I'm ready to replace my 21.5 2017 iMac but didn't want a 2 year old one
I'm in the same boat, but with a 15 year old iMac that needs replaced.

I am disappointed in the iMac upgrade price schedule (it didn't change.) That will likely push me to a Mac Mini, as I can live with a mere 4K 27" third party monitor.

“It’s the perfect size and resolution to replace both the 4K and the 5K Intel based models.”

Totally disagree. Perhaps that statement is correct for anyone replacing the 21.5 inch model. I'm really hoping that by the time I need to replace my 27 inch Late 2020 iMac, that there will be a larger screen option.
The only other option for a larger screen at this time is getting the separate Mac Studio and 27 inch Studio Display, at a much higher cost than an all in one iMac.

The new mac is faster than the old one. Yes fine, of course it is.
But its not actually better? Still fairly limited in terms of what it comes with, and still no 27 inch model??

There is a huge gap between the costs of a 24 inch iMac and the combination of a Apple display and mac mini or studio (due to the price of the Apple display).

“It’s the perfect size and resolution to replace both the 4K and the 5K Intel based models.”

There goes all the hope that 27” iMac users had left, at least for a good while.

Sorry guys!
Hah. I read the live blog on my way to work this morning, they said that Intel MBP owners should upgrade to the next M3s. No thanks for now, my 2020 13” MBP is still going strong! It’s the last model pre-M Series.

Tons of people use 24” monitors.
Sure. If all you need to do is email, word documents, web and YouTube 24 is all fine. And this is what Apple is targeting here. Just look at the marketing pictures and lack of Pro options for the M3.

If you’re doing anything more creative or productive (like actual work) it’s not enough and clearly the iMac is not suitable for this anymore.

To do that Apple wants you to pay more (or find a sweet spot with a Mac mini and some display).

Edit: I am now realizing that I have been “using it wrong” with my iMac. I was not supposed to max it out and use it for music production. Shame on me.

Never said anything about you using your iMac wrong.

Someone said nobody uses 24 inch monitors anymore and I replied saying plenty do.

That was all.

Just as a Mac is a product you understand or not the iMac is a device you “get“ or not.

The vitriol around here over the 24 iMac is way over-the-top.

The howling of “Apple didn’t give me what I want so obviously they’re totally clueless and don’t know what they’re doing.” screams of entitlement.

But stop and think. If a 27in iMac had been such a howling success for a company whose primary goal is to make money then, of course, it would be here. But it’s not. Think—what does that tell you?

There aren’t enough of the vocal minority on this site to support Apple making a large AIO with 5K display and M3 Pro/Mac for the price they would charge.

An M3 27 iMac doesn’t currently exist because Apple‘s reading of the market doesn’t see it profitable to do so. The 24 iMac does fit Apple’s reading of the market and thats why it’s here.

All the howling and hating won’t change that in the slightest.

I was not expecting the Max chip to make it in the iMac, but I’m disappointed there is no Pro option à la Mini - hopefully this does not signal the end of the Pro option when the Mini gets updated with the M3.

“Sucks for its price”

Have you ever actually used one?
I have looked at it in an Apple Store. It does look nice. But so does any other 4k OLED display of this size. And 1999€ for a display that can’t be hardware calibrated? It’s just an overpriced display with a nice spec sheet. But if one works outside in bright daylight, doesn’t care about colour accuracy or desperately needs speakers and a webcam integrated in a display it might still fit the needs of some.

The horrible mouse and keyboard still use Lightning. Couldn't even have bothered to change out the port on the bottom of the mouse? That's really phoning it in.
This is Tim cook’s apple. I bet they have a stack of existing inventory and production line contracts for making the lightning accessories. No doubt these will change when it makes business sense for them to do so (likely changing production of these to India or Vietnam instead of china)

Likely not out yet simply because they can’t make enough m3 chips to fulfill the demand for their biggest selling Mac.
More likely because they just introduced the 15 Air with M2 only a few months ago so they’ll release the 13 and 15 M3 Air in the Spring 2024 around March. That could also generate a sales bump after the holidays when things are generally quieter.

We might also see iPad 11 at that time. And if we do I suspect them to discontinue iPad 9 and drop the price of the 11 which will then be the entry level iPad.

I am sooo disappointed there is no 27 iMac. I would love for someone to ask Apple why. I can only speculate they do not want to cannibalise the sales of Mac mini and Studio, but still. What difference does it make to them? Making a 27" would not be that expensive in terms of research and design, and I would not think they are making such profit margins on mini and Studio. Why push some consumers of the all-in-one design towards Windows? Why disappoint your loyal fanbase??!!
Probably because the fanbase of a powerful big all in one is probably quite small now, sorry to say.

I think that apple would rather you buy a Mac mini pro or Mac studio and their nice big screen.
