It certainly looks like this is the case. They have been doing exactly that since launch day where they replenish stock for in-store pick-ups and walk-ins whilst there are millions of pre-orders still pending. Call it unfair, but it makes business sense. Why would Apple prioritize someone who has pre-ordered already with a non-customer they can entice by having stock available for him/her to purchase today! I don't like it, but I understand the economics behind it. In fact I always thought it was bad business for Apple not to have stock readily available in stores for customers to be able to purchase on the spot. As a businessman myself, you never ever want to have a customer turned away just because you never had what he wanted to purchase in-stock - never!
Got my iPhone X yesterday afternoon. I coughed up 8 bucks to get a 2 hour delivery window because I've been so busy getting ready for Thanksgiving. UPS doesn't charge the money unless they meet the promised time.
I went through setup with AppleCare on the phone to make sure I didn't munge any settings. Total time less than an hour. All my contacts, etc were back in minutes. All my photos were back in under an hour. All my apps were back a few hours later. I like unlocking by looking at the phone. I returned my iPhone 7 trade-in via fedex this morning and the Apple Store status page already shows it in transit back to them.
I picked up a Samsung wireless charger today and used it to go from 70 pct to about 78 pct charge in about half an hour. Not bad for not having to plug in a cable. I don't mind using the cable for fast charging when necessary if I can simply put my phone down on a flat wireless charging base and have it charge. I'm planning on getting one of those for my nightstand so I can easily have it charge while I'm sleeping without fishing for a wire every time I want to get it charging again.

Just checked mine and the delivery from November 27th just went I unavalaiable. What kind of crap is that!
Still. In. China. Whatever the reason, it’s not right. You can’t expect someone to pay over $1,000 for something and then make them wait for no apparent reason. That’s bad business. I could understand if there were production problems and the phone wasn’t ready yet, but it is ready and just sitting around.
Hey there, I ordered on 10/30, got a shipping notification on 11/16, and I'm also still stuck in China with an estimated delivery date of 11/24. I have faith that it'll come on the 24th based on what this forum has said so far.
I hope you’re right! It sounds like our phones might be together. I ordered on 10/29 and got a shipping notification early 11/20. At first UPS said 11/24 delivery, now it says information unavailable. It seems very unlikely to get here Friday if it hasn’t left China by now. Others are saying it was in China for days, and then Korea for another couple days. It would be interesting to see which one of us gets their phones first... since I ordered a day earlier, but yours shipped first.
256GB Silver, Ordered 10/27 at 11AM EST. Received a shipping estimate of Dec 11-18. Later changed to Dec 1-8. Last Tuesday status changed to "Preparing to Ship" then received a tracking number a few hours later via email. Phone was stuck in China for 3 days clearing customs, but probably because the weekend interrupted. UPS quoted an original delivery date of November 22nd, then changed to the 24th. I received the phone today on the 21st. It's pretty clear that UPS hauled @$$ from Zhengzhou to Anchorage to Louisville. Only 24 hours passed in that time frame. I have to say i'm pretty impressed, and will order through Apple again in the future.
I ordered mine on 10/27. Finally got a shipping notification on 11/17. My shipment hasn't left ZhengZhou yet. Originally it had a scheduled delivery date of 11/24. Yesterday that changed to unavailable. I still kind of think it might actually arrive on the 24th, if it leaves China tonight or tomorrow. Thanksgiving may push it back another day though. I guess we will see.
What I really don't understand is how people that ordered their phone days after me have already received it. It makes no sense.
Talked to UPS today. Rep states Apple ships in large batches. She could see Lexington KY as next stop which in preparations for customs. She went on to explain because of the way Apple ships it should still arrive on time. Also since it is shipped in batches that it may not scan while in route because it may not stop until it reaches sorting in KY. Apple Care has already assigned my serial number and informed me via email that as soon as I activate it the system will update and Apple Care plan with take effect on that date. We will see if it happens. Sort of hope it arrives early like others have but won’t hold my breath.
So your tracking history shows still in china but the UPS rep says that is already on KY??
Rep said it had a ship status link to KY as a pre arrival there for customs. She did reassure me it would be delivered on the 24th regardless of what tracking site said.
Ive read the same thing all over, but still mine is stuck on CN as last tracking on the 11/18. Orig date 11/24 now says unavailable. Hope to be on the same boat as you. Keep us updated good luck!
I also live in Canada where Thanksgiving might not affect us, as it's not a holiday this week/end for us. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out for sure!
I'm honestly expecting the 256GB Silver iPhone X I ordered on November 18th to ship within the next week. They gave me a Dec 12-19th delivery date and I've noticed many in this thread with a similar date already having had them shipped (though they ordered earlier originally).
Best Buy and Target stores received a ton of devices nationwide over the past hour, so it doesn't seem like stock is as constrained as it seems. Though Apple does reserve a notable percentage of stock for retail especially with the coming holiday weekend.

I also ordered my iPhone X 256 GB Silver on 11/9, got the delivery date of 12/11 to 12-18, than pushed up to 12/08-12/15 and surprisingly when I edited my Post Code by putting the same Post Code again, delivery estimated were improved by 1 day (12/07 to 12/14), lol
today my status has been changed to "Preparing to ship", CC got charged by full total order amount but the delivery estimates are showing the same.
Those of you guys who got your ship dates changed to an earlier one, did it reflect on apple.com, or did apple have to notify you through email?

I ordered SG x 256 on 11/27 @ 12:30 am, and got an 11/17 - 11/24 delivery window.
Phone shipped on the 14 th, but sat in China for 8 days, like yours. It finally left China a few hours ago and was scanned into Korea. I expect it will sit there for a few more days!
Apple says delivery by 11/24, UPS My Choice says delivery by end of today—-not happening, I’m sure!
Even if it arrives on Friday, it will have taken 10 days from time it originally shipped.
I think Apple was supplying retailers first and putting us poor sobs to the end of the line.

Once close out is done it is in UPS’ hands. So UPS is failing to meet shipping standards they claim they can make. Apple shows delivery for me still as December 1-8th. UPS had my delivery as the the 24th but that has changed to unavailable, another way to say whenever we feel like it LOL. I have heard some phones were delivered and shipping status didn’t change until after it was delivered
Depends on if you look at the web page or the app. The website shows for me a delivery of 11/24 and the app still shows my delivery of 12/1-12/8
