That's because everytime they updated carOS:
  • the UI changed,
  • They dash display would suffer from jelly scrolling
  • the car would turn off when you got a Telugu text,
  • carOS would have to index for 2 days before you got full performance again
  • the HVAC would get the temperature wrong and blow hot air
  • the battery would drain too fast for whatever reason
:ducking:

Seriously though what made Apple want to even try to do this. I’m not mad at Apple for canceling it now, but I am kind of annoyed they let it go so far in the first place.

Hopefully this improves their focus. Margins are low in cars anyway.

Vehicle margin was 22.7% in the fourth quarter of 2023, compared with 20.0% in the fourth quarter of 2022 and 21.2% in the third quarter of 2023.

This is what a new Chinese EV company can do. Are you telling me Apple is worse than a new startup? Especially with their supply chain relationship, global distribution network, consolidated software team, and fans paying more than they should?

Oh and they can And would build in Asia, so labor cost will be almost the same

not surprised given the current EV narratives are collapsing. Other factors aside the environmental cost and damage of production of batteries, coupled with the loss of efficiency in cold weather are the latest facts in a large scale retraction from the EV cult.
Don’t get me wrong EVs definitely have a bespoke niche, particularly in urban environments, but not to the scale that Apple would require to make it a viable investment. Happy to see them drop this nonsense and get back to the business of making consumer electronics as a primary goal.

I dont know why anyone wanted this in the first place. An Apple Car would be a nightmare. Tesla is already bad enough with it's lock-down on parts and repairs... can you imagine trying to repair an Apple Car, that only lets you use Apple-certified parts, installed by an Apple technician, with no aftermarket parts allowed without bricking some critical feature? No thanks.

The iPhone of EVs already exists: Tesla, and Tim Cook realized that. Whenever people say they want an EV, they actually mean a Tesla. This is why Ford, GM, Mercedes have all failed miserably in comparison. The only competition is with Chinese EV companies and that's only for their domestic market.
The Mercedes EQS is a beautiful vehicle with a level of craftsmanship and detail you could never receive from Tesla.

I always assumed that's the route Apple would take with their vehicles, even if they were rumored to be partnering with a less luxury/more budget-focused carmaker. But cars are so much more expensive than phones, and the ROI for "status devices" in a product-category where consumers keep those products for years (if not decades) is completely at odds with Apple's other products.

And that's without mentioning how much more regulation there is in the automotive industry, the worse profit-margins, and the general responsibility that manufacturers have to support those vehicles (for years) should any problems arise.

I'm seeing lots of non-Tesla vehicles now. Most are probably hybrids, which I think is the best approach right now, until technology advances even more. We need a radical leap in battery technology, and Apple is working on that, too.

All the resources could have been poured into AI for the past DECADE. Instead we get Vision Pro and a vaporware Apple Car.
Well Tim said autonomous driving was the master of all AI in Apple, no wonder their AI sucks in general if 10 years of research can be cancelled like this

This is the day that all car manufacturers have been waiting to breathe a sigh of relief. Steve & co would have turned the car industry upside down. Is sad that apple car ends like this, in a cold February day, what could have been a world changer, literally, now is history.
