call then you can unlock the phone to see who it was,or if no notification is shown I continue to walk by the phone and not even touch it.

iPhones in my pocket or in my backpack. Screen time is hilarious, i picked my iPhone up 4 times ALL day yesterday.

I really loved AOD when I had my Galaxy S8. I miss that feature a lot. Apple is wasting that OLED screen by not implementing AOD on both the OLED iPhones and the Watch.

i was really hoping with iOS 12 we’d finally get the Always On Display for the XS/XS Max. With a OLED Display I just can’t see why Apple has yet to even test it in a beta iOS.

Not really fussed to have always on screen... while its nice to have it isnt a necessity
Apple will only put a function out if it benefits everyone usually...

I’m sure this of you really wanted to have a clock should have a stand alone clock for the task... it’s a phone... I want it **** off at night! End of store, if I need to have a clock, then I’ll buy one and put it next to my bed!

For myself, not interested.

I like that screen to be nice and off until I want it on.

At the moment, it catches my attention when it comes on and I can see that if for whatever reason it stayed on, it wouldn't catch my attention near as much. And the only time I have the screen facing up is when I want the screen turning on to catch my attention.

Relax........... The brightness is very low on AOD.....The display (clock, notification if any) will turn on against a black background if I move my hand over my phone...... and within seconds will disappear.

If I have to move my hand over to AOD... then might of just tap to wake it...

You can schedule when to have your aod on.

Apple is probably saving this feature for Xss or XI or XIs :)

Personally, having also used Samsung S and Note devices, I do not miss the AOD (though I would welcome it). Whenever I raise the phone, the display turns on anyway or I just need to tap the display. But I can understand that people want AOD when they just want to look at the phone while its on the desk.

You don't need to move your hand over it. The point of an always on display is that it's "ALWAYS ON". unless you want it off b/c Android actually gives you options. I have mine on from 7am to midnight. After that it automatically turns off between those times.

It can be debated that leaving the clock in “Always on state” would actually use less battery than someone that checks the time quite frequently by tapping to wake the entire display, even with a pure black background. No way to measure this, but the difference wouldn’t be that great and either way the battery usage throughout a full charge would be negligible.

Having said that, I did like having it on a Samsung I used a few years ago docked like a clock on a wireless charger. Being able to peek at the clock while working and not stopping workflow to check the time is nice. It’s also great as a bedside clock.

Look like people here dont understand how AOD works.....
It’s not that they don’t understand.

It’s mostly the fact people don’t want to admit Android does have some great options available. And that is all Always On is. An option.

I think people are still in self denial and inner rage that Apple took away the battery percentage indicator option from them. So now that Apple hasn’t implemented a simple option such as AOD, they are defending Apple’s decision to the end. :)

I am an Apple loyalist. I love and use many of its products. I will admit there are a lot of small features Apple could implement to appease the current users and maybe even attract some Android users to increase its user base. Just sayin’.....

Wow a lot of ignorance in this thread about how Always On Display works and the benefits of it. I've had several phones with it going back to the Nokia glory days and most recently with the Pixel 2 and it's the biggest thing I miss when I switch to iPhone. How anybody can claim that waking the entire screen every time a notification comes in or having to tap the screen/hit the power button to show the time is somehow superior to just glancing at the phone without touching it is beyond me.

Apple does many things right with iPhone (obviously) but I guess some people just don't want to admit that sometimes they're not the best with some things and other manufacturers have ideas that are better.

AOD barely uses any battery at all, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if the battery hit every time the screen wakes for a notification or a time check would match any extra battery drain an AOD might cause. When it's in your pocket the ambient light sensor turns off AOD anyway. Not only that but with Android phones you can turn off the AOD if you don't like it or you can customize the AOD to turn off at a certain time if you're going to bed. My Lumia Windows phones even let you shift the colour of the text if you wanted something dimmer but didn't want it completely off.

Hopefully we'll see AOD come to the iPhone X/XS/XS Max. Tap to wake pleasantly surprised me when I got my XS. So who knows!

EDIT: I don't know how I missed Steve686's post above mine, but I said a lot of what he said and I agree with him.

This is sort of where I am at the moment. I've been a cell phone enthusiast since I was able to afford to buy my own phones. I've used all mobile OS's including Windows Phone, WebOS, Android and iOS. My first go with iOS was the iPhone 4s. Decent phone but I got bored quickly so I went ham jailbreaking etc. I didn't use iPhone after that for years because to an enthusiast like me the iPhone was just too restricted and lacked features that I like. But then Apple started slowly adding things that I took for granted with other phones. Finally putting cameras that were worth a damn compared to other flagships, wireless charging, water resistance etc. So last year in a spur of the moment decision I bought the iPhone 8 on launch day. At first I thought I'd try for a few months then get bored and sell it... Never sold it, and it ended up being my daily driver. Now here I am with an iPhone XS.

As a former Android guy who hasn't TOTALLY jumped over the fence completely yet, AOD would probably push me over for good.

You can set it to automatically switch off like DND on the Samsung phones!

Yes, I was Apple had a version of AOD.

I don’t think it’s a battery issue but more of screen burn-in issues with OLED

The thing is, Samsung panels really don’t struggle with Image retention either. And ironically, the iPhone X uses a Samsung OLED panel. In theory, it’s just Apple making the decision not to allow an always on dispay, when they potential could.

Think not so simple. To implement AOD effectively (i.e with battery efficiency), I think you need additional screen hardware chip to control the turning on/off small portion of screen.

No one is debating how ‘simple’ it is, we are indicating that Apple is choosing not to use an always on display, when they could. Its a matter of them utilizing a feature That has been used by Samsung for years.

Simple reason apple wants to save cost and make more profit. They chose to buy the screen that didn't include the aod support.

I honestly don’t see the point.

Between the Apple Watch and asking Siri if I have any notifications...what’s the point again?
