The Apple car did seem like a pretty weird and almost unbelievable project. After all, why would a consumer electronics company get into automobile manufacturing? That would be like McDonalds suddenly deciding to produce an anime; it's so random and nonsensical that it has to be impossib-

It’s a surprise, but actually it shouldn’t be. Seeing as how complicated the car market is and how low profit margins are. Nobody is going to pay $ 150.000 for a car that costs $ 80.000 to produce. In the USA Apple might sell some cars for Apple prices, but that won’t work outside the USA.

Electric cars have literally no upsides whatsoever.
They cost more to buy. They cost more to refill, and they take so much longer doing so. They have so much less range than other cars. Worst of all, they are a proven danger to society.
They are far more prone to fires and explosions due to the sheer volume of battery in the car, and not if but when they catch on fire, they take time and resources tenfold what a standard car fire would take.
One upside to an EV is all I ask.
today they cost more to buy - that ill change over time
cost to refill - they are cheaper. I'm in CA and pay ~ $13 to charge my Bolt EUV to get ~ 250 miles. $13 today let's me buy ~ 3 gallons of gasoline in CA - point to the car (ICE) that goes 250 miles with 3 gallons.
An Ioniq 5 or 6 takes less than 20 min for ~ 180 miles of range, sure, longer than refilling an ICE but technology is improving.
look at statistics of car fires and you will find that EVs are NOT more prone to fires ...

"Worst of all, they are a proven danger to society." - LMAO

How can they cancel something that was NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN?

How many times have I posted that there is no Apple car, there has never been an Apple car, and there will never be an Apple car?

No clue. It was a lot.

Yes, and it’s an accessory almost everyone needs on a daily basis, which could process a lot more data and be more helpful compared to, I would argue an Apple Watch.

Now imagine Apple discontinuing Apple Watch.

I think this, is true, is a MASSIVE strategic failure
You are ignoring the lack of competition in the market for Apple Watch.

Here’s one….batteries are garbage in cold weather. Hybrid is the way to go. People who own electric cars in cold climates have grown to hate them in massive numbers and said they’ll never get another
simply not true. yes, range is less in colder weather, but with the right education many/most are doing just fine.

an electric car is just about as prone to exploding as the phone in your pocket.
True. But consider the scale. Your EV weighs around 8,000 times as much as the iPhone in your pocket. When your iPhone battery catches on fire, it can still do a lot of damage, but multiply that by 8,000 and consider the much harsher exposure to the environment that your EV receives, and it is understandably a significant cause for concern and a reminder of why safety precautions are so vital in EV development.

I have a direct line to the statistics, my father is a firefighter. His average car fire takes a few hours at most, and because of the infrastructure of the gas car most people will survive the fire.
His most recent Tesla fire took all night. The person involved in the incident could not be rescued from inside the car because they couldn’t open the car, and the stupid thing reignited days later.
EVs are a death trap, the technology is not at all ready.

I look forward to when loads of the concepts will be shown off and talks of how close or far away they were from a finished product will happen. Hopefully some of the patents and clever engineering will come to some use in the future no matter what the product it is.

Would also be interesting to hear more about the engineers plans and thoughts around batteries, I can only imagine that solid state batteries were on the roadmap.

How about a standalone CarPlay app? Oh no, car makers wouldn’t like that at all!

They cost more to buy: perhaps but it really depends on which ICE vehicle you were planning to buy. Bronco Sport, sure. Audi A7, not so much.
The cost more to refill: surely you don't actually believe this.
They take longer to fill: true but that time is coming down and is already shorter than I spend at Buc-ees when stopping for a pit stop in our ICE vehicle.
They have much less range: also true. They are also filled up every morning when I leave so I save a trip to the gas station every 4 days. I am old enough to not WANT to drive for more than 300 miles in a go. Usually, I would prefer to stop every 2-3 hours.
Proven danger to society: I strongly disagree
More prone to fire: I don't know if you know this but ICE cars have been catching fire in garages for DECADES. It is difficult to extinguish a battery fire, no doubt, but ICE cars are 11x more likely to catch fire.

One upside: Total cost of ownership is my biggest upside. There are a myriad of others but you just asked for one.

The amount of people in this thread that believe the EV is the future is appalling… yiiikes
It may not be the future for a long time, but it's our eventual future.

Burning fossil fuels is not sustainable long term. As we develop better ways to generate and store electricity, EVs will absolutely take over the market eventually.

The tech isn't really fully there yet, but think about how electric cars perform now, compared to 20 years ago. It's night and day how much the tech has advanced, and it continues to do so every year.

Frankly I can't wait until gas engines are in the past. They're inefficient, pollute, and are more difficult to maintain. Good riddance.

2,000 employees * $100k/year salary * 10 years =

$2 billion

If the Apple Vision Pro is a financial flop as well, we will be seeing a new CEO pretty soon.

I suppose it's a good thing I never worked for Apple because I love cars and I'd totally want to work on that project lol.

They make people feel that they are doing something to help the environment, while giving them a reason to be angry about…something.
