Nope, not only a pointless feature but also very annoying too

Imagine having it on your bedside table at night, it would be so annoying in a dark room. Literally cannot fathom why anybody would want this, or comprehend what any possible advantage would be

Pointless to you maybe. I don’t have any clock in my room. My phones serve as my clock. I like to be able to just glance at my phone when I’m very sleepy, to see if it’s time to wake up. Also at work I keep it at my station, and it serves as my clock there as well. It’s a feature that you can turn off or on for those that are very annoyed by such an option.

I think at some point, at least with me, where there is no more wishing. Apple is extremely lazy and I think my $ should be spent elsewhere. If you're charging $1000 for the XS w/ software that looks the same from 7 years ago, then what effort do you need to give?

Used to have it with Nokia, I guess it was vaguely useful? Not earth shattering though. Apple finally introduced what I wanted from Nokia's past (double tap to wake) with the X series phones, unfortunately it also took away touch ID at the same time :p

absolutely.
it's a very useful feature and when I had a Samsung Note 8,I really liked it.
now owning an Xs Max I really miss it and just don't understand why iPhone is always behind times.
a simple always on clock, instead of having to tap on the phone is a good reason by its own.

had it a few years back when I owned a Note 7 for a while and found it really pointless to be honest. I ended up turning it off. I definitely think Apple should have added this by now though for those that want it.... I personally will be turning it off as I see no use for it (Maybe because I have an apple watch) But yeah I really thought Apple would add this along with OLED displays.

I always liked the ability for Samsung phones to show the time plus a little tidbit of information on the OLED screen without the need to turn on the screen. That said, tapping my screen or raise to wake does just about enough of the same thing.

The more I think about it, I feel things like AOD, should be a choice on iOS. Thus, those who want to use it, can, etcetera...

I know this is not really a thread option, but if I could have ‘dark mode’ versus an ‘always on display’, I would choose dark mode specifically. And always on display doesn’t really benefit me when I use raise to wake, and of course I can always ask Siri for certain requests, like the time or if I have any notifications.

Hmm, that Siri option is not a bad idea. I currently don’t use any voice type services. In my experience, with my accent, I often have to repeat myself. So, I just don’t bother.

But, it has been a few years since I have tried voice activated service. So, I might just try Siri...

On the max (and Xs and X), you can create a shortcut for smart invert. It's not true dark mode, but it works fine. And yes, I wish my max had an option for an always on display.

Smart invert works for me, I know others don’t care for it. On the topic of dark mode, others are under the assumption it’s coming for iOS 13, we will know here by June. I’m actually hoping they do give us the option, as it has been long-awaited.

I've got an S7, and I'm planning a move to iOS sometime in the future, but the lack of AOD is a huge buzzkill. I love it on the S7. The idea of a dumb dead screen sitting on your desk and needing you to pick it up / switch it on to see the time, date, or what type of notification you have ... that seems hella antiquated.

It's one of the main things I miss from the Pixel.
