Yeah let’s just make upgrading £160 headphones every year or two the norm, hey.
Are you mad? No normal person is going to want to start upgrading AirPods, iPhone, Mac, Watch etc every two years. You’re already seeing the decline in revenue for Apple by them attempting this strategy. It will work with the hardcore but there’s no way I’m getting sucked into the mentality of upgrading every time a newer version comes out.
I’m just going to roll with USD here to keep it simple, but please hear me out.
I got three years out of my original pair of AirPods, where we didn’t even have the option of getting AC for it. Battery life is next to nothing at this point, barely holds its charge. But hey, I got three years out of it.
A new of AirPods Pro, with an additional cost of $29 for AC, I’m sure I can get at least four years out of it. How? Get the battery serviced before AC expires, ride it for another two years (if not longer) and call it good.
$279/48 months is $5.80/month. What is that? Cup of coffee? Tall craft beer somewhere? Your tip on a $14.20 bill since you felt generous and rounded it up to $20?
There is no need for an “average” consumer to update their products every “X” years. However, your $X iPad that you got 7 years ago may be living its last days. Your $Y MBP that you got 8 years ago may not be supported anymore. Your $Z iPhone that you got back in 2013 may not be compatible with 5G soon. Your $A AW that you got back in 2015 might be showing its age by now, lagging, battery not holding its charge, etс.
I don’t understand why some people have the entitlement of “I spent so much on this device, it should last me forever.”
Technology changes. Devices that you purchase in your every day lives won’t last forever. They may still be in mint condition after a decade of ownership, but they sure will become obsolete someway. That’s the reality of it.
Cheers!
