I saw someone say they have you take a screen shot from speedtest.net for the internet speed. But I'm curious about the office too. .
As with just about everything else related to this job, the answer is... it depends.
How did they check my internet speed? They didn't - ever. And I get about 65-70 Mbps down and 20-25 Mbps up, for whatever that's worth, so I was prepared. For other people, a visit to speedtest.net and a screen shot were required.
The ergonomics people do require photos to demonstrate that the office setup meets the requirements. Again though, how this translates for an individual is anyone's guess. I sent my pics in and fully expected them to make me buy a new chair. I have an old beat-up piece of crap that my ex-wife's parents gave me for Christmas about a hundred years ago. My setup was approved as-is. Others, who may very well have better arrangements than mine, have been required to buy new chairs/desks/etc.
I think the basic point is that they're not trying to be dicks for the sake of being dicks. If your internet speed seems sufficient to handle the training, then it's probably sufficient to do the job. If your home office is somewhere in the ballpark of the ergonomic requirements, then they'll give it a thumbs-up and send you on your way.
Based on what I've seen, I think they should actually be a lot more strict about the internet speed. Numerous people encounter problems, day after day after day, and blame these problems on the Apple network. The Apple network does in fact suck balls, and the tools that we use are buggy and obnoxious, but those of us with fast and reliable internet connections don't encounter nearly as much difficulty as some of our colleagues. But for now you can get by with 2 Mbps of download speed.
