No you don't need to sign up for a new plan with AT&T but you must have a current plan and the associated login info in order to order it
Yes, unless you fill out the form authorizing them to leave it without a signature. But I think they might have to attempt delivery once first.
From what I remember last year, once your phone gets marked as shipped on Apple's website there is a form on there to leave the signature and you just need to tape this to the door. If you don't have this on your door and you aren't home, they'll try delivery again (likely the following Monday) but this time it doesn't need a signature. I did this for the Apple Watch but haven't done it for the iPhone for the past couple years as I just picked it up from the UPS CC.

Same here. Ordered at 12:02 and still can't find any info on UPS by reference or on UPS My Choice. I even checked FedEx even though all Apple shipments coming to my location come by UPS. I want to do this because I know nobody will be home when they try to deliver. I don't live where it ships to (still on my parents phone plan and it only ships to the billing address AT&T has) so I'm just hoping I get it soon enough that I can stop it at the customer center
You can buy it outright, you still have to enter carrier info and then then select to pay in full.
I'm currently on the at&t grandfather plan. I just bought the phone outright. You should be able to do the same on launch day. I got my 6s+ on launch day and did the same thing. Haven't been on a contract in awhile

This is want I’m waiting on as well. I have a few errands that will put me out of the house so I’m not sure if I can leave a note saying to just leave it and don’t require a signature
Yeah they do. I'd suggest having your phone left at a UPS Center so you can pick it up when they open instead of sitting around waiting all day for it to arrive.
Was able to track using my phone number, shows label has been created, and is in Mount Juliet, TN with delivery 9/22, guess this year mine didn't start off in China, wondering how soon I can set it for pickup at the local hub (it will let me know, but like to usually wait until it's been "picked up"
UPS for mine. The past 3 years or so when I've ordered it's always come UPS (once when I ordered from Verizon it came FedEx however), and always started off in China (the UPS ones).
Interesting. All of my Apple orders always came in Fedex for me. Never in UPS.
It differs by state. We learned this a couple of years ago.
Anyone have any luck tracking phones ordered through AT&T’s site by reference? I have 3 phones (2x iPhone 8 Plus and 1x iPhone 8), all updated to “Preparing to Ship” yesterday, and my delivery date has stayed unchanged at the 22nd, but no dice searching by phone # or order # on FedEx or UPS, and nothing showing on UPS MyChoice yet either.
I just did exactly that. Earlier I tried to change delivery to a UPS store, but it said it wouldn't be delivered there until Monday so I left it alone in hopes that it might be delivered while I'm at home. I just went back and changed delivery to the local UPS customer center and it said it would be available for pickup on Friday. It sucks that most packages come to me through UPS because they usually deliver to my house at the exact wrong time of day. When I'm on first shift I usually get home about a half an hour too late. When I'm on second shift I have to leave for work usually about an hour before they get there. Most packages don't require a signature though and it isn't a problem.
TBH I don't think it differs by State. Last year my next door neighbored ordered the 7 and was shipped via UPS. I ordered one as well and got it on Fedex. Must be the address or something.

Ordered through Apple Store app; paid for outright. I received the purchase confirmation email on Friday Sept. 15 at 6:14am CST (central 'Merica). Status updated to "preparing for shipment" sometime mid-Saturday. No changes since then.
Nothing shows up on tracking for FedEx/UPS. I am not really surprised. Seeing as is says Next Day Shipping, and there has been no further changes; I will likely not see any thing until late Wednesday at the earliest.
In the meantime, iPad and iPhone 7+ are updated to iOS 11 finally. YAY! At least I will have that to play with. It is going to be a long two days. /twitch..twitch
The real irony kicks in with my case (and other items) I ordered from Amazon same day. The delivery is also estimated for Friday and its status is stuck at preparing for shipment
Oh well....back to the Switch for this bear
