I like the idea of the App Library. I used to back and forth between Samsung and Apple and I always loved the App drawer. Having uncluttered home screens is great. But I’d rather have the alphabetical list and the ability to sort it with a few filters rather than these somewhat arbitrarily grouped folders that only make half-sense. I honestly don’t know why Apple did this. It feels a bit hand-holdy to me.

100%. Seems like they want to force big folders on people. If the grouping is arbitrary and doesn’t make sense to the users preference it’s worthless.

In the App Library, just scroll downwards and and that is exactly what you get. 🙂

Awesome! I tried that before but it didn't work. You have to click on the search box and then scroll. I love it. Thanks for the tip!

Go to the apps library and swipe down. I wish there was a way to make that the default view.

100% agree. That would be even better... future updates, perhaps.

They're organised by category and then alphabetical order.

I'd suggest hiding your existing home screens and giving it a shot. I've done that and things are far less cluttered, and now I can use the other home screens for only the apps I always use and/or a Siri smart stack for suggested apps which is pretty accurate.
My Home Screen is already not cluttered at all. Two pages, with apps put in logical folders, exactly where they should be. The App Library is a disorganized mess compared to what I already have. AND it’s duplicative, so doubly bad.
it’s great, means you can clear the apps off your screens and have a cleaner look whilst still having access to them.
No, you haven’t cleared them away unless you buy into the idea that the App Library is different from the Home Screen. Which it isn’t. It’s just another page of the Home Screen, but one you can’t organize and can’t delete.

I did finally hide all but two Home Screen pages and added some widgets. Much cleaner. I’ve been using search for apps for ever anyway.

Looks pretty clean.

At some point I should delete a few apps but with 256g storage not pressing.

Do the people that like the App Library also like Windows Mobile? Just curious... To me, neither is easy on the eyes, both are cluttered. And the lack of customization in iOS makes it worse in some ways...

Same it’s terrible my ocd I have one page with everything in the same place and in folders I don’t need widgets or App Library
Just like with the widgets screen before, which has been there for a while now, the App Library can simply not be used.

I really like it. Just the first home-screen and the App Library only here.

I was getting bored of having to organise each of my screens, so the App Library really suits me.

its also making me use the search field loads more which is good. Generally my phone feels way more zen now.

I like App Library. Do the categories make sense? Nah, but the reality is that I do not have to put stuff into folders myself now. I remove them from the home screens and say put in App Library...don't have to think about it now. I have started using the search bar by pulling down on the Home Screen again and that's how I get to apps that are not on the Home Screen. I don't mind it at all. Those who seem to be arguing against it don't want to change their mindset, but at the same time it simply is you can either continue using the folders you had and ignore the App Library altogether, or use it and figure out the app categories (sounds silly to me, especially when I don't even know who is the one that sets the categories in the App Store that this taps into), or just put all apps you don't use there and search.

I am sure this will eventually evolve into something really useful or it will stay the same as it is now. The purpose of it being the way it is now is PROBABLY so that people don't have to manage this in the same way they would manage folders. Just because one person is okay with managing a lot of folders does not mean that everyone is.

I personally don't see the point in App Library, but I've been using iOS for years and have my home screens arranged just as I like them: I'm guessing this is for people who just want to have a few of their most used apps on home screens and let iOS take care of the rest

Also, because iOS never had a way to have an app installed but not on a home screen page before, there's obviously 100% duplication of apps between existing home screens and the app library for anyone upgrading

It may grow on me, but for now it's a pretty useless feature that I'll probably just ignore

I like it a lot. It would be nice if you could customize some of the grouping, but I have so many apps that i use maybe once a year or every few months like specific stores or tv networks its nice to not have them cluttering my homescreen or other folders. I never really liked the look of the regular folders, and having a bunch of them together was just meh and hurt my brain to look at. I keep a few folders still for stuff I use often so I don't have to sift through a bunch of apps to find them, but the rest are all removed from my home screens. love that you can easily access a few of the most used in each category and vertical scrolling to see whats in each category instead of side scrolling through a folder. Actually kinda wish normal folders would look and act like that.

Yeah, it's basically for those who never really organize apps or even use folders.

I loved Windows Phone (especially WP7's UI). I hate the App Library. Apple has somehow managed to take the worst aspects of Windows Phone and merge them with the worst aspects of iOS, and I'm not sure how that's even possible. But they did, and iOS is worse off because of it.

I remove them from the home screens and say put in App Library...don't have to think about it now.

I didn't even realize that option was there. Is there really any difference to going through and removing them from the homescreen vs just hiding pages? I threw them all on the same pages and hid them instead of removing.

To be fair, not really. I just don't want to have to look at multiple pages when trying to move widgets and such. I am OCD about that part, but not folders...go figure. To me, it seems a little silly to have pages of apps all organized in some way (even if haphazardly) to just hide those pages. So, when moving stuff around you can hit the minus button and tell it to move to App Library and the icon goes away from the home screen entirely until you move it back to one. Same thing really, just no extra pages of apps hanging around unless you want that back again. Then it may be a PITA to redo all those pages.

You have made it quite clear that everyone needs to share your exact preferences. We get it. Get over yourself.

Apple has taken control and is now apparently in charge of my desktop config. It is awful and there is no reason it can’t be hidden.
My exact preferences? Not sure what that's about. And yes an option to hide it would be good to have. For the moment just not using it, similar to not using the widgets screen that has been present for years, is there.

Yeah exactly. It’s pretty much for disorganized people. I don’t mean that to be critical or unkind, but it is. For people who have already organized their apps, it’s useless at best and UI bloat at worst. So... just make it optional and everyone will be happy.

I am shocked how many people actually used folders, lol. I mean I used them, but only to stash all the apps that I deemed unworthy of being on the home screen (I never put folders on the main home screen because they're UGLY).

I always swipe down from the home screen and start typing the app name when I wanted to open something not on my main screen. I've done it that way for years and it's still what I do.

I LOVE that they are automatically sorted in the library in alphabetical order. No guessing or remembering where things live.

I LOVE that I am now able to disable automatically adding new app icons to the home screen.

I LOVE that I truly have just one page now.

So I guess you could say I am quite happy with the new layout. :)

Windows Phone was awesome for it's design and usability!
I love and miss it dearly!
Even had a many years old "hacked" Lumia on the last supported Version. But they stopped with security updates about a year ago or so.

For those unfamiliar with Windows Phone:
You could pin/unpin/resize/group these "app squares" into folders or any grid layout you desired and also name the folders.
the "app squares" could additionally be activated as "live tiles", think widgets.
Swipe to the left on this home screen and an A-Z list of all installed apps was right there.

I dislike the Apple implementation, as the home screen doesn't allow so much personalization and the App Library is forced in it's current state, rather than a simple A-Z list for those who prefer it that way.
