People you meet do not know wether you are gay or straight, so how exactly does this discrimination look like? How often do people ask you:"Are you gay?" I haven't been asked that question since my teenage years.
I only see this coming up with wedding photogs, christian cake bakers, wedding chapels or if you rub it in peoples face by dancing naked on a wagon at christopher street day.

Surely you know the answer to this. Prejudicial attitudes effect you in all important aspects of your life, professional, religious, pleasure, and in public depending on how much the individual wears their sexual orientation on their sleeve.

Why do people care when Bieber gets arrested? Not at all a good analogy, but you get my point.

Also, to the 'used to think you were Bi'. I'm a guy in a long term relationship with a woman. That doesn't mean I'm strait. In fact every long term relationship I've had was with women. That still doesn't mean I'm strait. If you are attracted to the same sex as well as the opposite sex, you are Bi. If you get drunk and want to make out with the same sex...you are Bi. If you are in a long term relationship with the opposite sex but you are still attracted to the same sex...you are Bi. While I'm not suggesting that you are Bi, I just wanted to make sure the definition of Bi is established. You don't have to prove it every few years.
I saw myself as Bi once but i no longer see myself bi anymore. I now have a Girlfriend and I am no longer attracted to the same sex as i use to be - even before I was with my girlfriend I lost my attraction. It does happen - maybe you should try to talk to some people in the LGBT community!

As Jeffy, I prefer two tall scandinavian women. I guess Tim is opening up (no pun intended) so people feel more comfortable but at this day and era, who gives a ****.

Did this really need the "due to the the controversial nature of this topic..." warning?

They need to warn the bigots with sensitive tummies who might get upset at gay people being discussed or even acknowledged as existing.

Why is that?

Because being homosexual or transgender does not matter here. We never really talk about it, we've moved on. The same is with colour, race and creed.

In conversation if someone says they are gay, well, it gets said but no judgement is made. The same if someone is black, America for example you see black and white people are quite separate, in the UK colour never ever become a thought when I see someone.

Now I realize why Apple likes to make everything round-ish and bendable....i kid i kid

I read the quote couple of times but cannot see anything where he is mentioning being gay. Captain?

This seems like all the other apple secrets. The leaks and rumors have made the announcement a little anticlimactic.

So did you make a conscious 'choice' to be heterosexual? For me puberty kicked in and I went from hating girls, to being totally obsessed with them, pretty much over night.

It was clearly a biological effect.

This is why scientists can change the sexual preferences of mice by deleting certain genes.

Tim Cook had no choice in the matter. Why would he 'choose' to have his life made miserable by clueless religious people anyway?

Excuse me, but what religious people are making Tim Cooks life miserable?

The reality is that the homosexual movement does not want equality. They ALREADY have that in the US. Discrimination is illegal. The true agenda is that they want everyone to tell them "its ok" and affirm it.

I am not taking a side here either way but if someone has an opinion, religious or not, they are entitled to it. They are not required to tell someone else that what they are doing is ok.

I'm coming out because of Tims announcement.

I'm male, 57 and attracted to 20 year old woman with a nice ass.
There I said it.
That's good to know. Up to now we thought you were attracted to anyone with a pulse.

Everyone is bisexual until they declare.

That's so silly. Why just four years ago, Obama was so-called homophob by your definition. He claimed marriage should be between a man and a woman. Then he changed his mind. Of course, no pressure from the masses of course. Is he right wing?

I didn't say "vote democratic", did I??? I said VOTE. And my next sentence was an opinion.

Yes that is true but America wasn't all that open minded either. Gay marriage has only recently become legal in many states. California even had that whole prop 8 vote. He might have become more open minded or simply said things to appeal to more voters. All president candidates say things that appeal to voters so that they get elected into office. The fact is, a lot of people are more open to equality now than a few years ago. This is evident in the number of states that allow gay marriage.

I wonder how tolerant the Chinese are to gays?

Homosexuality was removed from the list of official mental illnesses in 2001.

But with that said, with all the money involved I bet they don't really give a damn.

Gay rights are under assault every day in Congress through efforts to repeal or "Jim Crow" these equal protections. The same with voting rights for minorities.

“I don’t consider myself an activist, but I realize how much I’ve benefited from the sacrifice of others,” Cook wrote in the essay. “So if hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it’s worth the trade-off with my own privacy.”

I already liked and admired him, and now I like and admire him even more. He's a good man.

Wow there's a lot of nasty comments in this thread.

Not a single one of you (unless you're gay) know how hard it is to come out, especially if you grew up in an insanely bigoted part of the country. Coming out can be greeted with acceptance, but often its met with crying, anger, rejection and sadly even violence.

It's sad that coming out even has to happen.

Well, Tim exercised his right to proclaim his embrace and support of the homosexual lifestyle.

I'll exercise my right to say that I find homosexuality immoral and gross.

God Bless America

Good for him.
Its 2014 though. You'd think we were past having to fight for equality.
Yikes, no. Gays are not equals. A man is not interchangeable with a woman.

This is not one of his finer moments. "Don't ask don't tell". Nobody wants to hear about your bizarre bedroom behavior. As CEO of a business, he should know better than to share such things publicly.
