When you go into settings what firmware version do you have on the second generation AirPods?

Mine says 1A671
It also says I’m on hardware version 1.0.0, I was expecting it to say version two.

Edit: it looks like this is the latest version.

Hardware version is still at 1 because they are still gen1 product just with wireless charging.
They could’ve changed it to maybe 1.5 or something but even apple doesn’t refer to the as AirPods 2

And the firmware should be 6.3.2

Yeah these are the second generation with different silicone inside. Firmware is a different track apparently. Thanks all.

I hate to dredge up an old thread, but I got a pair of AirPods 2 yesterday that came with firmware 1A661. I'm an Android User, so clearly can't upgrade the firmware with my phone. However I do have a MacBook Pro which doesn't help me, and an original iPad Air. I connected them to my iPad Air (running iOS 12.2) and have tried all kinds of things to get them to update to 1A671 but with no luck. Has anyone successfully updated these with an iPad or do I have to return them today? As I haven't owned an iPhone in a few years now.

Go to Apple store and pair them with a display phone to update. Barring that use a friends phone.

If I have to make the 25 mile trip back to an Apple Store today it's to return them. I don't have any friends with an iPhone anymore unfortunately. I was hoping the iPad would work (as several of the documents I saw said "iOS" device running 12.2, and a few even specifically mentioned iPad). However since the iPad is also quite OLD I wonder if BT 5.0 is required?

They should work with an iPad or Mac that’s connected to iCloud.

Listen to them whilst on the iPad, them put them in the case, wait 30 minutes & check them again.

@Ralfi is right: it doesn’t happen immediately. There are some tips in this thread for how to try to force the issue, also.

I tried over and over many different ways including letting them sit there overnight. Eventually ONE of the TWO Airpods updated to 1a671 while the other stayed at 1a661 which forced them to desync and effectively become 2 separate bluetooth devices. I ended up going back to the apple store and getting a pair of beats studio3 wireless headphones instead (which you can literally update the firmware on from an app on your Mac). The Apple Store was as confused by the desync issue I had created as I was.

I’m joining the confused crowd here too.

Never heard of only one AirPod updating.

Yeah, I ended up with 2 airpods, which both showed up in Bluetooth (I even renamed them left and right), and when you looked at the firmware versions on each, it was baffling. And I can say the difference between 1a661 and 1a671 is pretty insane. As I could put both in my ears, start playing a song, and double tap one to make it active, then double tap the other, and switch back and forth and hear the difference.

Insane good, or insane bad? What differences did you ‘observe’?

Just noticed that my 1st gen Airpods updated to version 6.8.8 when I connected with 11 Pro Max.

It seems my AirPod 2 has been updated to 2A364 firmware version after updating iPhone X to iOS 13. My AirPod 1 is similar to jfim88, updated to 6.8.8.
