I'm probably one of the few that is really happy, I'm ready to replace my 21.5 2017 iMac but didn't want a 2 year old one, so am going to order a green one with the Touch ID, I was worried there wasn't going to be much at the cheaper end.

I just don't get it.
Not the lack of 27 inch option, or starting configuration.
But the choice of colors.
Why do they continue with the pastel colors for the front? Why? They can do wonderful colors, they just need to take a look at the BACK of the iMacs.
I just don't get it.

I have a feeling this'll be Apple's last iMac.

Are there ANY advantages of this over an MBA with a monitor?

I think that the entire desktop (Mac, not PC) market is headed for a reckoning very soon, starting with the already-underway death of the Mac Pro.
haha VR/AI is'a comin'

I really wonder why we did not get the M3 MacBook Air. Can somebody please explain?
Because the current model is plenty good enough (and then some) for the majority of what users are using the Air for. It was only updated recently too. Clever business practice. If people really ‘think’ they need an m3 (they almost certainly don’t NEED it).. forces them to spend more to get a Pro.

Or a mini plus studio display.
I’m keeping my 27” iMac (2019) going as long as possible! 3TB hard drive and 64GB memory is good enough for me.

I was forced to go up in size in 2019 because the 21” iMac 🖥️ models didn’t have the spec I needed. My first one was a 21” in 2012.

I suspect late 2024 will be the last time I can update to the newest OS; they issue security updates for, I think, 2-3 more years and so I’ll be forced to upgrade 2026-27.

A lot will change by then, however on the present lineup I think I’ll either need a studio with a display or maybe a laptop and use it with a display.

keep saying that Apple, but it won’t make it true. It ain’t a 5K 27 inch display.
They sell that separately. Don’t want the iMac to cannibalize on the sales of 27” displays that are more expensive than a the base model iMac

There were some troubling things here, the way Logic and FinalCut were shrugged aside, but also the attitude that the 24" replaces 21,5 AND 27". I love the 24", had to use it as a working machine while my old iMacPro was in repair back in 2020 and was surprised at how capable that little M1 was in comparison. Also a real fan of the LAN-integrated-into-the-power-brick-idea. Our intern was given a choice between 27" 5K 2017 machine and the M1 and chose the smaller screen. But a 27" just as thin and light as the 24" would be a sweet spot between the (too) massive StudioDisplays and StudioMac-combi, portable enough, powerful enough and a bit more affordable somewhere between 24" and the Studio-Kit.

No it's not. 8GB of RAM can still do a lot of Photoshop and video editing work at 4k resolution. Memory Pressure is still in the green on some of the client computers I see.
8GB RAM are a joke. Especially for a machine one would use for a decade until replacing. I am using at least 20GB RAM when editing photos and that‘s not including editing my hi–res medium format film scans.

And developers are so lazy nowadays, so they ship a web app together with its own browser as an Electron app, using up 2 GB RAM for a simple chat.

Which model has the best specs? Is the top of the line (512gb) overkill or should I buy the 256gb storage middle one? There are 3 different models advertised on Apple’s web site. I’m leaning toward the high end iMac. Not sure what color. I like the orange or silver.
I'd wait until there's been a few SSD speed tests on the M3 Macs published before deciding which model to go for.

The smaller SSDs in the M2 machines are slower than those in the original M1 Macs, which with just 8gb memory can make the computer run slower if it's using the SSD a lot for swap.

(In some situations the newer M2 MB Air is slower than the cheaper M1 Air when both in base spec.)

In addition to getting more storage (which you may need anyway) larger SSDs are usually faster and solve the problem.

Exactly, that’s why they have not released a a new larger, pro iMac. They want people to buy the studio products.
Just that the Studio display sucks for its price. I‘d much rather get an Eizo display that I can actually calibrate.

Man, I feel kind of let down by this; the brand new 2023 iMac is exactly the same as the 2021 iMac except for a different chip. Everything else: RAM, storage, design, etc... it's unchanged after two years. 😅

I wasn't really expecting a special 25th anniversary iMac or anything, but I hoped Apple would at least increase the starting model's storage space or something, you know? (seriously, 256 GB in 2023? Sheesh.)
I agree. But apples mindset is different:
1) if you need a lot of storage because you’re doing pro stuff you need a Mac Pro or Studio. Can’t afford that? Tough luck.
2) Another option is to pay them each month for some cloud storage.
3) and finally just give them an obscene amount of money for a bigger SSD

Apple is not a gift shop. They need their profit to increase every year. They can only do that by offering the above.

You could also buy an external drive.

Edit: The iMac has become a niche stationary product for all of those who like a pretty looking All-in-one solution for web browsing and word documents. Don’t know why it needs an M3 for that, but I guess they ran out of M1’s 🤷‍♂️

Then give us a bloody more affordable 27" monitor!!! The Studio Display is so expensive, not to mention the Pro Display... I am  I understand profits, but I guessed they would eventually offer the 27" after holding back to help the Studio products. Offering a 24" and claiming it's "the perfect replacement for the 4K and the 5K Intel based models" feels like being told a lie without them even trying to hide it. A bit like when Cook was overselling the iPad pro by saying "I think if you're looking at a PC, why would you buy a PC any more? No really, why would you buy one?"
I agree. But then you actually don’t understand how profit works. Apple would profit less if they do as you say.

Holding on to my Intel iMac 27” from 2020 for now. Next Mac will be a Mac mini and some non-Apple +27” display.

I have no need for retina, but a lot of screen estate.

I think folks wishing the Mac Pro to go off on some Threadripper/Xeon W 'killer' tangent are fooling themselves. There is no financial rational motivation there for Apple to fork off that far in that direction for a very , very relatively low volume product all by itself.
Concur.

But the Mac Pro still needs a rethink.

I'm not saying it should head in the Threadripper direction.

I am saying that the Mac Pro is always going to be a very small volume product. Apple is charging quite the premium for what is basically an expansion box at this point. The same processing innards as the Mac Studio Ultra but with a legacy expansion bus at a very premium price... is a thing.

What I am wondering is why Apple does not see itself serving the high-end server market.
