Having more choice, means you can continue using iCloud if you wish, having google/dropbox/onedrive etc doesn't remove that. so that arguement makes no sense whatsoever
Google/Dropbox/OneDrive exists today already. Google Photos already can hook into Apple Photos. Nothing is being blocked there. I can, and do, already safe my files onto Google, Dropbox, OneDrive, and iCloud as required.

The basic issue is that people feel the need to dump on apple because there are functions and / or features that people would like to see implemented but apple hasn’t for whatever reason.

In some instances this escalates into hyperbole; which throws rational and cogent discussion out the window. The displeasure is so apparent one wonders why a person continues to stay with apple products and services. And in these cases yes a suitable reply is warranted. And what we may deem suitable is a line in the sand.

The way the forum title is phrased is a little clickbaity. However it’s one thing to launch a lawsuit and another thing to win or get a settlement.

Good luck to the plaintiffs I wish them a lot of luck. In the meantime I’ll grab popcorn.
Especially because most of the people is complaining because Apple is not implementing Google’s services.

No, your demand makes no sense whatsoever and shows you have no idea what’s involved in software engineering (while I, having worked in that field for close to 2 decades, do).

Apple can’t just wave a magic wand and make those things work automatically. They can’t just flip a switch and ta da! Now Drop Box works!

Instead they have to devote significant time and resources to redesigning APIs to support 3rd party services. Not just making it possible for them to be used but ensuring the don’t create security breaches and other bugs. Designing for external vs internal use, where you know (ALL the variables) is an entirely different problem set. It also means you have to dumb it down to the lowest common denominator, aka make the experience more limited for your own service. You can’t add new features as quickly or possibly at all because the 3rd party services can’t work with them and if it’s not the same experience the EU is breathing down your neck again.

Further it diverts resources from OTHER areas of iOS so new features and improvements we would have gotten now get delayed or cut.

So in the end your “choice” costs people who prefer the current system the following:

- Security
- Stability
- Improved iCloud features
- Improved non-iCloud features

The rest of us (the majority BTW) get an inferior experience just because you can’t be bothered to research your phone purchase in advance.

iCloud is so much more. You can use any kind of system or just use rsync from the command line. But what about everything else from iCloud? What about your messages for example across all devices?
That's my point. If Apple won't allow competition then how would a third party implement a viable solution?

What do you mean by won't allow competition? You can have your files whereever you want, you can have your photos whereever you want, etc. No platform (other than iCloud) on any computing OS does SMS messaging. Application data you can either backup yourself however you want. Or 'apps' can have their own mechanism for the data.

It is not like it is being blocked, the systems are open, the storage is open. As a single integrated service there is nothing like it on any other OS.

I think the "actual" problem is that the UK isn't getting their cut, so it must be an illegal action on the part of Apple.

Anyone who can't figure out how to backup or store their documents outside of iCloud probably should not be using computers to begin with.

I have not spent a single cent on anything that has to do with iCloud and I am getting along just fine.

Linus Tech Tips did a series on YouTube on how to "de-Google your life" (part 2 got deleted but was reuploaded elsewhere). It was food for thought for me on how to escape iCloud some day. Especially photo hosting and local backup is something I would rather control myself (iOS 18 Photos app, looking at you). Plus you can mostly skip subscription fees.

But iCloud convenience is so high. And I've been using their services since the days of MobileMe, not much experience with other platforms. Project for next year maybe.

De-google your digital life is a wise choice

Again, you can backup your iPhone / iPad via iTunes and move the backup to whatever cloud service you like more. Your argument makes no sense.

Even a dumb chatbot running on a 6 year old broken GPU makes more sense that some people these days. Even when truth is staring at them in the face they say absurd things.

There are a dozen cloud services you can use and sync data with. iCloud, Microsoft, Google, Proton, Meta, etc.

Every survey says Apple is the most trusted.

Which magazine - with no data whatsoever claims that 40 million users feel trapped. These dishonest mother ****ers did not ask 40 million any question about anything.

Old story: they are just looking for money, and doesn’t really care about customer’s satisfaction. iCloud definitely is a trusted service. The only criticism I could move is the basic plan being too small nowadays.

You're not trapped in iCloud.

You are trapped in retail and residential properties secretly owned by corrupt foreign leaders and dictators.

They bleed renters and businesses to death but you're not supposed to question it. You're told to worry about the Apple Store and the shape of USB ports instead.
